BOOK THREE IN THE SEBASTIAN FOXLEY MEDIEVAL MYSTERY SERIES
Interview with the Author
What makes the Sebastian Foxley Medieval Mystery Series special?
In my Sebastian Foxley Medieval Mystery Series, I’ve used my personal research of the medieval period to recreate the dark and dangerous London of the 15th century. These historical touches bring authenticity to my historical thrillers and mysteries, recreating the everyday life that my protagonist Sebastian Foxley would have experienced.
What order should the books be read in?
Each book is a stand-alone story, but in my first medieval mystery, The Colour of Poison, we are introduced to all of the main characters, when Sebastian is in the greatest need of help and support. The second in my mystery series, The Colour of Gold, is a short story which acts as a bridge between The Colour of Poison and the next full-length book in the series, The Colour of Cold Blood.
Why should readers give your medieval mysteries a try?
I have established a considerable reputation as a historian and writer of several non-fiction works, which look at both ordinary lives in medieval London, as well as the medicine of the period. With my professional scientific background and a detailed knowledge of art, I have been able to create thrilling situations populated with believable characters who can use the science and knowledge of the period to solve their mysteries. As you'll soon find out, you will be taken to a world from the past in my Sebastian Foxley Medieval Murder Mystery Series.
I hope you'll give the series a try!

About the author

My new novel "The Colour of Sin" is the twelfth in the Seb Foxley series of medieval thrillers. Readers have purchased over 40,000 copies of the series and read over 13.5 million pages via download.
My latest book from Pen & Sword is the next in my series of light hearted 'How to Survive' books - this one looks at how to prepare for a trip to Tudor England and 'how to keep your head when all around are losing theirs.' And How to Survive in Anglo-Saxon England is due out in the autumn of 2024.
My novels have brought these positive endorsements:
Tracy Borman, historian and broadcaster said “An atmospheric and compelling thriller that takes the reader to the dark heart of medieval London.”
Matthew Lewis historian, podcaster and author said “Toni Mount continues to delight with the superbly crafted Seb Foxley mysteries. Impeccable research and sculpted characters combine with an engaging narrative to create another irresistible story.
The first Foxley 'Collector's Edition' is a luxury hardback combining the first two stories from the Sebastian Foxley series and contains bonus information including maps and character studies.
"How to Survive in Medieval England" and "Everyday Life in Medieval London" have both become No1 Best sellers in five seperate Amazon categories.
My next projects include book 13 in the Foxley series 'The Colour of Darkness' and book four for Pen & Sword 'How to Survive in Ration-Book England'
I study, write and teach British history. My non-fiction books look at the ordinary lives of medieval people, leading me to write my successful series of murder mysteries. They are set in the stinking streets of medieval London and feature the talented yet humble artist, Sebastian Foxley. My Victorian melodrama is "The Death Collector".
My fascinating non-fiction book "A Year in the Life of Medieval England" looks at real events that occurred on everyday of a medieval year and my first biography is about the life and times of Isaac Newton.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI liked this one better than the first one, The Colour of Poison, which I liked sufficient, to go on to read the short story and then buy the Colour of Cold Blood. The story is good and the book gives, I trust (due to the background of the writer), a good account of what life in medieval times was like. Brutal, with small bits of kindness. I felt myself transported to that time. I like the characters and how they interact. And I can't wait to see what becomes of Jack, because writing and reading are clearly not his thing. I also wonder about the other characters and their next adventure and if relationships will improve. But the ending? But it was rather abrupt. I don't want to spoil anything for other readers, but I went to check reviews to see if the ending is correct or if I'm missing a chapter. And since there are no other reviews, I asked Toni Mount, the writer, on Facebook. And yes, the ending is rather abrupt. But there are at least 3 more books in this series to come, so don't despair. It also didn’t bother me much, because I figured there was going to be a next book. Is the book complete? Can it be read as a standalone? I guess, you could because the murders are solved. But it’s more fun to read them in order. The thing with a lot of series these days is, that the main issue is solved, but life goes on, and so it is with the lives of the characters. And it’s not realistic to expect that all life issues are solved within one book that is part of a series. I’m really looking forward to the next installment. In the meantime, I might read some of the non-fiction books by Toni Mount, because the middle ages have always fascinated me.

By Toni Mount
Reviewed May 1, 2022
The Colour of Cold Blood is the third book in the Sebastian Foxley Medieval Mystery series, and is every bit as good as the previous entries.
Gone is the warm glow of the previous short story that told of Seb and Emily’s wedding. Instead, things are quite tense at the Foxley house. Though Jude is the older brother, it’s Seb’s house and Seb who is head of the household because it is the younger brother who is the married man, and this doesn’t always sit well with Jude. Em is tired of dealing with Jude, and even more tired of what she sees as her husband deferring to his brother rather than ever standing up for his wife.
Never the easiest person to live with, Jude is still dealing from the effects of nearly being wrongly executed, events covered in the first book. More than once he has angry words members of the household, particularly with Emily, and Seb finds himself torn between his brother and his wife, both of whom he loves. Following a nasty altercation that includes pouring a bowl of food on his sister-in-law, Jude leaves the house...and doesn’t show up for several days. Is he drinking his sorrows away, or has something worse happened?
Emily isn’t happy with Jude’s rudeness toward her, nor is she happy with what she sees as Seb’s ignoring her. Is there trouble brewing in marital paradise?
Gabriel, the Foxley’s well-liked journeyman, is involved in something fishy, and gets into an argument with a man selling religious relics. Could Gabe be involved with the Lollard heresy?
Apprentices Tom and Jack, young lads in their early teens, are on an errand for Seb when they stumble upon the corpse of a young woman. Upset, they leave the scene in fear rather than call out the hue and cry. Under-sheriff Nox isn’t happy with this, and let’s Seb know his is displeased.
Captain Marchmaine, a friend of Seb’s, disappears shortly after his ship returns from a trading mission to Italy, and turns up dead in the river. An accident? No, it’s another murder! Do we have a medieval serial killer on the loose?
With all this going on, can things get any worse for Seb? But of course, as Gabe is arrested as a heretic and condemned to death by being burned at the stake!
The Colour of Cold Blood is a fun, fast paced mystery filled with twists and turns, and makes me eager to dive into the next installment. My only complaint? After a while, Emily's nagging and complaining started wearing thin. I hope her personality improves over the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI've read this and Tony Mount's other two books in the series and I've enjoyed them all equally. In her first book she dealt with murder by poison, an old and honorable plot line. In this offering she shows a more cruel and bloodthirsty side of medieval murder. The rendering is well worth the read. Of course, I like medieval mysteries, so I should warn you that you are dealing with a specific time period and if that is to your liking, you will come away satisfied. I have always been fascinated with the medieval period because of the raw nature of humanity at the time and the well established class lines which were rarely breached. Now we still have the class lines but are much more phony about the strictures of our time, which frequently adds the air of phoniness to modern murder mysteries. Toni Mount does an excellent job of removing all phoniness from the medieval era.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI am thoroughly enjoying the Sebastian Foxley books. English history is my first love and these books are packed with historical tidbits and descriptions. The stories need to be read in order as they follow on each other. The characters are well developed and the stories have interesting and exciting twists.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have now read all three of the books and can hardly wait to read more. Toni Mount's style of writhing is very fluid. Her characters are definitely multi faceted.. They are so vividly described that I can see them in my mind as I read. I read all three books in succession and that was wonderful! .
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book was a big disappointment after reading book one. Em, as a new wife, seemed suddenly turned into a shrew! She was always angry, bitter and physically assaults her husband. What happened to the sweet caring girl who loved a handicapped man?
Details of daily life, such as foods prepared and eaten were still interesting. But to me, the story lacked cohesion, the characters lacked development.
I will try Book 4 as I’ve already purchased it, but I hope it’s better than Book Two & Three.

2.0 out of 5 stars I was really looking forward to this book. Unfortunately it did nothing for me at all. I enjoyed the previous books in this series immensely. The characters were disjointed and it seemed like the author decide another book in this series had to be written so it was hastily done. Truly seemed a rush job. I hated the ending, mainly because it wasn't an ending . all in all a great disappointment
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI certainly hope any more books in this series come up to a much higher standard than this one did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great series!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGreat story wonderful characters! If you enjoy Paul Doherty and CJ Sansom then you will enjoy this series of books. Like Paul Doherty, Toni has a deep understanding of history and the place of the commoner's in society of the time. She constructs her charaters well and places then in the sphere of great and the not so good of of British history. The story developmen excellent.

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA wonderful book, full of excitement and well described scenes of Mediaeval London, with believable, engaging characters and a thrilling story line, with two well researched themes running throughout. Ms Mount writes in a way to make everything seem to come alive and often I felt that I was a part of the enthralling story. I love this series! A pleasure to read.

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love reading about the Foxley brothers. Such a great description of medieval times that I feel I am there with them. I am so looking forward to the next book especially after being left with a cliff hanger ending.
