Little Fire: A Fantasy Romance (Warriors of the Five Realms Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 4,241 ratings

She’s broken from a past she can’t remember. He’s scarred from a past he can’t forget.

Declan can kill with a blink of his eye. Jaded and cold, he rules his kingdom the same way he does his heart—with ruthless pragmatism. So why does he risk all to protect a little mortal during a slave-trade uprising? Now stranded in the demon realm, the loss of his powers is the least of his troubles. The woman may have a frustratingly tender heart, but she has enough fire in her soul to thaw the ice in his veins.

He could take her by right, but he wants more than acceptance. He wants her willing surrender...

Evangeline is chained by a past she can’t remember. Her fractured memories keep her shy and single. When she is thrust into a savage world in the arms of a deadly archmage, he becomes her only chance of survival. But soon she realizes her unnerving protector may not be as callous as he appears, and her heart may be as much at risk as her life.

His desire for her is no secret, but she wants more than scalding lust. She wants his icy heart...

Can they survive the nightmarish realm long enough to break down each other’s walls?

10/10. Would read again.
5 out of 5 stars
10/10. Would read again.
Wow. This book was exactly what I look for in a fantasy romance! What I liked: -The push and pull between the hero and heroine. There was a chase, but it never felt too one-sided or like it dragged out. -The creatures. There were a few in here that had my eyebrows shooting into my hairline. Very creative and very creepy. -The angst. I cried a few times but the author was merciful enough to pull the characters through each heart wrenching disaster before all was truly lost. What I loved: -The grand scale of this fantasy world and all its unique variety. -Declan. He's a borderline demi-god with a tortured soul. Enough said. -The almost musical quality to Hollee Mand's prose. -That twist. What I hated: -Nothing. It's been a long time since I picked up a fantasy romance of this caliber. If you like C.L. Wilson, I think you should give this one a shot. You won't be disappointed.

What a stunning book! I thoroughly enjoyed reading Little Fire. The action, the romance, the fantasy, the characters! The writing was well done and the story was so interesting. My heart sped up in excitement and it ached in sadness. I got butterflies in my stomach and chills across my skin. I FELT so much while reading this and nowadays that rarely happens. I had to force myself to slow down. I was so eager to find out what happened next. While I did guess the "twist" pretty early on it didn't take away from the story. I don't think it was meant to be a big "aha!" reveal but more of something the readers know but the characters don't. This book is definitely fantasy but it is all so believable. Made me feel like it was a true story. The plot and the dialogue. The behaviors of the characters. It was real. Now the villain wasn't too villainous.. yet. But I know there is more to come. And I am very much looking forward to it. I have kindle unlimited subscription but Little Fire by Hollee Mands is a book I would (and will) buy. Full price, hard cover. Thank you, Hollee, for reminding me why I love to read. Thank you for taking the time to write a beautiful thoughtout story instead of pushing something half worked. I can't wait to read the next.

I had this in my samples for several months before I decided to start reading it. I honestly don’t know why it took me so long to start because it’s a great read. I wasn’t even halfway done with this one when I ordered the second. Declan and Evangeline are so special. They help each other overcome their past traumas and grow together as a couple. It’s great. The story was and the world building was good. I enjoyed the plot very much. But sometimes everything was hard to follow. I get that with fantasy novels, it can be confusing but sometimes I found myself rereading parts over again because it didn’t make sense. Also there was revelations told hut the FMC already knew it but acted surprised? It was weird but I went along with it. Also the ending of the book is just one big, huge twist that I wasn’t expecting. It had me at 1am yelling at the book. I’m not upset at it. I wasn’t expecting the betrayals or confessions that happened. I think my favorite character isn’t the FMC but Declan himself. This man has gone through so much in his LONG life and things just keep getting ripped from him. The same goes for Evangeline too. It’s just a mess of sadness and grief and it tore me up but I ate that drama up! It was delicious! There were a few spicy scenes. They weren’t too crazy but it was killing me what Declan had to do ( when you read you’ll understand lol). All in all, this is a solid 4.5 read for me. I do highly recommend this book. BUT please give me a map. I need a map to visualize this world. I’m having a hard time with it.

Recently I had the honor of reading an advanced copy (ARC) of Little Fire by Hollee Mands; I was completely enthralled by it! Now this is novel is not meant to be read quickly. Instead, it is to be read slowly as if indulging in a decadent and gooey chocolate dessert in which you savor each morsel, crumb, and bite. Hollee Mands is skilled “pâtissier” who flawlessly builds multi-complex sentences with poetic ease and sweetens the plot with her wordsmithing.

The novel spotlights two perplexing characters: Evangeline and Declan. Evangeline was a young, kind woman, a commoner, who aspires to become a healer. Declan, on the other hand, was an Archmage with various lethal powers. Despite being on opposite ends of prestige and social statue, their lives converge when Evangeline attempts to save her friend Stefan who is being pulled into a portal by an Unseelie. Declan hears her cries for help, pulls Stefan from the portal, and grabs Evangeline into his arms as they both disappeared into the portal.

At first Evangeline was terrified of the man who came through the portal with her and soon was in shock in this new environment. With Declan unable to use his full powers in the shadow realm that was ruled by Draedyn, he knew it would take Gabriel and his men days to find their location. In the meantime, all he could do was to keep the mortal Evangeline safe from predators. It was this experience which was precipitated their burgeoning friendship. Evangeline had a traumatic and violent past as exhibited in her horrible nightmares. Declan was guarded and mysterious and seemed to manifest a cold-hearted disposition toward Evangeline. The more time they spend together in close quarters in the shadow realm, their rapport improves and trust and empathy begin to develop.

How will Declan and Evangeline survive the brutal environment and dangerous predators of the shadow realm? Will Declan and Evangeline be rescued from the shadow realm and be brought back to Amereen? Is there a future for Declan and Evangeline despite their vast differences?
Like a master weaver, Hollee Mands intertwines suspenseful plots with a plethora of unusual characters to create a novel that will keep readers spellbound as it maneuvers their emotions through plot twists, bewilderment, shock, and betrayals.

Now snuggle into a comfy chair, wearing cozy attire, with your favorite beverage within arm’s reach as you begin a journey into the Five Realms… where nothing is as it seems.

This was a re-read and I’m so glad that I did. I had forgotten what a chokehold this series had on me. It is the perfect series for when I need to feel a similar high to what ACOTAR gave me. This was an emotional story, written beautifully and full of mystery, romance and action.

Declan’s tough, stoic and intense nature perfectly compliments Evie’s sunshine, gentle temperament. The romance between them literally made me giddy. Declan very much has an ‘I hate everyone but you’ type of attitude and Evie is selfless, sweet and is the kind of character you can easily love. The supporting characters are also fantastic and I love all the relationships Evie and Declan have with their friends and family.

Lastly, this has the touch her and die and who hurt you tropes - double whammy.

Quick note: Please check the TWs for this one - there are a few very heavy themes throughout the book.

If there is one Romance Sub genre that fails me, then it’s Fantasy Romance. Trust me, we are not friends even after my many many trials. I really love the idea of it but I loose interest in the books pretty quickly.
It’s rare that I like one BUT this one just proved me why people are gaga over this sub genre.

Dear God, what did I just read?

    Absolutely-Freaking-Amazing!

From the Prologue itself I was invested and done for. I knew pretty early on it’s going to blow my mind and it definitely did.

Declan Thorne- you’re one masterpiece hero. I loved how he was with Evangeline. His ‘touch her and die’ vibe made me swoon. Their connection took time to develop and deepen and I enjoyed reading it.

As a powerful being with a past like his, he was perplexed with the way Evangeline treated him. And that’s what I liked the most about her. She was kind to the core. Sweet but so resilient.

Another thing I enjoyed was the plot. There was no loophole to the story, every reason and action was solid. And many times I wondered about the endgame and still couldn’t predict it. Let’s not even talk about the epic battle scene (I’ll run out of place).

Their world was Enchanting but with an old world charm. Loved the various secondary characters. Especially Declan’s battlemages.
The writing style and the many new words is just chef’s kiss 🤌.

But there are many triggers in the story. It’s pretty dark.
