About the author

QUINN BLACKBIRD is a wanderer, a caffeine addict & a concern to her teachers.
Now beware!! Blackbird writes about everything she loathes. This makes for books that are darker, grittier, anti-heroes, messed-up characters, and dark worlds. It's not a guarantee you'll find redemption in her pages. Because, as Gaslight Her warns, 'sometimes, the villains win.'

- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a review of the whole series (6 books).
This is not a fairy tale romance with prince charming and a damsel in distress with a lot of voiced feelings and racy scenes. From my limited experience with Quinn Blackbird that's not her thing. This comes with a warning that should be heeded.
That being said...
It was incredible and I loved every second of it! Each book is roughly a 2 hour read. I finished the series in 2 days with a lot of late night reading. The last book I finished at 3am this morning. No regrets. I couldn't stop myself. I did find the first book a little slow in the beginning and it took me until the end to really get hooked.
This is my second series of hers and I am hopelessly addicted.
First of all the worlds she builds are beautiful and terrifying. I still have a million questions about this one but I see there are other books in that same universe and I plan on reading them all.
Her characters are deeply flawed, sometimes tragic and real. The main character, Valissa, is not exactly someone I would normally route for, she's the id, a monster. Apathetic about almost everyone and unapologetically selfish with murderous thoughts. Broken but strong, smart, and fierce. She accepts her dark side and uses it to become more. It was a refreshing change of pace from the self righteous heroines I usually love to read about. The ones who sacrifice themselves to save the world. Valissa only wishes to save herself and sometimes that's all we can hope for.
What really sets her books apart from pretty much every other fantasy romance out there is the violently dominate male characters. This is where the warnings should be taken to heart. I personally love it but I can only speak for myself. I loved and hated the love interest(s) several times throughout the series.
Ultimately I adored the ending and was very happy at the path it took. The book hangover was strong on this one. I found myself rereading the ending this morning I loved it so much. I highly recommend this series. I greatly enjoyed it and plan on reading through Quinn Blackbird's entire catalog.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI needed Something like this after a couple bad books in a row. There is good world building and the flow of the book is nice. You really get to know the main character and understand her thought processes. The book draws you in but still leaves enough of a mystery that you're excited for the second book
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchasePrince Poison in my opinion could have been a great first installment to the series however there were things in it that could use a little more attention. The author gave you what you wanted to start a series, the introduction to Lissa’s life and power, or should I say curse? And what she has dealt with in her time on the small island that she calls home. It would have been nice to actually see how the gods came to be and what the world looks like or how it is run. I guess i wanted more of a backstory and information.
I want to state now, that there are some contradicting statements that I was confused on. In the beginning it seemed as if Lissa was an empty shell, she felt no connection that tied her to basic human emotions. Like how she didn’t care that her young nephew swam in the ocean and could have drown or that her mother died protecting her yet later on in the book she delves into how sad and broken she was over her mothers death. I’m not sure what Lissa truly feels as she then describes the “monster” that lives inside her.
This then moves us on to the characters. As I’ve mentioned above Lissa’s seems contradictory and a little jaded? It seems she is fast to anger and then the next moment nosedives into other emotions that left me with whiplash. I say jaded, because her character seems to have no concern over anyone but herself. Her brother has warned her many times of what could happen if someone unveils her gift however she doesn’t listen or care to listen. The way she treats Petal, who is a child, if even a spoiled one leaves me a little irked as she cannot drum the decency to understand that this is her nephew and even if she hates the child’s mother doesn’t have to act the way she does. I see it as a character flaw that turned me against liking Lissa. Ava, as a secondary character left much to be desired as well as Jasper. There was no real connection to any of them besides the hate between classes and the fear of the Gods. However i asked myself, if Lissa truly feared the Gods and their worshippers and minions, wouldn’t she choose to follow her mother and brothers warning of these ships and sailors? Wouldn’t she choose another job that shelters her from the outside world? What made her go into that lifestyle besides boredom?
In the end, the book leaves you with a cliffhanger. Which we as readers, could guess since it is the beginning book of a series. However much it is a cliche the way it ended, the author in fact does leave us the readers wanting to see what happens to Lissa and Ava. I suppose this could be for the fact that the story truly felt like it ran off of a cliff abruptly. I hope the author really digs deep and doesn’t give us another antihero - Prince Poison - that isnt so cliche and ends up falling in love with Lissa for superficial reasons. I’m rooting for this series to become better in the books to come as it is an interesting story.

All she has to do is hold your hand & someone else's to transfer them. She knew from a tragic childhood that she was different. Her mother died trying to protect her. She didn't realize how easy it could happen. She also has a darkness inside her that makes her think of doing horrible things. It causes her to have no emotions sometimes, when she should. She makes a mistake & her secret is revealed. Now she is on a journey that may end in death. Find out what happens. Can't wait to read the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Serialised dark fantasy starter to give you goosebumps
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHoly moly! This is like the ungodly lovechild of Trudi Canavan's Priestess of the White and Pirates of the Caribbean. I never knew I needed this. It may only be a relatively short introductory novella, but there is a whole load more to unpick than first meets the eye.
I cannot get over the atmosphere this short serial-starter creates. It's tense and dangerous, full of magic of the darkest kind. Characters and places are vividly written, splashes of vibrant colour setting the scene in a mix somewhere between ancient mythology and the 1800s. It shouldn't work, but it does. Some things don't initially make sense, but explanations come in dribs and drabs that flesh out the world and Lissa's character.
About Lissa. Oh dang, do I love me a good brave-coward character. Yes, that is a contradictory description, but know this: she's obviously the "hero" and yet she doesn't run into situations full of confidence and vigor. Her anxieties feel realistic, not overblown or completely forgotten about. And her mental state, well... (view spoiler) This could be interesting.
Beware the cliffhanger at the end of this episode. It is an introduction, episode one, so is short on actual story. I devoured it so fast I nearly got mental indigestion. It raises so many questions. No romance yet, but if the tone is anything to go by it's not going to be your sickly sweet Happily Ever After...

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really liked this start in a new series. It is short but sometimes I’m looking for a sort read. This is not my usual read. It is captivating and has lots of twists and turns. If you are looking for something new try this one, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Best for timepass
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseEven bad plots and high school level writing can outrun boredom with good sex scenes. Alas this book fails to provide even that. The only thing I liked about this book was that the heroine was not a typical goody virgin godess. She had flaws, she owned them, she was real. We need more heroines like her in literature.
