The Colour of Lies: A Sebastian Foxley Medieval Murder Mystery (Sebastian Foxley Medieval Mystery Book 7) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 550 ratings

It is late summer and London is all a-bustle for St Bartholomew’s Fayre, with merchants arriving from faraway lands. When an old friend returns with fabulous items for sale, it can only mean one thing: trouble. As thievery, revenge and murder stalk the fayre, Sebastian Foxley – artist and sometime-sleuth – has mysteries to solve. In uncovering the answers, he becomes enmeshed in a web of lies and falsehoods. His greatest dilemma means having to choose between upholding honour and justice or saving those dearest to him. How can a truly honest citizen of London practise deceit and yet live with his conscience?

The seventh Sebastian Foxley medieval murder mystery from bestselling author Toni Mount takes us deep into a dark world once again.

Author Interview

We asked the author Toni Mount to tell us about her thrilling new novel, The Colour of Lies – this is what she told us:

My latest book in the Sebastian Foxley medieval murder mystery series sees our hero return to the bustling city of London from his quiet home village in rural Norfolk. The city is busy and full of excitement for the annual St Bartholomew’s Fayre. This was London’s great annual international market, with merchants coming from far and wide. Foreign traders and incomers arrive from the known world, to sell their exotic wares – from ribbons in rainbow hues, magical unicorn horns, aromatic African spices and intriguing Bohemian glass.

Of course, for Seb, nothing is ever so simple as an enjoyable day out, the return of his old friend Gabriel complicates matters; will his wife reveal her secret passion? Jack runs away and Emily and her fellow silkwomen display their beautiful handicrafts.

Then a dead body is found and some unique and valuable merchandise has been stolen.

While Seb is still trying to unravel these felonies, a woman is discovered murdered in the street and, most troubling of all, Seb’s beloved Emily is a suspect. Can our artist and amateur sleuth solve this horrendous crime, save his wife and work out who is telling the blackest of lies...

My new novel "The Colour of Sin" is the twelfth in the Seb Foxley series of medieval thrillers. Readers have purchased over 40,000 copies of the series and read over 13.5 million pages via download.

My latest book from Pen & Sword is the next in my series of light hearted 'How to Survive' books - this one looks at how to prepare for a trip to Tudor England and 'how to keep your head when all around are losing theirs.' And How to Survive in Anglo-Saxon England is due out in the autumn of 2024.

My novels have brought these positive endorsements:

Tracy Borman, historian and broadcaster said “An atmospheric and compelling thriller that takes the reader to the dark heart of medieval London.”

Matthew Lewis historian, podcaster and author said “Toni Mount continues to delight with the superbly crafted Seb Foxley mysteries. Impeccable research and sculpted characters combine with an engaging narrative to create another irresistible story.

The first Foxley 'Collector's Edition' is a luxury hardback combining the first two stories from the Sebastian Foxley series and contains bonus information including maps and character studies.

"How to Survive in Medieval England" and "Everyday Life in Medieval London" have both become No1 Best sellers in five seperate Amazon categories.

My next projects include book 13 in the Foxley series 'The Colour of Darkness' and book four for Pen & Sword 'How to Survive in Ration-Book England'

I study, write and teach British history. My non-fiction books look at the ordinary lives of medieval people, leading me to write my successful series of murder mysteries. They are set in the stinking streets of medieval London and feature the talented yet humble artist, Sebastian Foxley. My Victorian melodrama is "The Death Collector".

My fascinating non-fiction book "A Year in the Life of Medieval England" looks at real events that occurred on everyday of a medieval year and my first biography is about the life and times of Isaac Newton.

Another excellent addition to the Sebastian Foxley Medieval Mysteries series!

Toni Mount's attention to historical detail is impressive as she employs it so deftly in this plot of murder and deception. I add the deception being perpetrated against Sebastian personally as his waspish wife Em proves her to be unworthy of this gentle, loving, intelligent man. It's a shame he doesn't see the reality of the situation in his own household as he is thrust into another role as assistant to the sheriff.

Mount's ability to bring numerous characters to life in 15th Century London is brilliant and such great reading. I cannot wait until the next installment in this fantastic series. This is a book, and series, I highly recommend to readers of historical fiction and detective series.

I have been enjoying this series but this one seemed a little weak. I got tired of Seb, the main character, having no back bone. His personal life seems to be deteriorating rapidly while he runs around trying to determine who killed a local woman. I enjoyed Adam, his half brother?, and Rose. His two helpers are more trouble than they are worth. But, I look forward to the next book. Maybe Seb will find some backbone!

Could not wait to read the 7th Sebastian Foxley book!!!! It is very refreshing to read a book about the 15th century in 15th century English. It is so easy to immerse yourself into the story. Can't wait to read the next book

This series is the first I have read that takes place in the 15th century and I find it fascinating. The vocabulary and speech patterns are fairly easy to deduce and make for interesting reading. I hope the next will be with us shortly.

I like this series although I'm not sure why. Aside from Rose and Adam, all of the characters are completely unlikeable. Seb has no spine, Emily is a wicked witch, the boys are utterly selfish. The author wanted the reader to dislike Em, but why not just kill her off? Too many words are being wasted describing all the reasons that her character is unlikeable. I do like her portrayal of the Duke of Gloucester.

Toni Mount once again takes us into the world of Medieval life and especially the world of Seb Foxley! WILL you be kept on tender hooks as I was? I sure hope so!
  • Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2019
I agree with most of the other reviewers - Seb has turned into someone I'm not interested in knowing. While I don't like Emily the shrew, I can sort of understand how she's come to her current state being married to such a spineless ninny. Adam, Rose and Kate are the interesting characters, especially Adam. Adam's firmness with Jack and Tom is a "finally!" moment. All told, the only reason I finished the book was because I was hoping Emily would find herself pregnant and ultimately giving birth to a baby with one brown eye and one blue eye. How would her milquetoast husband rationalize that one?

I liked the medieval backround and the murder mysteries as well as some of the characters. The Seb was soft and likeable, but now he his weak and helpless. and lets himself be used. Jude is a drunkard. Emily is a shrew and unfaithful,I can't believe Seb isn't suspcious. Tom and Jack are useless and I can sympathize with Emily here. Adam ,Rose and Kate are the only characters I still like. This story left us hanging on so many different levels.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best one yet!

As always, you find yourself immersed in medieval London, everything described so vividly you can even smell the terrible stench, it is obvious thatr Toni Mount knows and researches her subject very well. I found the plot even more captivating than in the other instalments of the series, there being two different murders one of which involving Seb's family very very closely, and there are quite a few moments where the reader must hold his or her breath fearing the outcome of a situation. The Foxley household has undergone and is undergoing a few changes, old members leaving and new members coming, others simply growing. As a great dog lover and having dogs myself, of course I have a soft spot for the heroic Gawain, but I also like Adam very much. (I hope this is not to be considered a spoiler, but I really MUST say one thing: what has become of the sweet Emily from The Colour of Poison? Nowadays she is a hard-hearted woman not deserving of Seb's love and complete devotion, and maybe one night in Newsgate would have served her well)
Now I will just have to be patient and wait for the next Sebastian Foxley adventure, the preview at the end of The Colour of Lies promises another fascinating story.

1.0 out of 5 stars Story interesting but main protagonist getting very irritating
Reviewed in India on December 16, 2019
This series is gradually losing me , not because of the mysteries but because of the protagonist’s lack of spine.
It is one thing to be good but what harm is there in having a little self respect!
Emily’s character is just not tolerable any more and that coupled with the fact that mystery wise, there are better written plots out there, I do not see any reason why I should waste further time on this series.
My advise to would be readers will be that try this series only if you wish to read a novel about human frailities with a dash of sleuthing and not the vice versa.

I was fortunate to receive a pre release copy of "The Colour of Lies" and it did not disappoint me. Sebiastian Foxley along with his family returns from his childhood home in rural Norfolk to a London bustling with activity in preparation for the annual St Bartholomew Fayre. However all is not well at home and Seb has his work cut out in order to.put things right. Without spoiling it for other readers he soon becomes enmeshed in a web of lies which involves his wife and has to choose between honour and justice. Infact I have grown to dislike Emily for her attitude and selfish actions. Is this the same woman from previous books?
I found that again Toni got me so involved with the story that I felt that I would be walking down those narrow streets and I could actually smell the stinking alley ways.
I have read all her novels and would rank her at the top of my favourite authors.
