No More Bad Dates: A Sweet Roommates/ Friends-to-Lovers Romcom (Friends & Forevers Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 2,111 ratings

Two friends. One pact. Love was never supposed to be part of the deal… until it was.

Ever been dumped at a wedding? I have. I’m Sophie McCarthy—chronic dater of red flags, narcissists, and dumpers at weddings. I even dated one guy who believed in the “mermaid lifestyle.” Don’t ask.

Desperate to break the cycle, my friends and I make a pact: every new guy gets vetted. Fail the test? It’s a no. Pass? Well, we haven’t gotten that far yet—mostly because my roommate, Jason (serial dater of nurses and my frustratingly hot best friend), keeps rejecting every single one I bring home.

Apparently, no one’s good enough.

It’s supposed to be friendly concern, but those lingering looks, that smirk when he says my dates are hopeless? Yeah… it’s starting to feel like something else.

But falling for Jason would be a terrible idea.

So why does it feel so right?

Set in New Zealand,
No More Bad Dates is a fun, heart-warming friends to lovers rom com for fans of Sophie Kinsella, Bridget Jones's Diary, Lindsey Kelk, and TV shows like Jane the Virgin. It's a light-hearted, humorous, and fun full-length novel that can be read as a standalone title. Friends & Forevers is a spin-off of Kate O'Keeffe's bestselling Flirting with Foever series.

When her current boyfriend dumps her during her boss's wedding, Sophie McCarthy decides that she's not putting up with any more bad dates. Her roommate Jason joins with her two best friends to vet the guys asking Sophie out.
Friends to lovers is not a particularly new concept in contemporary romances, but the author does a nice job of making it fun. Jason and Sophie are a cute couple and the extra drama with Sophie's job working at a tea room added a lot to the story. Definitely want to see what happens with the other two friends now.

Holy coffee! I really like this book. There is a fun cast of characters, a romantic plot, a career change, of sorts, and a few horrible but hilarious potential boyfriends. It took me a few chapters to really get into it, but when I got to the date with Oliver, I started laughing out loud. There's also some emotional turmoil, so there is a little angst. This is a laugh and cry book!

I like Sophie, the main character, who is happy with her barista job and living with one of her best friends, Jason. I actually like her female friends, Erin and Darcy, more than Sophie. They steal every scene they appear in. Every. Scene.

Oh, and Sophie's family! Sophie is the youngest child, and her older siblings are overbearing while they try to "help" her with her career. The oldest sibling, Sean, quotes Shakespeare all the time. At first, I thought he was pretentious, but since I enjoy Shakespeare's plays and poetry, Sean grew on me. I love how he used a famous line from Hamlet at the end of the book.

A few of my favorite things: the Pact and the Rules (including the vetting process), Jason's help with the vetting, David's aquatic lifestyle, Oliver's date (laugh and squeal out loud funny), and the cakes (of course).

A few things I noticed were lacking: descriptions of the characters (I don't know what most people look like), suspense (a little bit, but it was predictable), and description of places (what is Auckland like?).

Okay, this book has a lot of 3-, 2-, & 1-star reviews. I think it was a 4-star story. Good relationship development with friends & family, even though some of Sophie’s siblings were *pretty* annoying. The romance factor wasn’t high but was enough. I don’t often like books that advertise themselves as funny, but I did laugh a few times, especially during some cringe-worthy moments. Sophie’s third date had my sympathy; I felt bad for him. Maybe he will get his own story? He seems amazing.

I can see that it is a series starter, and as such it needs to introduce various characters. We didn’t see much character development for Jason. The job situation was bothersome, and Sophie was a little whiny. I can’t speak to the NZ authenticity as I’m from the USA.

I’m a serial proofreader & I found fewer than 8 minor errors, so a lot of mistakes/typos may have been corrected by 2023. For a Kindle book, that’s pretty good, unfortunately.

If you go into it understanding that a fair amount of it is more like women’s fiction, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Where would we be without best friends? Sophie has her best friends, her beloved employers, and her roommate Jason, but she really wants a decent guy to date and have fun with. The characters are all so fun and lovable. Sophie's Irish family is so close and so irritating as only siblings can be. Her dates are interesting. The roommate, well, there's the problem that only reading this good book will solve.

This is the first in the series (all stand alone but buy them all because you’ll want their stories) No More Bad Dates Pact.
High Tea is a spin off from the Cozy Cottage Cafe series (go buy those too)!
I was very excited to hear Sophie’s story and Kate O’Keeffe did not disappoint! Sophie’s roommate and best friend, Jason, joins the group, to help her weed out the whacko dates. Through failed dates, Sophie starts realizing how much more fun she has being with Jason, and seeing him in a different light (or just out of the shower with a towel wrapped around his waist)!:).
Off to read book 2…Darcy’s story!

There are some pretty funny moments in this book. Sometimes authors advertise that their book is LOL funny, etc., and you end up wondering as you read when the funny parts are supposed to happen. This book is funny, sweet, and an interesting light romance. I liked both of the main characters alot, especially Jason, the male lead who helps provide quite a few of those LOL moments. This book ticked all the boxes for me as an enjoyable Rom-Com so I feel that I can give it a good recommendation. If you're looking for a fun romance that isn't full of tons of angst & depressing internal dialogue, this is it. 😊

This book was like a breath of fresh air! Nothing like the cliche friends to lovers stories I'm used to.Jason was one of my fave characters from the beginning. He was always super supportive and he definitely made me laugh a lot. Sophie was very easy to relate too and I actually felt sad for her towards the end. The supporting characters like her 2 best friends were also great elements to this story. I did feel as if more background on certain characters would be appreciated (but it wasn't necessary and just me wanting more of this plot). I would say the author did an excellent job at making you feel as if you were part of the story. Amazing job and I hope there's more to read or more to come. This is an author to definitely look out for!

This first book in the new Cozy Cottage spin-off series is super-cute and funny. I love the characters - Sophie and Jason make a great team - and the supporting cast features not only the usual Cozy Cottage Café suspects (most prominently Bailey and Paige), but also Sophie's BFFs Erin and Darcy as well as Sophie's whole Irish (non-mob!) family.

With all the teasing and light banter between Sophie and Jason, I can't help but picture Ryan Reynolds as Jas.
Erin and Darcy are a hoot, and I'm soooo looking forward to reading their stories and them finding their own HFN or even HEA!
