Editorial Reviews
Review
This isn't a book for the faint of heart, though. Like all dystopian, it's going to get messy before the resolution. I can feel it in my bones. I am beyond excited for the upcoming books in this series (and am considering reaching out for ARCs!). Don't miss this one, guys. You'll regret it." - Reedsy Discovery

- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2024"Iron Crow: A Post-Apocalyptic Survival Thriller (The Crawling Girl Book 1)" by Kim Petersen immerses readers in the heart of dystopian Seattle, a city tightly governed by rigid societal rules and under the authoritarian control of the aristocratic Crow class, led by the formidable Lord Corvus. Rayna, a resilient Hydran, ekes out a living in the depths of Lake Union, dutifully following established norms until the arrival of a mysterious boy disrupts her world, carrying a secret that shatters her understanding of reality.
The narrative unfolds with palpable tension as Rayna confronts a pivotal choice – to stand resolutely for the truth, irrespective of the consequences, or to succumb to a society teetering on the brink of anarchy. The enigmatic secret becomes a catalyst, propelling Rayna into a position where her courage may well alter fates and spark a rebellion against the oppressive regime of the Iron Crow.
In "Iron Crow," Kim Petersen skillfully spins a riveting tale where truth evolves into a potent weapon, and Rayna emerges as an emblem of resistance in a society on the verge of collapse. The author's adept storytelling, featuring intricate characters and intense action, catapults readers into a gripping post-apocalyptic adventure. As the inaugural installment in The Crawling Girl series, "Iron Crow" pledges an exhilarating journey through a world where bravery and rebellion might unlock the doors to an unforeseen destiny. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2024Being a native to Seattle, I was very intrigued with the dystopian viewpoint. The world building of the dystopia castes was a little hard for me to grasp personally, but this also was a new genre for me, so that that with a grain of salt!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2024My rating is actually a 3.5, because the story itself was okay, the writing is good, and the world-building was top-of-the-line engaging. I loved the PNW setting and Lake Union as a focal point.
However, the main character Rayna was a disappointment. She's twenty-one but acts like an angst-ridden teenager, as do the gang of bullies who terrorize her. What bothered me most about her interaction with these childish thugs is they tricked her twice in almost the same way by stealing from her, and she got taken advantage of both times. Then, to top it off a third time (without giving any spoilers) she allowed them to steal the one piece of incriminating evidence that resulted in getting a young boy executed and landing her in jail.
I really enjoy dystopian and post-apocalyptic stories and very much wanted to like this one, but the main character fell far short of my expectations of an engaging heroine.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2024Iron Crow: A Post-Apocalyptic Survival Thriller ( The Crawling Girl Book 1) by Kim Petersen is a great first book in a new dystopian future series. The book follows Rayna who has been struggling to stay alive under the oppressive rule of the crows. She meets a young boy who tells her something that could change everything in her world. But the question is whether or not she is willing to risk the delicate balance with the crows to start a rebellion that may switch the power balance of the world forever. Young adults will greatly enjoy this new series and the fascinating characters it contains. Anyone who is a fan of the Hunger Games series will also like this as there are some similarities that are highly engaging. The action is fast, and the narrative is very entertaining.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2024Great tale of rebellion against in a dystopian very similar to hunger games but different enough that you will still have fun reading the book
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2024Iron Crow is the first book of The Crawling Girl series and a perfectly crafted Dystopian world of elites lead by crow leader Lord Corvus and the lesser Crawlers who scavenge amongst the depths of lake Union for the valuable aluminum scrapes they can trade for food and resources.
MFC Rayna is a third generation crawler and everyday is a struggle for survival along with the others of her village Hydran.
Changes though are on the horizon in this well written adventure of mystery, intrigue, secrets, and romance that immerses the reader in its deftly imagined and emotionally charged storyline.
War is coming, and rules are made to be broken.
