Never Go Back: An Evan Buckley Crime Thriller (Evan Buckley Thrillers Book 18) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 275 ratings

When the heir to a billion-dollar business empire goes missing in the medieval city of Cambridge in England, it soon becomes clear to PI Evan Buckley that the secretive family who hired him to find Barrett Bradlee haven't told him the whole truth. Far from it. Worse, Barrett’s problems didn’t start until he asked the wrong people the wrong questions about his own family.

As Evan tracks Barrett from the narrow cobbled streets of the city to the windswept watery expanses of the East Anglian fens, one question refuses to go unanswered - what lies behind Barrett's obsession with the US Air Force base at Lakenheath, the heart of the CIA's covert operations in England at the height of the Cold War?

As the mystery unravels, Evan finds himself caught up in a violent showdown that's been brewing for sixty years, a bitter feud between Barrett's family and that of a ruthless politician at the core of the British establishment, a powerful and desperate man with everything to lose who'll stop at nothing to prevent the dark secrets of his own family's past from coming to light.

This was one of the most compelling books that I have read in many years. Compelling from the standpoint of not wanting the book to end.
Tremendous character development, plot lines that kept you turning pages without regard to the lateness of the hours.
I am looking forward to reading the next installment as well as finding some other books and series from James Harper

I found the flow of this book more to my liking than a previosly read book by Harper. It was a great story taking us across the pond to England and delving into some Cold War history. A thoroughly enjoyable read. I look forward to Mr. Harper's next book.

I have read every one of the books in this series and I think this is the best one yet. I love the banter between the main characters and how they go about helping each other on the jobs that Evan gets and Kate helps with her police knowledge. I like that even though they do not always do things legally correct, they do the "right thing".

Enjoyed this Evan Buckley novel. Please keep them coming. This novel had the banter between Kate and Evan at its best. I enjoy the humorous aspect to this and all the Evan Buckley novels.

The fact that Evan had his girlfriend the cop go with him to England to investigate. All of the excitement kept me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out where was Barrett.

This book starts out with a much slower pace than most of the author’s books as he developed the characters and background, but things pick up later, especially in Part II with a couple of twists.

Another one where the teaser sets the expectations - 'Heaven hath no rage like love to hatred turn'd.' In this one, we wind up in Cambridge, England where the beer is served warm. We fans know how Evan feels about warm beer. He and Kate will have to work fast, solve this one, and head back to the Jerusalem Tavern and ice cold beer. The back-and-forth between Evan and Kate is classic and I loved the English visits - especially the trip to participate in the British annual fete to honor the American dead from WWII. This was a very good read. I am pleased to recommend James Harper to friends and family. He keeps the light on - and that's a good thing.

Never Go Back, by author James Harper, is filled with murder, crimes from the past, and revelations you don't expect.
In this story Evan and Kate go on a job/vacation together in merry old England. Evan is to find out who killed a billionaire's grandson, the last of the family's line, and very much loved by his grandfather. They not only think they find the killer, but find out the grandson was married and expecting a child.
A few months later, Evan is approached to go to England again, and what he finds out is surprising. No need to say more, just read the book, you won't be sorry.

4.0 out of 5 stars All Evan Buckley books are good
Reviewed in India on March 9, 2023
The plots of all the Evan Buckley books are good and this one is no exception. But the repartee between Evan and his girlfriend Kate Guillory is starting to get stale, since it is repeated in every book. Instead of all that talking, drinking at the Jerusalem Tavern/other pubs, and the mild jealousy that Kate keeps displaying, (even though she doesn't make a commitment to Evan in any of the books so far beyond sleeping with him now and then), in that case I wish the author just added in some raunchy sex scenes! It would perk up the chemistry between these two characters. Otherwise, their non-stop couple talk drags away attention from the case they are solving, unless they are discussing the case itself. Such a bore!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Adventure with our Loveable PI
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 13, 2022
James Harper does it again. This time Evan heads to England and Guillory goes along for the ride. They are on the case of a dead billionaire's grandson. Once again Harper is at his best, taking us on a long convoluted journey with our favourite private detective. It's a complex journey full of humour, twists and turns. You think you have it worked out and then it takes another turn sometimes a blind alley, sometimes another lead. Loved it. I have had the privilege of being on this journey from the start and every book has been a great read. With anticipation for the next adventure.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and I voluntarily leave this honest review.

If you haven’t read this series, and you love reading a Great Thriller, I suggest you start reading these. This one was superbly done as they all have been. It kept me not wanting to put it down from the very beginning right through to the very end, of which was the best ending of any book I have read. Totally surprised at the twists of the last few chapters. Excellent 5 Star Series.

A different location (UK) this time around but the same edge of the seat read as the reast of the series has been. The characters continue to develop and grow in depth. A real page turner that had me wanting to get to the end so as to discover the outcome whilst wanting to slow down the progress so as to be able to keep on reading this great series. Can't wait for the next one to be published. Highly recommended read.
