Sophie Rostopchina, the Comtesse de Ségur, was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1799. She wrote her first novel at the age of 58, and continued to write novels and stories for children and young people. Her most well-known novel,
Les Malheurs de Sophie (Sophie’s Misfortunes) is about a young French girl who lives with her parents in a castle in the French countryside. The Comtesse died on February 9, 1874 in Paris.

This illustrated collection includes the short stories
Histoire de Blondine, de Bonne-Biche et de Beau-Minon (The Story of Blondine, Bonne-Biche, and Beau-Minon), Le Bon Petit Henri (Good Little Henry), Histoire de la Princesse Rosette (The Princess Rosette), La Petite Souris Grise (The Little Grey Mouse), and Ourson. The illustrations were done by Virginia Frances Sterrett for a 1920 American edition.

This bilingual edition is designed to assist those learning French. The English text appears on the left-hand pages of the book, with the corresponding French on the right-hand pages.

Must be fluent in French to read. Not a children’s book.

4.0 out of 5 stars not bad
Reviewed in Canada on June 6, 2014
while I do like the book - for beginner students trying to learn french it is a bit misleading since it is not an exact translation word for word. There are a few french words that have been omitted/or completely changed when going into the english version.

For example on the first page there is this sentence: a rire, a jouer, a teter et a domir paisiblement, The english translation says: to laugh, to play and to sleep peacefully. I had to google what teter meant. Again the french version said: qui rende heureuse ma pauvre Blondine. The english version said: who will make my sweet Blondine happy. Pauvre means poor from what I can tell. This is just the first page.. so it is not an exact version word for word.

But parts are easy to read for a lower intermediate french person which I liked. I havent gotten too far. But for the most part the translation seems decent and the story is enjoyable. Im docking a star because its not a word for word translation from what I can tell - meaning that I still have to google translate things and have ??? moments.
