Review
"...this story is extremely well-written and that the characters are very well-developed is not surprising. The innovative, surprising element is the risk she took in portraying a heroine who's in her forties, facing the fears and insecurities ─ and rediscovering the thrills ─ of falling in love. So rare these days. Unfortunately." -Ana Simons, author of Silent Signs
"Miss Durano crafts a beautiful landscape, relatable characters you'll root for, not to mention hot scenes. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll feel every emotion there is within the first few chapters of this book and will continue on until the very last page." -Michelle Jo Quinn, author of Confessions of a Wedding Planner and the bestselling Bliss Series

But discovering a real live princess in my house reminds me of the story of the three bears and some chick who breaks into their pad, eats all their food, and sleeps in their beds.
Just like the one that's in mine right now.
At first, I thought she was dead, but the rise and fall of her chest told me that she was just passed out, probably from the half-empty bottle of Bordeaux I'd been saving for a special occasion. Two grand down the drain, courtesy of Goldi-effing-locks here, who's not only passed out cold, but she's also naked.
I should walk out right now and let her be...
But I can't. Not when there's something else next to the Bordeaux, something that shouldn't be there. And it's sitting on top of a note that begins with the words...
"I'm sorry I failed you...

- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI thought that this read was very moving and emotional. This book's story line quickly pulled me in. It is an older woman/younger man romance that is made up of powerful emotions, drama, passion, heartache, angst, humor and romance. This is a book that very firmly has its feet planted in reality. That is what makes these characters and their story so engaging and enjoyable. Harlow and Dax are two very different people that are very different stages of their lives. These facts do not stop their immediate attraction to each other though. Harlow, I think will resonate with so many readers, for one reason or another. From her painful childhood, her burning need to succeed to be worthy, her struggle with fertility, her terrible marriage and husband and the horrible insecurities and guilt she feels over it all ring true and are so very common for so many of us. Dax was a really good guy. He had a bit of baggage from his past but for the most part he had his head on straight. Together I thought these two made a great couple. I thought that they both brought something into the relationship that made them more as a couple than they were singularly. I really enjoyed it. This is my sincere, impartial review.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI enjoyed every minute of the book. While I figured out much of it, I still couldn't wait to read more.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe high ratings, rave reviews, and the premise of the book is what initially drew me to purchase this book. I'm usually not a fan of first POV, but it's not often you come across a book that has a dual POV from the heroine and the hero. The dual POV makes for an interesting story and adds another layer of distinctiveness.
The story takes place outside of Taos, New Mexico. The author does an incredible job of describing the desert and the environmentally friendly unique home that our main characters stay in. Durano paints such a beautiful vivid description of the New Mexico desert. I would often take a break from the story and Google the places that were described!
However the first person POV - didn't work. Harlow's internal monologue was too long and some of the lines were cheesy;
"Does Dax know just how handsome he is?
Does he realize just how the chiseled lines of his jaw are even more defined by a beard that’s trimmed so perfectly, making this woman’s stomach tighten in knots?
Is he aware just how his mouth begs to be kissed again, for me to toss every ounce of self-respect left in me out the window and just take what I can?"
Dax's POV wasn't believable. It didn't feel like you were reading from a male perspective even with the swear words and talk of his male anatomy whenever he was around Harlow. I never understood why female authors think that the only way to make it a believable alpha male POV is to have them swear and talk crudely. There were too many lines that felt like it was a female talking rather than a male.
It was hard to immerse yourself in the story when the dialogues felt contrived and awkward. The dialogue and storyline didn't flow, it felt forced.
This could have been a great story because of the premise, but it fell short. However that's just my opinion.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHarlow is an accomplished transplant surgeon however she and her husband are having trouble conceiving a child. When their last attempt results in the stillborn death of her son her husband starts divorce proceedings and ensures that she is fired from her position. At her breaking point she ends up on a road trip and ends up at The Pearl where her life is forever changed.
Dax is the much younger sexy successful craftsman who is renting The Pearl to her. Although his first encounter with her makes him privy to information that she doesn’t know they do become friends and then much more. He infiltrates the barriers she has built around her heart but when she must return to face the nightmare her life has become she knows that their relationship could damage the business he has worked so hard for she ends things. Will they be able to find their way back to each other?
I really enjoyed Harlow’s journey as she recovered from the multiple betrayals by her husband and Dax was her rock and only wanted to protect her and ensure her happiness.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI enjoy reading romances with an older female (over 30). She falls for a younger, successful man named Dax when he mistakenly heads to the place he built, but was rented to her. She ran away from her broken marriage, heartbreak, and loss of a career and ended up in New Mexico. It starts with her almost committing suicide in a moment of despair. That caught my attention. It also helped give depth to the story.
Their romance was hot and sexy. It was also built on lies and omissions. Both could be immature and were hurt in other relationships. Their pain pasts made them relatable. Their differences added to the story as they were both successful, but in very different fields. He was mature, and definitely not a kid. She was immature at times, with more to learn, even though she was older than he.
I really appreciated that he got the test done. This was not another romance where in the middle of sex they yell out,
"I'm clean!" That can be so annoying.
Also it was easy to fall for his family and see how different his mother and father's relationship was. Romance does not come in a one size fits all package. There were humorous and touching parts. I also liked that she was a foster kid who was still dealing with being unwanted and being made fun of. He identified more with his mother's side and spoke Spanish to his abuela.
This was my first time reading a novel by this author. I would be interested in reading more by her.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3.25 ★★★✩✩
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHm. So this is one of the books that really make me wish I could give actual X.5* ratings becuuuzz I did get through it fast and I did enjoy it. I am plagued by the mayor suspicion that this is only because the only alternative I had with me while I was reading this, was Triumph of the City: How Our Greatest Invention Makes Us Richer, Smarter, Greener, Healthier and Happier, an absolute disappointment. It simply wasn't what I hoped for, too many provocative statements, too little science. So I enjoyed this instead, thanks for that, Liz.
Stil, I have read better books. Everything she ever wanted was a very pleasant read that had no mayor eye-roll moments - at least not to overly cheesy scenes or anything. It made me relate to real-life moments a lot which I consider a great achievement. I liked the honesty of what it is like to lose a baby and how you overcome humiliation at its finest.
Obviously, it was also a very cute story. I also discovered my passion for romances where the woman is the older one but they are both within all the legal requirements to not make it disgusting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sympa
