National Burden (Corps Justice Book 5) Kindle Edition
Following his predecessor's abrupt departure, newly appointed President Brandon Zimmer must deal with aggressors at home and abroad. The sharks sense his weakness and are out for blood. The burden might just be too much to handle for the young president. Will President Zimmer cave to outside forces, or stand strong with his friends from Stokes Security International (SSI), like former Marine Cal Stokes and ex-Navy SEAL Travis Haden? And with their own responsibilities weighing heavy on their shoulders, will the team at SSI be able to stop a plot to manipulate the stock market and the country's economy?
Regardless of the outcome, one thing is for certain: Everything is about to change. A portion of all profits from the sale of my novels goes to fund Operation C4, a non profit dedicated to supporting young military officers in and out of uniform. For more information visit OperationC4.com.

WHY C. G. COOPER MATTERS
Fiction has the power to change lives.
Pay a visit to Cooper Country and you’ll understand why. With his unique voice and flair for creating characters you’d love to hang out with, C. G. Cooper imparts every one of his novels with messages that perfectly illuminate what Faulkner called, “the human heart in conflict with itself.” In them, characters confront hard truths about life, the necessity of war, the military industrial complex, and why and how good men and women die.
But there are messages within the messages.
There is the power of the individual to triumph over evil against overwhelming odds; the struggle of good people against their inner demons; there is brotherhood, family, the discovery of allies in unexpected places, struggles with faith; there is community; there is authenticity; Cooper’s heart is on every page, beating hard and fast through action and moments of tenderness alike.
Expect high-octane action, slow-burn thrills, and gut-wrenching drama. Expect the ultimate conflict of the human heart.
This is Cooper Country. Lives will change.
THE LOWDOWN
Drawing on his days as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps—a stint that came on the heels of a degree in foreign affairs from UVA—Cooper sifted his experience through his vivid imagination and created Corps Justice, the first novel in the beloved Corps Justice series. Thus, a band of characters was born that would go on to enthrall readers throughout 17 novels and counting. With more than 2 million book downloads and multiple appearances in the Amazon Top 100, C. G. Cooper remains one of the most successful USA TODAY and Amazon best-selling authors.
In 2020, he won the prestigious James Webb Award presented by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation for his novel Chain of Command.
In addition to bouncing around the country in search of the perfect vacation (turns out, it is anywhere with his family), Cooper has called Nashville home ever since his final Marine duty station. When not enjoying the laid-back lifestyle of Music City, he’s doing his best to add more novels to the growing list at cg-cooper.com.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2025Another great book in this series. Great plot with great characters. These books are hard to put down. Makes you want to read the entire 20+ book series...which I certainly will.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2014I will first start by saying the ratings are all 5's so I must be the only person who read the book and was rather bored. I have up until this book loved his work. I came in with Cal, his security company and his employees. There was more action which is what I like. I could relate to Cal with his major dislike of politicians. The book had unethical and crooked politicians and people with money who had the attitude of wanting to controlling the world. How is that different than what we have in office now? Its frustrating enough to hear how the politicians don't work for their constituents, rich people wanting more control and money, and the United States continuing to be hurt by their pathetic performance. I did a lot of skip reading and kept the storyline going. I have to say though that Mr. Cooper does expand his characters well and knows how to develop his plot. I would just like to see him go back to original characters. By the way, I thought Travis leaving the business was kind of a slap in Cal's face and thought Cal would be ticked with him for a while. Cal hates working as the CEO, he is the action guy. Would I read another of Mr. Coopers books on this series? Definitely! I have to because of "The Hammer's" last line telling Cal he needs to leave the company has me pacing around waiting to find out whats next. Hurry up Mr. Cooper I can't wait to get the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2018At the end of PRESIDENTIAL SHIFT, the President called Cal and told him to watch his press conference. He gave a speech, then promptly resigned, naming VP Brandon Zimmer as the new President — it was a move nobody expected. President Zimmer faces threats from home and abroad during his first weeks in office. Will he hold out or give in?
President Zimmer chooses an interesting Chief of Staff and picks an even more interesting Vice President (I am not sure I am happy with one of the career changes)... The SSI team works to "stop a plot to manipulate the stock market and the country's economy"...
The fifth book in the Corp Justice series is different as in there is less shoot 'em up action than in previous books, but that is not a bad thing. Much of the story took place in Washington DC; there were plenty of shifty politicians with grandiose ideas and greedy plans to become richer and more powerful. Then there are the patriots who will do whatever it takes to protect America and her people. There were plenty of twists and turns to keep things interesting. The biggest shock to me was the Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot ending! I cannot wait to get started on LETHAL MISCONDUCT!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2017What an excellent way to be reminded that those who run this country have damaged integrity. It is not too difficult to relate to the author's portrayal of the character of those in power of our country today. By what we read in the news and see on television, the revealing flawed personalities are an insult to what our country has always held in higher esteem. So, what I am saying is that as a citizen of America, this story had me cheering for the guys who fought the good fight to overcome the evil intent of the adversaries. The cliff is high and to fall from it will surely take its toll on those who choose the crooked path. I love the ex-marine characters banter as they go about the high-risk job of protecting their country and the president.
This is a fast moving, action packed thriller. The tense scenes really found me holding my breath while they played out, only to breathe a sigh of relief when it all came together and then moved on at an even faster pace. There are surprises and clever twists in the storyline. I liked this novel and would recommend it with great enthusiasm.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2024Interesting reading
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2014I've been hooked since reading the first in CG Cooper's impressive list of novels and stories.
This one is fascinating, as a relative newbie to national politics has risen faster than he might have, to become POTUS. Having had a father who betrayed his oath of office, and having been appointed to VP, he now finds himself embroiled in intrigue and politics, as unusual.
While I'd love to believe that what happens in Washington is not nearly as convoluted as this novel, I hate to admit that it probably is much worse than it appears to us on the outside.
Cooper is masterful at character development and plot development, and shows he keeps on growing as he continues writing.
As others have written in reviews, I'm not sure I like Travis' new position and his leaving the group behind. I'm also not convinced that The Hammer is where she's supposed to be.
And having Cal become CEO and now spending his time running the place is almost too much. I hope that Cooper does one of his now-famous plot twists and things go back to a more, shall we say comfortable place for Cal and the team.
Just keep them coming, Mr. Cooper, and we will keep on reading! Thanks for an incredible ride!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2023This is the first book I have reviewed before finishing. The author totally lacks in knowledge of basic USA civics. Presidents have no control over senators. They cannot fire them. Presidents have no say in senators resignations. Only the voters can fire them. Presidents cannot promote someone to the vice presidency. They can nominate someone but that person has to be confirmed by both the Senate and House. That the author got these facts creates significant plot problems; besides being very annoying. I hope the author has since learned better and hope he does basic research into important things he writes about.
I am grateful he warned about his use of foul language. It was more than I care for but not horribly so. Why he thinks using foul language is "mature" is a puzzle. First-graders can and do use foul language. Using foul language on a regular basis just makes you sound trashy.
Regardless, it is mostly entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent
I have read all the books in this series, good characters and a balance between their relationships in the personal and professional capacity, I like the pace of the storyline, although a series of books they could also be read and enjoyed independently of each other.
Some of the story lines get a little far fetched but after all it is a story and an absorbing read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good thriller
Interesting read with many sub plots and power politics. However, no details about finding out stock manipulation - we are as clueless as Neil and Jonas. Though SSI has excellent rapport with the President, unlimited access to him and first name relationship seems little hard to believe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading
I'm thoroughly enjoying the Corps Justice series, have read them from the beginning. Whilst they are standalone stories, if you read them out of sequence I would suggest you would miss out on some of the character build ups. All the stories I have read so far are difficult to put down once you start. The author has a happy knack of putting you right in the picture (close your eyes and you can almost picture the characters, terrain and scene from his descriptions). I know it might seem one dimensional to be reading a series from the one author. But I am having difficulty getting to other books on my kindle, I'm always looking for the next Corps Justice book.

This was a very interesting book to read. Kept my interest from the first to the last page. I have just bought the next book ! Everything I could ask for in a thriller.
