"An easy read with graphically described scenes and dialogues infused with humor."

A night that starts out as the best night of David’s life goes terribly wrong. He and his fiancé, Julie, wander into Banger territory while trying to help a wounded man. David ends up shot in the head and his girlfriend, kidnapped.

Fighting for his life, David is rushed to the hospital where a brilliant neurologist uses a daring new treatment to save him. He survives, but he doesn't remember a thing... not who he is or where he comes from, or that his girlfriend is in terrible danger.

The gang is not about to let a witness to their crimes wander around. A reward is given for his capture, dead or alive.

David doesn't fully understand the circumstances he's in. When the Bangers set up an ambush, he barely escapes into an alley. Just when he's about to get shot for a second time, a strange, vagrant-like creature covered in trash comes to his rescue...

What is it and why is it helping David?

Garbageman will entertain and delight fans of science fiction, horror and medical thrillers.

Arizona author Erik Dean is a radiology technologist, familiar with the medical milieu and uses that knowledge and insight to enhance his novels. He has published two short story anthologies (CRUEL AND UNUSUAL) and two novels in this GARBAGEMAN series. His efforts have achieved awards – as well as a strong audience of readers!

Erik sets his story in his home state of Arizona, Phoenix to be exact, and that familiarity coupled with his affinity for things medical makes his novel credible, despite the paranormal aspects. He weaves a story that is both fascinating and engrossing while being chilly with horror – suffused with humor!

Opening with an award event in which our main character David honors his winning graphic artist girlfriend Julie with a proposal, an event that leads to discovery of a bullet-ridden body on the road – and the mystery opens. Or as the fine synopsis outlines, ‘ A night that starts out as the best night of David’s life goes terribly wrong. Just when he's about to get shot for a second time, a strange, vagrant-like creature covered in trash comes to his rescue...What is it and why is it helping David? ‘

Just the right blend of horror, terrifying elements, supernatural and medical aberrations, and humor delivered with winning speed and enhanced by a very strong (and promising!) concept of a ‘garbageman’ who it seems will be a continuing force in Erik’s output – al result in a very fine and unique novel. This story is in the class of, "superhuman must deal with clouds of bad guys", i.e. set with modern society that includes one element of fantasy. In this case the superhero is, er, a pile of garbage. If nothing else, that is original. At one point, hopelessly outnumbered, our main characters are pursued by a huge number of gangsters and they take refuge, or so they think, in the municipal garbage dump. No escape? What follows is one of the most unusual action scenes I have read. The bad guys are carrying serious firepower, but what is the point of shooting up a heap of trash? The descriptions that follow, while clearly impossible, are highly entertaining.
This is the author's first book, and the start has the odd technical defect. There was a sequence of simple sentences of the sort subject, verb, object. The problem is this leads to jerky text. Fortunately, the style picks up, so bear with it for a short period. The author also inserts his emotive comments occasionally, and this is not to be encouraged. The conversations also verge on the cheesy at times. The characters are difficult to describe because the real hero is, er, a pile of trash, but the real people are reasonably realistic. I found the level of description just right for me, and structurally, the story was well-put-together. It was certainly a pleasant non-serious read.

Garbageman by Erik Dean may just be the most uniquely developed superhero action packed narrative available for the reader who enjoys this genre.

Between the book covers lies a plot that blends the violence of gang terror, advancement in medical technology, the homeless population, the unexplained power of the mind and an unlikely crime fighting action hero known as the Garbageman.

David, the hero and his recent fiancée, Julie, have stumbled onto the turf of the dreaded violent gang know as the Bangers. Julie is abducted and David is left for dead following a seeming fatal gunshot wound to the head. Fortunately, David is treated by a brain surgeon who has developed an experimental drug that has shown promise in restoring the brain in cases of severe trauma.

And so the engaging story begins from the internal healing processes of the hospital to the external gang controlled streets in the desert city of Phoenix. It is on these streets that an unlikely group of "homeless" individuals and their protector, the Garbageman, fight to take back their community.

Garbageman by Erik Dean, from the title, may not entice the reader to invest their time in reading this narrative. However, the book is engaging and grabs the reader's imagination and keeps that interest until the last battle is fought.

The author has a very vivid imagination and does a great job in developing the characters and narrative. There are many twists and turn that are nicely portrayed along with surprising revelations that will grip the reader to the very end. The book, at times, is light and fanciful during the one-liners provided by the characters. However, there are also intense and graphic moments especially as it relates to the violence of the gang activity.

An enjoyable and entertaining read that highlights an unlikely crime fighting superhero.

Idea is ok, but needs much tighter editing. Read like a first novel. Writing needs to be more subtle, develop the characters a bit more next time. Two to three more re-writes and a proper editor who engages with the author is a must. Took a punt with the book as I hadn't read the reviews, it didn't pan out.
