Our Journey from Darkness to Light: How 15 Women Chose Strength Over Weakness Kindle Edition
“You’ve just got to listen to what Patricia has to say, she’s so experienced at depression!” my friend Joann declared to her Women’s group.
I never graduated from college. The truth is, I only attended one year and during that time I focused almost entirely on the social scene. However, if degrees were awarded for full life experiences, I guess I may have earned some kind of “experience” degree in depression. I’ve lived through three major depressions and countless minor ones. I guess I must have been a slow learner because it wasn’t till the third depression, when once again, I was down for the count, that I included medication. Although I still have my ups and downs and I have to work daily to maintain a balance, I do take my medicine and use tools contained in this book and continue to learn and apply others. They help me stay in recovery from depression.
In between bouts of depression, public speaking, writing and teaching became a way of solidifying my lessons and giving value to the nightmare I lived through. It also allows me a chance to continue progressing. I am a people pleaser and an approval addict. Yet, I find healing in helping others, as well as myself, so our tunnel of darkness doesn’t have to be so long.
Our Journey from Darkness to Light by Patricia Potts, is a must read for anyone wading through their own painful journey from the shadows of the past, filled with shame, regret and hopelessness to a future brimming with hope and bright possibilities. The courageous stories in this book spotlight the tools and resources utilized, and will be invaluable to anyone going through their own version of a mental, emotional or physical Gethsemane. As a missionary in a 12-step addiction recovery program, I strongly endorse Our Journey from Darkness to Light.

About the author

Patricia is a writer, speaker and singer who loves to share.
Patricia's mother said of her depression, “From the time Patricia was very young she was either all the way up or all the way down.” Years later, after her recovery, a friend made the comment "We just have to invite Patricia to come to speak for us. She as so much to teach because she is SO experienced in depression!"
During the dark days of depression in her twenties, to recovery from brain tumor surgery, facial melanoma surgery, severe arthritis and most recently the loss of their son, Patricia has searched for, developed and found tools to help her through it all. With the help of God, she has learned and personalized tools such as “DARE” (which is explained in this book) to help herself and others navigate the dark waters of depression to the peaceful waters of hope.
Patricia has drawn upon her rich experience, and she has also invited ten other women in this book to share their compelling journeys and how they found strength to overcome the challenges they faced.
When Patricia isn't writing, speaking or playing her guitar, she is often with her husband and their five children and 27 grandchildren.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI finished reading your book. You are very courageous and generous for sharing your story. I related to many, many of your experiences with depression. One example is "I felt as though I had climbed halfway up that mountain of expectations only to roll back down to the bottom." I have described my depressions as a quick slide into a deep hole with a long and difficult process to get out. Your book will certainly help others to better understand this debilitating illness as something much more complex than getting people to feel sorry for you!
Thank you,
Debra Hill

- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2024Format: KindlePatricia Pott’s new book, “Our Journey from Darkness to Light” is a truly inspirational story of determination and overcoming adversity. In her journey through the darkness, she shines a light on how she was able to overcome the trials that she faced which gives hope to others who may face the same type of trials. It also helps those who have loved ones and friends that may be struggling with mental health issues. The tools that she used to overcome the darkness and despair she felt, highlights in a most uplifting way that is sure to be a beacon to anyone who is struggling with mental issues of depression, sadness and grief, regret, self deprecation, and self esteem.
I especially loved that she was so open about her struggles and weaknesses, to show others that they are not alone and can find hope in her story. In addition, the compilation of stories by women who recount their own journeys and how they were able to to navigate from the darkest pits of despair into the light that lifted their spirits and literally saved their lives was very inspirational.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is struggling and needs to look at things with different eyes. By using the tools that are given in this book and putting these ideas in practice, one can learn to think outside of the box and actually see light at the end of the tunnel.
