An Environment That Sustains Life, Hope, Honor and Destiny!

In this powerful, revelation-packed book, Danny Silk describes the significant paradigm shift in church life, government, and relationships that has created and sustained the revival culture at Bethel Church in Redding, California.Through many relevant and true-life stories, the church is revealed as a place of freedom, respect, empowerment, and healthy discipline (not punishment). Culture of Honor challenges the status quo of church leadership structure and presents a refreshing view of the five-fold ministry.Jesus acknowledged this important principle in Matthew 20:25-26:But Jesus called them to Himself and said, 'You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. If those with power learn how to empower those around them, then surely it will come to pass that, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. You can apply-today-the truths revealed in this practical yet supernaturally charged set of principles to relationships in your family, workplace, community, ministry, church-wherever you deal with others.

The church is in need of a radical reformation. I believe that this book is a part of God’s prescription to address this need. As we succeed, we’ll be positioned to help bring the cities of our world into

transformation. And it’s a transformation through honor-that which communicates the grace of God so beautifully.

Pastor Danny Silk has written a wonderful book sharing one of the core values of Bethel Church in Redding, California, that has been foundational to the revival that Bethel has been experiencing for a number of years. I believe the “culture of honor,” as Danny presents it, can bring and sustain revival and reformation to anyone who lives out this biblical principle. I highly recommend this book.

Review

God is in the process of restoring Kingdom mentality to the church, and those who get it willmove under the blessed order of God s government. This book is both an indication of this process and a clarification of the strategic issue of honor as it relates to how Christians work together in church. Chapter 2, entitled The Funnel From Heaven, is an absolute must-read for those who not only are wondering why the fivefold ministry is not working as we had hoped, but for all who have not seriously considered this vital approach to church life. Danny s contribution toward the Kingdom Church will help us all navigate this adventure of Kingdom life together. ---Jack Taylor, President, Dimensions Ministries

Simple to understand. Easy to read. Engaging. Also, what an incredible call to challenge the status quo that has been the church mindset. There is no “slippery grace”. Some years ago my life was changed when I heard a series called Rediscovering the Kingdom by Dr. Myles Munroe. I devoured it and I was ruined and could never go back to the teaching I had been under for the first 25 years of my "Christian life". In seeking other teachers/pastors who taught from a Kingdom mindset..."on earth as it is in Heaven", a friend told me about Bill Johnson, the pastor of Bethel Church in Redding, CA. I listened at iBethel TV online to everything I could hear and read "When Heaven Invades Earth" and "Dreaming with God"...again...my life was greatly impacted and I was changed! I started to listen to some of the other pastors, but I was hesitant...afraid that I would be disappointed and not hear the continuity that I knew I needed to grow me further...I was so hungry to rid myself of the religious junk that I had been taught for 25 years or more. I learned lots of good things and it was all apart of my journey to getting closer in relationship to God, etc, but SO MUCH OF IT was religious crap (sorry)! I decided to listen some to Kris Vallotton and enjoyed him. He is another awesome teacher! I listened to all the great music of Jesus Culture and Brian and Jenn Johnson. It blessed me so and brought me into awesome times of worship! I kept seeing the name of this guy Danny Silk, but I was resistant to add yet another teacher...afraid still that I would hear something not in step with what I was learning that was so life changing. I read about this series Danny has called "Loving Our Kids On Purpose" and I thought, "Yeah,we need one more person to tell us 'spare the rod and spoil the child', etc. What could he have that was SO different!" I read the book, downloaded the MP3 and bought the DVDs before I was done with that amazing series and even though it was helping us SO much with my grandchildren...we all realized that we were changing. It wasn't just about how to raise your kids...it was all about a Culture of Honor! Then when the Culture of Honor book came out...had to have it. Devoured it in 1/2 a day! Downloaded any MP3s I could find on Culture of Honor by Danny and I am SO GLAD to have met up with the Silk family! God is using them so mightily! Things I was taught for years...I am now free from! Hallelujah! I now know that the many of the disappointments and seeming failures in my "Christian life" were caused by not truly understanding that Jesus payment for my sins was complete. I heard it, but I didn't believe it...just like the preachers who were teaching me knew it, but didn't really believe it...because most of them are still enslaved by the law...they are trying to walk out 2 covenants...living in the "new" old testament! You've probably sung for years, "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom!"...but believe me when I say that you will KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS once you have read Culture of Honor by Danny Silk! He is awesome at teaching us to walk in it too! He doesn't just teach it, he walks it! You will never regret buying this book and you may even be like me...I have to keep buying it, because I keep giving it away! (same with Loving Our Kids On Purpose) Do future generations a favor and know God for who He truly is! It's what He sent His Son to die for and He's waiting for you! HAVE A HAPPY AND BLESSED NEW YEAR!

I've read a number of books from Bethel's senior leadership team including quite a few by Bill Johnson, one from Kris, and Danny's other book Loving Our Kids On Purpose. Of all of them, if I had to chose a favorite, CULTURE OF HONOR would be my choice. The reason is simple: this is the most profoundly impacting books I've read in my lifetime of reading Christian books of all varieties. What Danny lays out in its pages is a paradigm shift away from rules and towards relationship, away from life spent trying to control everyone and everything and towards honoring and loving one another as Christ modeled during His time on earth. Examining the scary implications of "Love always trusts," as well as laying out a common sense approach to how we can implement that into our daily lives, CULTURE OF HONOR will seriously mess with some of your preconceived ideas and perceptions about how God intends us to relate to each other.

The concept of Christians being 'unpunishable' is just so offensive in many ways. God's grace can seem offensive through our human eyes and sense of justice. It isn't 'just' that we've been let off the hook, and even more so, called Sons and Daughters because of Christ our Lord. It's easier to understand why much of Christiandom has spent the last several centuries pursuing information and rules instead of relationship when you realize how hardwired many of us are to judge and punish and make more rules so we can judge and punish even more. Culture of Honor is the answer to that human brokenness. It's the Father's original plan with relationship and love being at the very center of our existence. This is a book straight from the Father's heart.

The book is not particularly linear, because like most books from Bethel, it is derived from various teachings that were given over time. That said, Danny's books make this work better than others out of Bethel, perhaps because as Bill Johnson states in the introduction, "Danny has the best language..." for the Culture of Honor paradigm that Bethel is pursuing. Having heard Danny live in Valparaiso a year or so ago, it's pretty clear he lives-and-breathes this stuff and is passionate about seeing others implement honor into their lives, relationships, and churches.

Danny also does a great job of laying out the Five-Fold Ministry model that Bethel teaches. My one complaint with the book is that the chapter that describes the Apostle, Prophet, Pastor, Teacher, and Evangelist spends a fair amount of time discussing the pitfalls of Pastor and Teacher led churches (absent an Apostolic covering) but doesn't spend much time talking about what those roles look like when they are connected in a healthy way to an apostolic leader. I know that Bethel has good teaching on that topic as I've heard it elsewhere; it would have been ideal to have that laid out in this book as well. That said, this is a minor complaint with an otherwise excellent book.

I've found that reading this book has once again pushed me to examine my heart and attitudes and evaluate how I choose to treat people. The discussion in the book about how we use rules and 'taking offense' as reasons to withhold love from people was very convicting. I recognized once again how much a product of my family and culture I am and how I let unhealthy ways of thinking impact my choices (and especially my choices of how to treat others). CULTURE OF HONOR is clear, concise, and convicting--I plan to purchase copies for a few friends. After reading the book, I want more than ever to see my relationships unhindered by old thinking and old rules--I want everyone I know to be pursuing honor and calling me on to 'the higher things.'

One of the best that Bethel has produced. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars recommended reading for all leadership teams
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 11, 2012

My wife and I are involved in church leadership and found this book exceptional, with a much welcomed and timely emphasis on valuing one-another, and unconditional love as the prime motivator for dealing with difficult situations and circumstances - based on Kingdom values where restoration takes a very high place (as it should be!) The book starts from the perspective that we are deeply loved by an almighty Heavenly Father who has delivered us through the death and resurrection of His Son, called and equipped us for a new life through the Holy Spirit. the book makes the valid point that the Christian church often expects its leadership to exercise all the gifts of the Spirit, especially the pastor. So often, the 'pastor' is gifted in areas such as teaching, evangelism, etc, and yet operates outside of their gifting when it comes to exercising pastoral care. Also, church leaders (and laity) often approach the subject of church discipline from a punitive perspective; something that has to be done TO a person, before they can be restored. Culture of Honor exhorts us to perceive and call out the gold in each other and value one another, supporting one another as we take responsibility for our own messes. We have shared this book with a number of our friends, who have themselves bought multiple copies for sharing with their church leadership teams. They testify that it has given them new, fresh insight into dealing with difficult church leadership scenarios. It should be recommended reading for all leadership teams who wish to be led by the Spirit within their fellowships.
