MIXED FEELINGS
I finished book 2 with mixed feelings. On one hand, the author has an incredible writing skill that pulls in the reader--book 1 was phenomenal-- Book 2 pulled me in too, However on the other hand, I did NOT like the main female character. At all. Im now reading book 3 and I hope there is a satisfying ending. The author has great writing skills, and I'm hoping for a great ending too.

The story I recently read was truly riveting and captivating. As I delved deeper into the plot, I found myself completely invested in the characters and their journeys. The way the story explored two different cultures and their clash was not only intriguing but also thought-provoking. The character development was so well-crafted that I could not help but feel a strong connection with them. I was truly invested in their lives and their CULTURAL struggles. The way the author weaved together different elements and created a seamless and engaging plot was truly commendable.

The story was good, but it felt like it was written from the wrong person’s perspective. I really wanted to know what Juaan’s thoughts were, but his perspective was never shown. The stubbornness of the elders was annoying. The descriptions were good, but I felt like the story didn’t really have a climax.

Very good book. Well written and enthralling. Reading about the desperate urge of one person to survive and do the right thing and keep their clan alive but so torn while learning truths to her world has been on another level.

I liked the premise of the story line but it was too drawn out, the constant suffering was overwhelming. Could only read a chapter at a time too intense

What a way to end this part of the story. There is a tense buildup throughout this book, which has been crafted well by the author. The writing brings the story to life, where the reader can almost see, taste, and feel all that is happening. Great story. A good study also on the way beliefs and one’s spirituality shape lives and the world around them.

5.0 out of 5 stars YES! Book 2 now presents a more compelling tale of Nyri's & Juaan's mysterious connections!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 5, 2020
    Format: KindleVerified Purchase
I had read the previous publication of Ancestors which has been revised and republished as this book: Daughter of Ninmah (The Ancestors Saga, A Prehistoric Fantasy Romance Series, Book 2)

Even if you read the original version, I found the new version well worth buying. As The Forbidden introduced several new ideas and some name-changes for the spiritual and practical lifeways of all of the peoples, it helps with the flow from the first to the second books. It also weaves a smoother narrative of their shared but separate histories.

Rebaa only survived a few furies/winters once back home, and so Nyri's mum took Juaan in as a young child. Juaan in turn is now raising Nyri as she has lost her mother, too. They struggle to find their place in the tribe... these are a people who are diminishing in numbers throughout the great forests where they live in almost Weaver like nests built into their massive trees. Nyri knows much about Juaan's heritage, but does not speak of it... but she has knowledge of the outside world-- of other peoples. The Cros and the Thals. Remember Juaan's father, Rebaas' mate Juran? Remember Nen?

Baarias, Rebaa's brother, healed her when she first returned with Juaan. He is their Master Healer and knows that the tribe's future is looking grim. There are not enough of them to support a healthy gene pool. He is training Nyri to be the tribe's next healer. Juaan and Nyriaaana owe their place in the tribe to Sefaan-- their shaman (Kamaali), and keeper of traditions and wise visionary. She predicts the harsh winters will bring the End of Days. At times it appears that she and Baarias are at odds... but, but, but.... in another attack, their forest home is once again invaded by the Woves who are actually Cros, and their home trees burnt... and Juaan is taken away by them! The tribe now must retreat further into the forest and find a new, but poorer home to hide from them. The forest is dying... the winters are getting longer, the summers yielding less vegan food for Nyri’s people.

Now grown up, Kyaati, Nyri's beautiful cousin, draws them into danger at the outset as she is pregnant by her childhood friend and love, Yaanth, who has gone. She and Yaanth were secretly joined by Sefaan instead of the elders’ choice of Dijaar for Kyaati. There is a lot of tension and intrigue.

After another Wove attack... and much to Nyri's shock, she finds Juaan again when he is trapped in an old neglected pit. But just who is Juaan now? Why did she hear in her mind him calling...Nyri, Nyri, Niryaana just as when children together? Why did he come with the Woves, and why do Woves attack them at all? Her people see them as evil spirits of Grindah, enemies of her people. She cannot get through to him now at all. He is changed into a Wove! But in her heart she believes he is not one, yet he does not acknowledge her and berates her constantly whilst she tries to heal him in the pit. Though they can communicate and she hides him from the others who now definitely want him dead, it is a relationship fraught with anger and despair. Some wanted him dead as a child as he was a Forbidden, and they would certainly kill him now after the Wove attack and his strange appearance and demeanor.

What is he, what is a Wove/Cro really...and what will happen to him...to Nyri.. to Kyaati, to Baarias... to Sefaan who is now very old and has no successor? Sefaan held on stubbornly to her vision of Ariyaana, a yet unborn young woman who will carry the heritage of the Kamaali. But 'who' is she, and when and how will the mysterious Ariyanna come? Or will Nyri be forced to go in search of her and her own destiny? The ending raises hard questions.

I feel the stage is now set for The Enemy Tribe, to come out hopefully later this year. In the meantime, Captive will be re-released to again give you Juaan’s perspective of the time in the pit, which I will be adding to my library of this excellent saga.
