A Flight of Broken Wings: An Urban Fantasy Thriller (The Aeriel Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition
Eight years ago, Ruban’s home was destroyed and his family murdered by an Aeriel.
When a new Aeriel threat looms over Ragah, the capital city of Vandram, Ruban Kinoh must do everything in his power to avenge his family's past and protect the future of his country.
Which is hard enough without being saddled with a pretty and pompous aristocrat, who seems as useless as he is vain.
Faced with a conspiracy that might cost humanity its hard-won freedom, and accompanied by the bejeweled and glitter-clad Ashwin Kwan, Ruban begins his journey into a land where the past and the future intertwine.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2019Ruban has nightmares. Awful ones. And thus begins a story truly unlike any I have ever read.
Ruban is a Hunter. In fact he is the best Hunter in his region of South Ragah. He is such an outstanding Hunter only he and his partner, Simani, are allowed to Hunt as a pair, all others must hunt as a quartet.
On Emancipation Day, the day celebrating 600 years since the last Aeriel was driven back to Vaan their heavenly home (only in the sense they are back above the clouds), leaving mortals in peace. That's what most mortals believe. Because of Hunters like Ruban and others for the IAW keep any Aeriel who wanders down for mayhem and other things from reaching the ears of the populace.
At its core, this is an epic story of good against evil. The champions are unrivaled in their, er, humanity; the Aeriels are magnificent in the evil they can conjure.
Then Ruban is hit with information that crushes him. He begins to wonder...what if everything he knows is wrong? What if...before he can finish the thought, he becomes embroiled in a fight, not only for his life but for the rest of the world.
This is not a 99 cents, looks interesting tale. (I got it through Kindle Unlimited.) For some reason, even though I am normally a thriller/suspense reader, this fantasy intrigued me.
Unlike most tales of saviors of humanity, the author's prose is highly superior to most books. All of us have a story in us that we want to tell. This is a perfect example of how to write. One tic the author has is dropping in nuggets of character information casually in the middle of a paragraph that has absolutely nothing to do with the character. Beautiful slights of hand throughout.
Getting to know who each character is can be difficult at first (as I write this, I am realizing this is akin to Watership Down, and you know that is a compliment because that's one of the all time best books) but I found at a certain point I had placed them, nicknames and all, in their rightful places without being aware of it.
This is highly recommended for readers of any genre. I look forward to more books by Nupur Chowdhury.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2018Emancipation Day! The day that celebrates 600 years of independence. A day that marks the end of a bloody revolt and war between humans and Aeriels. The day that drove the Aeriels, a species superior to humans, back to their home on the planet Vaan. Remaining is but a rebel group of these creatures, still visiting earth and waging targeted attacks here and there. It takes a special task force of humans, the Hunters, to take them out.
“He was Ruban Kinoh, Chief Hunter, South Ragah Division. He was a soldier, an officer of the state of Vandram and a servant to her people.”
Ruban receives a call to see the Senior Secretary of Defence at the Intelligence and Analysis Wing headquarters (IAW), asap. He is to investigate a leak of information regarding the most powerful weapon against Aeriels, a sifblade that has been secretly developed and is highly sought after. Aeriels sustain themselves primarily on energy derived directly from the sun and the sifblade only needs to touch an Aeriel’s skin and can suck out every last drop of engery from their veins, leaving nothing more than a wrung out carcass.
“Because their energy consume is more direct in nature, it grants them greater physical prowess and accelerated powers of healing.”
Sif is the world’s greatest and fastest conductor of energy. It’s the only substance on earth that can sap an Aeriel’s energy fastest and its’ formula is stored in fragments in various locations and systems across the country.
After an attack on humans at the SifCo facility, surveillance video from SifCo was leaked to the media and it wasn’t just any old Aeriel that attacked SifCo. It was Tauheen, the Aeriel Queen. She is the bearer of the scarlet markings that distinguish her of her monarchy and this is bad news.
Now the whole country is buzzing with talk of Aeriel plots and conspiracies. As far as Ruban can tell, the IAW has been compromised. Someone on the inside is feeding information to the Aeriels.
Can Ruban and his team end these attacks, find the perpetrator, save humanity and restore peace?
You will have to find out!

This book was amazing. So different from any other urban fantasy that I have read before. A breath of fresh air. I loved the whole concept and was swept away in the streets battling it out right next to Ruban.
The idea of beings deriving their energy differently from us, their appearance of wings and the description of their world was such a brilliant idea. The characters seemed exotic, yet rooted in their own systems.
There was plenty of characterization, wit and fun in the novel as well as some heartache and suspense. A clean urban fantasy that delivers fast paced and action packed.
A few moments in the middle were a bit long for me, but from what I can tell, this novel will hold its water with other well-known urban or paranormal fantasies. In my opinion it fits well in the Young Adult or adult fantasy market and I mean that as a compliment.
This is book one of The Aeriel Chronicles and I have a feeling it was just a warm up. Another talented writer, don’t miss out…it’s too good to be missed.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2021After reading Nupur Chowdhury’s novel THE BRIGHTEST FELL, I had high hopes for A FLIGHT OF BROKEN WINGS, the first novel in Ms. Chowdhury’s “Aeriel Chronicles.” It far surpassed my expectations! This novel quickly draws you into the alternate reality that Ms. Chowdhury has created while giving away very few of the secrets. Her characters are believable (some likable, some not) and have you rooting for them from the outset. Her detailed imagining of the Aeriels and their characteristics are satisfying as is her Indian-spiced details of the human world.
One thing is clear after reading this novel and THE BRIGHTEST FELL: Nupur Chowdhury is a born storyteller with a bright future.

The plot is pretty easy to deduce but the behaviors of the characters really seals the deal.
Ruban's character took some time to grow on me but I began to understand his emotions and motivations better and better towards the end. The first handful of chapters are slow but once you get past that everything really goes fast. Around chapter 8 I just couldn't put the book away.
Highly recommend!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting beginning
This is a compelling tale with the right amounts of suspense, humour and magic, with a secondary world that is unique, sufficiently detailed without being too overwhelming, and believable characters. The author avoids many of the repetitive tropes of the genre while at the same time retaining the sense of fantasy. I can't wait to see where she takes us next on this journey.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vengeance and love
A fascinating and imaginative urban fantasy, this book catches from the beginning and moves in an intriguing and unexpected journey to a complicated but hopeful ending.
This is a world where beings much like angels once ruled the world but did so cruelly, holding the world in an iron fist. Human rose up and took back over the world, banishing most of these Aerials back to their own realm and fighting against the few that remain on Earth. Ruban is a Hunter of these remaining Aerials, the best of his time, and is tasked with the protection of a new weapon that will be able to kill his foe easier and with less threat to humans. As the leak of the weapon schematics has come from a neighbouring country he is tasked with working with Ashwin, a royal who has the information about the leak. The two find themselves quickly working against unexpected forces, as the Aerial queen who hasn't been seen in years is acting to find this new weapon and more attacks are happening than have before. This threatens the secret that Ashwin carries, that he himself is an Aerial in disguise, even as his abilities become more and more necessary just for the two to stay alive.
This book was fascinating and well paced as there is a good mixture of investigation along with rapid and unexpected action. There is more at work than just a line pair investigating something and it soon becomes clear that there is someone inside working against them and for the Aerial queen. The story seems to be about this weapon at first but it becomes more about the history of humans and Aerials and what it means for each of their worlds. It is clear from the start that there is more to the Aerials than what Ruban believes, especially since an Aerial wants to help humans and is doing so at risk to his own life. There is a mystery in Ruban's past, a loss that he suffered that isn't laid out at first and clearly has a connection to the current case though it isn't immediately clear why. At the same time there is the question of just how much of human/Aerial history is true and why exactly anything about it would have been changed. It is a fascinating exploration of history changed and written with a need and purpose to help people come together and fight against a common cause, while at the same time obscuring and changing the truth. It brings implications not just for the pair but also for the world and brings up a very complicated problem of personal needs versus the safety of other people.
This book was exciting and a very enjoyable read that tells a complete story in this arc but opens up the possibility for new changes and complications within the world and promises further story ahead!

5.0 out of 5 stars An unexpected delight
I did not know what to expect with this book, but it was not long before it was all I was thinking about and what I desperately wanted to know the outcome of. I loved the two main characters, though both flawed and not terribly three dimensional, their relationship drew me in and helped the story to thrive. The more I got into the story the greater my need to learn the history of the different factions of aerials and the issues and conflict between them. Throw in some fantastic aerial battles and mystery within the government and you have a fantastic read. Give it a chance, you will become as enthralled as I was. Minor issue was that despite knowing it was going to be a trilogy, it did not end with a clear cliffhanger, drawing you into book two. This issue was solved by giving you the first few chapters of book two at the end, now I can’t wait.

4.0 out of 5 stars An amazing book that took my heart away!
A Flight of Broken Wings by Nupur Chowdhary is the first book of The Aerial Chronicles. It starts off with the revelation of some secret formula that the humans are developing to kill the aerials easily and one particular aerial, the "baddest" of the bad creatures is intent on stealing it from them. It is now up to Ruban and his partner Simani to figure out how to stop that from happening, along with taking care of a delegate from another country who seems to be hell-bent on making this information public.
I'll be completely honest here. The beginning of the book did not interest me. I mean, I hated how the kindle version had no index where I can see how long a chapter is but more than that, I hated how slow the book was. The first few chapters seemed tedious to me and I wanted to just quit reading it. But then, had I done that, I wouldn't have realized how much of a gem this book really is. Sure, it started off a little boring but soon I found out how amazing it is. Chowdhary has jammed her book with the perfect amount of thrill, mystery and adventure that any person interested in any of these genres is bound to fall in love with it. And what can I say, I'm a fan of all three!
While reading the book I realized how crucial those starting few chapters were to the book. Not only did they create the perfect momentum for the coming chapters but they also brought an eerie sense of feeling in the pit of my stomach. By the end of the book, hence, I was completely in awe of the book and totally in love with Nupur's work.
I loved the way Chowdhary twisted the world that we have into some sort of dystopian fantasy (I can really not decide what kind of world it is, mainly because there is one point where they even mention Need for Speed) and the effort it would have taken for the world-building is evident in her work. And damn, those fighting scenes rocked! I cannot believe that someone actually wrote as amazing scenes as that. (I mean, it's always hard to depict a fighting scene in words, right?)
By the time I finished reading it, I was head over heels for Ashwin, totally in awe of Ruban and literally ravished by the precise details of the book. I adored it and I'm so glad I came across it. I would recommend this book to each and everyone of you who likes fantasy and adventure should give it a try. Oh, and mystery fans too—this is a book that will fill everyone's list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting and intriguing
This wonderful book took the concept of an angel and showed them in a far more dangerous and tyrannical light. Nupur has a great way with words that kept me hooked from page one.
This book follows a hunter as he goes about his normal life, before a state secret is revealed to the public and a ploy to steal the next generation of weapon against the aeriels, sending him off to find out how this came about and to stop it, with the help of a foreign dignitary. But all is not as it seems.
I am glad that I was shown to this book and cannot wait to continue in Nupur's fantastic world.
