With a background in illustration and graphic design, R. J. Hampson brings a unique blend of creative thought to his work in both traditional and digital media but is happiest when he tells a story.

Originally known as the author and illustrator of the Bunyip Tree series of children's books, Russell writes: "I was intrigued by the machines in my local Australia Post mail center and was inspired to draw them. This became the seed that inspired my first illustrated children’s book which features a kangaroo, called Roopert, who delivers the mail."

"Having cottoned on that being a children’s book author and illustrator meant I could draw whatever I liked, the next book was about a wombat named Wombi who loved heavy machinery. And then came a possum, platypus, koala, fire engines, trains, and before I knew it there were 5 in the series and plans for more!"

And in 2020, Russell decided to release some of his more fanciful illustrations as a series of coloring books.

"Adding color to my illustrations is so much fun. I wanted to share the joy of this almost meditative experience and launched the R.J.Hampson series of coloring books. Whether you enjoy coloring quirky buildings, manic machines, moonlit gardens, or underwater scenes, there is something for everyone in these books."

Today, Russell draws and writes in his studio on the Sunshine Coast, Australia, where the beach calls to him along with the parrots.

    RJ Hampson books are a favorite of mine for several reasons.

    RJ's books always make me smile when I color in them and even when I don't. Just flipping through them is enough to lift my mood. I don't want calming. I don't want relaxing. I want warm fuzzies and laughter. And that is I get from RJ's work.

    His characters are absolutely fantastic - expressive, unique, and hilarious. I didn't realize that one of his characters might sometimes sneak over into a different book. That was a fun surprise!

    The second set of images is genius. This is where I try things like using gesso or workable spray fixative on a page. Maybe I will try a new background that I have never tried and I won't have to be concerned if I "mess up" the second one. Of course, buying a back up book is great idea, too. Or I cut out the page and put it on a clipboard so it is easier for me to manage. Or I give it to my niece so that she can color with me.

    The price for the product is great, in my opinion. I personally would have paid more.

    Things I don't like about RJ's books? I will get back to you, if I ever find something I don't like.

    I love this artist! The pictures are whimsical, but not childish. The drawings use a lot of the entire page so you feel that you really have plenty to color. One of the things I really like about R.J. Hampson's work is that you never have to look for the things that some artist will just skip over. If the end of a leg (for example) is behind a tree or something, and you look for the rest to color, some artists just never finish the leg (or whatever else you might be coloring). RJH will finish details like that so there is no dropoff. It really shows his dedication to his work. I already have several of his books and plan on buying them all. Buy them and enter into other worlds. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have! Don't forget to look for the small skull he puts in a lot of his drawings.

    I love this Artist’s books. This one is my favorite. The pictures are different than everyone else’s and just make you want color them all at one time. You’ll find everything from cute animals on bikes to medieval knights in a magical wonderland.

    Sometimes I make a copy of a coloring page as I’m nervous I’ll mess it up, but here you don’t have to that. There are 2 copies of each page, but the 2nd ones have a black background. You can try different ways of coloring them.

    I like the drawings and the paper is perfect for me. However, as with many of these coloring books, it has too much foliage. I realize it's a good space filler, but I wish artists wouldn't rely on it quite so much. If I wanted floral, I would buy a book that focuses on that.

If I could have one wish it would be to have these beautiful illustrations on better paper, but I am learning how to make the best of the Amazon paper using oil-based colored pencils, as there's no way I want to miss out on RJ's books.
