Hope Over Fear (The Over Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
Today is the day - the day the man I love marries someone else.
I don't deserve pity or sympathy. I've made my bed. I left Mason and ripped his heart to pieces as I ran away. The guilt and sorrow consume me, threatening to choke me everyday.
But today is a new beginning. Today is the day I will wake up with a renewed resolve and determination to do better ... to be better ... to be worthy. My name is Sara Preston, and this is my story about what happens after.
*Hope Over Fear can be read as a standalone novel. This novel is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2014I loved this book. It was a strong debut by J.A. and I'm very anxious to read more from her.
As soon as I read the prologue, I was hooked!! I had no idea what to expect, but I knew I needed more. The biggest thing I always look for in books are the characters. I've read a lot of books lately where the female character is weak and becomes annoying. Sara (main female character) is NOT weak! She has her insecurities, but she never lets them stop her. She felt like she had jumped off the page and was telling me everything while sitting next to me. She is so genuine with such a great heart. I loved Sara!
The side characters? Love them. I wish they were all in my band of friends and we could go out for some margaritas. They are funny, caring, and... I just love them!
Her love interest (who shall remain nameless to keep the review spoiler free) is H O T. Like panty-melting hot. He's so genuine and REAL. I think that was one of my favorite things about this book. The characters were REAL. They weren't flawless and perfect. They had flaws and real struggles, but they kept their head held high. The characters alone get 5 stars from me.
The storyline? Awesome. It's different without being so outside the box that it leaves you scratching your head. The way the story weaves together is so good.
J.A.'s writing was good. So, so good. I can't praise it enough!
All in all, this was a stunning debut by an author that I recommend you keep your eye on!

- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 20153.5-4 stars. I liked this story and the overall message. This isn't a second chance romance where Sara is trying to reconcile with her ex-boyfriend, Mason. He really does get married and moves on to his own HEA although the prologue sets up the plot where Sara obviously did something terrible to hurt him deeply in the past and she can't seem to forgive herself for it, but needs to let him go. Whatever it was, it's been haunting Sara for all this time and everyone in the community is aware of it.
Sara is really good at her job as a L&D nurse and she got a job at a local center to help adoptive parents - Sara actually shines at her jobs. Truthfully, I found Sara hard to connect with. She had relatable qualities, but as an overall character, I couldn't form an attachment to her. On the one hand, she was a true good girl at the core, works hard, stays out of trouble and only wants the best for other people. She was definitely insecure and had self-esteem issues, putting herself in a place of self-loathing. When Adam comes into the picture, suddenly Sara is all snappy and full of sass, which might be a tribute to the emotions Adam brings out of her, but seemed a little uncharacteristic.
Adam is another person I couldn't invest myself in. Sure, I liked him all right, but I wasn't feeling the chemistry between he and Sara. Yes, the chemistry was there and they could feel it, but I was indifferent towards it. Adam is actually a caring guy who wants to get to know all of Sara, including the bad. Their problems stem from distrust because Adam won't let Sara into the most important part of his life if Sara won't tell him the truth about her past. There are definitely scenes that are charged with emotions and well-written. As for Sara's secret, it wasn't nearly as bad as I had imagined so basically Sara was vilified way worse than she deserved. If anything, I did admire Sara for knowing when to let go and when to hold on. The secondary characters are entertaining and I'm interested in discovering more about them.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2014I read the prologue of this book and I was sucked in immediately... I needed to read this book, and when I did I was not disappointed. I loved Sara's journey, when one door closes another one opens... She is on the road of recovering from loss a love, loss of a friend, loss of a life she knew. We meet her friends who are funny and supporting. The book touches some very important issues beautifully. And Sara's love interest, omg I loved him... So swoonworhty and sexy. The circle of friends that we meet in this book are all amazing and I'm really hoping everyone gets their own book. While reading this book I was truly amazed how talented the author is, the story flows great, her character are hilarious. I laughed, got teary eyed, loved every minute. Exceptional debut from a talented first time author!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2014I believe the story was really good. I liked all the little smaller l stories involved in the book like Abby story. But the connection band true love between the two main characters was as by there didn't feel it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome debut
With 6 Children and a grandbaby, I've probably spent more time in labor/delivery rooms than most guys who aren't paid to be there. And those times that you're there? Everything is on high alert. Its amazing looking back just how much there is to remember about each and every visit.
Emotions run high. Tempers tend to get short. Time speeds up and slows down seemingly at whim. The whole thing is an adrenaline rush.
And the nurses? Yeah, you know when they're taking bets on how long the wife is going to hold out before she's begging for pain relief medication
With all that drama, and a new patient (or three) to guide through the process every shift, its gotta be one of the toughest (though rewarding) jobs on the planet.
That's what Sara, the main character from Hope Over Fear does for a living, and J.A. Derouen does a masterful job of portraying her, and her role.
Beyond Sara, we're introduced to a whole cast of interesting and well developed characters, as they interact with Sara and her love interest Adam.
The story starts out with Sara recovering from the fall out of a bad breakup and, as the story of her new developing relationship with Adam unfolds, its contrasted with flashbacks to her previous relationship with her former best friend turned lover, Mason.
Both stories are woven together, with the occasional chapter from Adam's POV so that by the time Adam DOESN'T understand what happened in the past, the reader does, creating an interesting perspective for the climax of the story.
Throughout all of this is deftly woven a subplot involving a young woman struggling with her decision to adopt out her as yet unborn baby. Sara serving as a mediator in the adoption process and support person for young Abby.
I was really impressed with the depth and complexity of this debut novel, and plan on jumping straight into the follow up which tells the story of one of Sara's good friends, Alex.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read.
Wow. This book did not go how I expected.
After reading the blurb for this book I already made my mind up and the road I saw it going, but was surprised.
It defiantly showed me to never judge a book by the cover.
A really good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars great debut from the author
The synopsis for this book completely drew me in and i was not disappointed. The story did not go how i thought it would Sara does not end up with who i think she would, but the story on how she got to her new love was very enjoyable. It does deal with difficult subject matter that some people may have difficulty with, I loved all the supporting characters and Adam was dreamy and a guy you will fall for. A great debut novel.
