Glass Half Full (Barflies Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 34 ratings

You win some, you lose some.

Back at home with half a college degree after the fiasco of the century sent her packing, it’s safe to say that Renee Nyobé is losing some. She’s a hot mess, and not the cute kind. No, if hot messes had categories, hers would be ‘littering the stairs of the metro station with your sweaty underwear because you were too busy rushing to the job interview you’re already late for to zip up your yoga bag.’

A job—
any job—is just what she needs to get her life back on track, and it might as well be at Montreal’s most famous dive bar, Taverne Toulouse.

Dylan Trottard is winning some. As Taverne Toulouse’s new manager, he’s got one rule for himself: don’t screw up. Following that rule gets a lot harder when the woman he’s spent the past three years trying to forget starts working behind the bar.
They were never supposed to want each other, and they sure as hell aren’t supposed to want each other now. She’s the girl that got away before he even had her, and he’s the guy she didn’t think would ever give her a second glance.

Now they can’t keep their eyes off one another, and the stakes are even higher than before. There’s a lot to lose, but as the pull between them gets harder and harder to ignore, Renee and Dylan start asking how much winning is worth.

Glass Half Full is part of the Barflies series, a set of standalone dramedies that chronicle the lives and loves of the staff at a Montreal dive bar.

Ah! What an entertaining read! Glass Half Full is the second installment in the Barflies series, which can be read as a standalone. I absolutely adored the first book, The Bar Next Door, and I’m so excited to say that this book doesn’t disappoint, either! Glass Half Full takes place in Taverne Toulouse, an exotic dive bar in Montreal (which is also a city I’ve wanted to visit in real life!), featuring Dylan and Renee, our main romantic ship characters, along with some beloved roles from The Bar Next Door such as Monroe, the bar owner. What I love most about this story is the down-to-earth personality from Renee. She’s undoubtedly a badass, who’s strong enough to battle against anxiety. Besides, I’m completely taken aback by the raw emotions from Renee’s vivid description of panic attacks and nervous breakdowns because I can easily resonate with her during my lowest lows.Thankfully, with the company of Dylan, Renee is able to pluck up her courage and find her inner strength. Also, Katia once again surprises me with all those glorious chapter titles and poetry slam ideas; they’re truly the icing on the cake!!All in all, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND GLASS HALF FULL and please go check it out if you had spare time! I hope you’ll enjoy this book/series as much as I do.

This is BY FAR one of my favorite books so far this year!!! Katia's writing is so truly amazing. I feel like I really need to use a Thesaurus, because it's all I keep saying about this book (wink wink), but it's so true! I LOVE how lyrical and full of heart her writing is. It's just so deep. You can tell that she, herself, is a true poet with how she wrote this book. And, for that matter, all of the books before this. From song lyrics to slam poems, she's just so creative! I made a comparison yesterday to her and Kennedy Ryan. These two have such a special way to expressing themselves in writing. It's lyrical, it's powerful, it's truthful and deeply profound.

For those of us who have been following Katia for a long time, we've truly fallen in love with Monroe and Taverne Toulouse, so I was super excited for another character to get their turn. Dylan is someone who I really stared to love as a character and I was super pumped to see him get his promotion. Then, add in Renee. On man, that was the surprise of the century for these two to see each other again!!

When we were introduced to Renee I was really curious about her, and the new got to see her reaction to Dylan my stomach started getting some serious butterflies!! The way that Katia was able to express, in words, the reaction, was phenomenal! I don't think I've ever been able to express a reaction like that and I've felt it! The chemistry between these two was so out of this world. Then we also got some major inside depth into Dylan. From his beginning of shift "Radio" sessions to his serious doubts about himself. It was just very profound. I can't even say deep, because it was on a totally different level, so profound is as close as we get.

The love between these two was everything. The amount of growth that Dylan and Taverne Toulouse was able to give Renee was so powerful. But, just like anything, there's always a downfall. Katia gave us the perfect rollercoaster with this story. We got the happiest of highs and we really got to experience the major doubt and sadness all within the same book. Oh man and the hard topics that Katia wrote about. She's one of the best at this. This story has hard topics of overcoming an incriminating past and some deep anxieties. The way Katia wove those topics into her story was pretty magical. She has this amazing way of pulling something that people deal with (including myself) and helping people with her writing. She's written on more than one topic I can relate to, and it's like a breath of fresh air!

As you can see, I completely adored this book. I'm so sad that I didn't get to read it sooner, and I can't wait for the next one!

I wanted to like this so much because both characters work in the same bar and it seemed like a dynamic ripe with potential.

Unfortunately, it fell short for me.

The story felt a little untethered. Dylan and Renee have Toulouse Tavern in common but not enough of the story takes place there for that to bind them. They share a love of slam poetry and a past involving poetry workshops that the author leans on. But it felt very surface-y -- it didn't explore things as deeply as I hoped it would.

Some of the dialogue was so cheesy it became unrealistic. The sense of time was stilted, too.

Don't get me wrong: it's readable, enjoyable, and far and away one of the better bar romances I've read. But after the first book in this series, it was a bit of a disappointment.

The characters are three-dimensional and truly lovable, with chemistry that really drew me into the story. I loved the way Katia highlights the effects of slam poetry on their lives -- it was a wonderful addition to an already stellar novel.

Renee and Dylan are my favourite characters in the Barflies series so far! Their undeniable love for each other is so intense throughout this book, you can FEEL it. And god it's beautiful!!! Right from the start, you knew their history was too interwoven for them to overlook their attraction, and their story didn't disappoint! Highly recommended!
