The Plan
By the time three thirty rolls around, I haven’t had a customer in over an hour, so I decide to run upstairs and make a cup of tea. Just as I’m about to turn on the television while I wait for the water to boil, the bell over the shop door rings. Note to business owners, the ticket to more foot traffic is leaving the store in pursuit of tea. I might need to write a book. I could call it “If You Make Tea, They Will Come.
”I turn off the pot and run downstairs to see who my customer is. When I hit the bottom step, I have a clear view of a person standing next to my brightly painted apothecary drawer full of carnelian beads. I’m either in the throes of a major hallucination or dreams really do come true. Huck Wiley, or someone who looks enough like him to be his identical twin, is standing under one of the three beaded chandeliers hanging from the ceiling above my workstation. He’s looking at the necklace I was just working on.
He’s wearing jeans so faded and torn they look like they’re ready for the rag bin, yet I’m willing to bet he spent more on them than most people spend on ten pairs. The rock god is sporting a vintage U2 t-shirt and a black leather jacket. I can’t see what his shoes look like because there’s a display case blocking my view, but I’d put money on biker boots.
The floorboards creak as I step forward. My disbelieving eyes focus like a thirsty wanderer lost in the desert having just spotted a distant source of water. Whoever he is, he turns and looks right at me. His smile is so bright I may have gasped out loud in response. Seven more steps land me directly in front of him.“
Can I help you?” My tone is prim, reminiscent of a school librarian daring a student to try to check out a book before paying his overdue fine.
“Hey there,” he croons in that voice, the one I know so well from having spent hours listening to his music. My mouth hangs open like I’m a drooling idiot, but I can’t seem to close it. “I heard you gave beading classes and I was wondering if you have a special session for kids.”
I temporarily forget that he and I speak the same language. Did he just ask me about beading classes? I must be experiencing a particularly vivid fantasy. Rock star Huck Wiley can’t possibly be a closet beader, can he? Wait, he said “for kids” … Maybe I fell asleep when I went upstairs to make tea and this dream is making up for last night’s ball and chain fiasco. If so, it’s a good one.
The vision in front of me releases an easy laugh, a real laugh. Huck Wiley is probably used to odd reactions from strange women, and let me say, I’m doing my darndest to behave strangely.

About the author

USA Today Bestselling author Whitney Dineen is a rock star in her own head. While delusional about her singing abilities, there’s been a plethora of validation that she’s a fairly decent author (AMAZING!!!). After winning many writing awards and selling nearly a kabillion books (math may not be her forte, either), she’s decided to let the voices in her head say whatever they want (sorry, Mom). She also won a fourth-place ribbon in a fifth-grade swim meet in backstroke. So, there’s that.
Whitney loves to play with her kids (a.k.a. dazzle them with her amazing flossing abilities), bake stuff, eat stuff, and write books for people who "get" her. She thinks french fries are the perfect food and Mrs. Roper is her spirit animal.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI noticed that the book has 61 chapters as I was starting & thought "Dang, this is a long story. I hope it won't be a slog." It was so NOT a slog!
Amelia's dealing with untreated anxiety, & as someone who has had to learn how to deal with it (though not at a debilitating level), I can tell you that the worst thing you can do is cater to it. So she's kind of a mess, as she's been living her life to appease the anxiety monster.
It wasn't immediate but the story didn't take long to fully engage me - once Huck entered the story, the story takes off, & I was hooked till the end.
Huck pushes Amelia out of her comfort zone, but it works because she has some powerful motivators, not the least of which is that she wants to be with him, & of course, the delightful Maggie.
Maggie struggles with anxiety, too, and it draws them all together. I loved how it wasn't just Amelia helping Maggie, but that they were helping each other.
There were a few things that were coincidental or unlikely, but I was so immersed in the story that I didn't care.
Dineen's humor is frequently amusing, occasionally even laugh out loud funny, but - fair warning - it does sometimes go a bit too far. That did put me off a time or two, but then the story would pull me right back in.
*Clean romance level: slow burn, passionate kisses, nothing graphic, but lots of innuendo, & secular attitudes about sex outside of marriage, protagonists are only waiting for some things to be resolved not a wedding
*Religion: several dozen uses of the Lord's Name in vain, sadly & unnecessarily, though at least not as curses
*Language: about a handful of uses of d--- & h---
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI suffer from severe anxiety and have since I was a child. I disagree with some people saying she didn’t research, that’s BS. She did and I know this because every author that writes about anxiety in a romcom tends to make it too fluffy because they fear the line between dark and light blurring. They always use the stove and door example (which HES is a thing with anxiety and also ocd but it’s the most basic thing aside from numbers. Again a thing but anyone knows this) Meanwhile Whitney went in depth with the details that a lot of people don’t know about, and yes they seem irrational but that’s what anxiety disorders are. We aren’t anxious over just normal things that are rational, or it wouldn’t be a disorder. It’s all irrational but our brain doesn’t stop anyway with our fight or flight reaction and survival instincts on overdrive. Usually due to trauma.
So when a few people commented that the main character was “crazy” that pissed me off. Yes it feels that way to ignorant people. But people who actually attempt to learn about others and the reasons behind their psyche would know it’s completely degrading and hurtful to call people with anxiety crazy. It makes the rest of us feel put down. If you think it’s so exhausting to read, how do you think we feel not being able to just close a book and escape it? Please, if you aren’t willing to be open to different kinds of people, keep your ignorant and biased comments to yourself.
I do however agree that the a flaw is in her family supposedly not knowing. I get it was meant to show the strong immediate intimacy between them. But it just looked like her parents didn’t care or pay attention especially after a traumatic event or try to get a child help when they are supposedly super involved and loving. Also she was a bit too bitchy. I’m actually super suneshiney and nice. My anxiety doesn’t make me lash out at people being kind to me. I didn’t love her treatment of him or how she was so quick to go from lifelong idol and crush to mean and uncaring, it was off putting.
But overall I loved the representation of anxiety and I loved the connecting of the daughter to the main female character. It was a great concept and the writing overal was wonderful and I will definitely continue to read her books. Between this and the move novel where Whitney had done a great job creating a huge dominos web of connections brilliantly (although the ending was too fast and came out of nowhere) I won’t reveal details but these books have been refreshing and unique and I give it 4 stars !!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved this book. The narrator of this book is a women who suffers from anxiety, so much so that she has restricted herself to a modest life she considers manageable. So when a well known rock musician finds his way to her place of business she expects his presence in her small town to be a blip on his radar. Finding they have an unexpected affinity is way outside her comfort zone. Even more unexpected is her affinity for his small daughter with whom she has much in common.
Whitney Dineen is a funny lady, but I have enjoyed some of her books much more than others. The second and third of this series I have found very enjoyable. While maintaining her trademark wit, the characters seem a little bit more developed than in some of her earlier books, and in this series we get to view a whole community through the viewpoint of a variety of people. This is a book where you root for people to transcend the
barriers standing between themselves and their best lives.
I loved this and I am looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAfter a childhood incident, Amelia developes a fear of lots of things, but since no one ever talks about the family trip to Atlanta, she's not even sure about what caused her insecurity and worry. When her favorite country music singer shows up in her small bead shop in Missouri, Amelia can barely get a word out. He's been in her dreams for years and his music is always a go to for her.
Her family and friends thought her last boyfriend would be "the one" until he announced his plan to move to St. Louis, a large city Amelia could never exist in. No, her small town home is where she needs to be, and there she'll stay.
Excellent story and characters with a great plot. The author's understanding of empathy is beautiful to read!
