Shadow Caster (The Nightwatch Academy Book 1) Kindle Edition
Murdering humans is a huge no-no and comes with an off-with-your-head sentence. Doesn’t matter if you don’t remember doing the crime.
I killed a human, and no, it wasn’t on purpose, but that shit doesn’t matter to the council. I’m facing death. So, when I’m offered a deal to avoid execution, I’d be a fool not to take it, even if it means leaving the human world and urban life behind to enroll in the Nightwatch Academy – a gothic monstrosity hidden from human eyes, located way too close to the largest tear in the fabric of our reality.
It would be fun if I had any inclination of becoming a member of the Watch or supporting the shadow knights at keeping the Formorian threat at bay. But heck, the monsters beyond the mist aren’t my problem. I have personal demons to deal with.
Once I’m out, the Watch can shove it.
But one sip from the ceremonial goblet and my plans to coast are out of the window as my powers spark to life.
I’m an anomaly, one the Watch won’t be letting walk any time soon.
My only comfort is a man who prides himself on his ability to harness pain. Battle scarred and formidable, he’s my tutor, my mentor, and the object of some super saucy dreams. He’s completely off limits and my only hope of surviving my first test.
I’ll need to harness my powers fast.
There can be no distractions.
But when my fellow cadets start going missing then returning with no memory of who they used to be and my best friend is taken, turning a blind eye is no longer an option.
Allies are limited when you’re a freak. Luckily, I don’t need a cheer squad to get shit done. Whoever is responsible better watch out. I’m coming for them, and I’ll be bringing the pain.
The Vampire Academy meets Game of Thrones in this kick-ass, supernatural academy, Urban Fantasy romance with no choosing required.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2021Refreshing take on classic paranormal lore. The World building was great, author did a great job painting different pictures and exploring how things worked. I find that this is an area that falls short in a lot of different books in the genre. Where you see an author has a great idea but doesn't quite know how to tie it together with the right imagery so the reader can appropriately imagine the space or world they are creating. I'm happy to report that this was beautifully done here. Another positive is the character development you see throughout the book. I love the journey the MC goes on with self discovery and finding power in vulnerability at times. Finding the balance between tough and bad ass with a soft underbelly can be hard to create and I appreciated the way the MC was brought to life and then the noticeable growth by the end of the book. That leads to my other exciting news! NO CLIFFHANGER, at least not in the irritating "I stopped in the middle of the story so you have to buy the next book" way some other authors do. This is a complete story with an incomplete overarching storyline so there is much unresolved at the end but also, you do feel a sense of closure if you choose not to continue. I, myself, am HOOKED! Nothing is quite as fulfilling as a likable MC, solid world building and imagery, and developed characters with relatable quirks and character flaws that allow for character building throughout the book. My one main note for those of you craving romance, this is a SLOOOOOW burn romance. There's some steam in there and I have hope it will continue to develop throughout the series because, it's noticeably developing but if you're looking for something hot, heavy and fast paced this is not going to hit the spot.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2021It is not often that you see vampires, Werewolves and Faery getting along. I like the story. It is original and interesting. However, going along with the hierarchy does not soot the Protagonist. I expected rebellion at being forced to do what was illegal in her mind. I would read more from this author. Good job.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2019I was a bit wary at first since it seems like the trend now are academy type books. Once I started however, I could not stop reading and finished in one setting. I found Indigo to be a refreshing heroine who is strong and self assured even though her life has been manipulated by outside forces. I found the relationships with her fellow cadets to be intriguing in their development. I especially liked the character of Brady and can’t wait for his backstory. Archer was also interesting although irritating at times and I hope there will be some change in the next book.
I’m hooked. I can’t wait for the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2019This book was a great hidden find. If you are look for anything with action, adventure, mystery and or a slow burn, why choose, paranormal romance this is the book for you. This story follows 19 year old justice and her journey not just becoming part of the night watch, but figuring out who she really is and life in general. This is a unique take on the paranormal where most of the traditional names like vampire or shifter have been swapped out for new names that still make sense; along with some other small variations all are up to a recognizable but unique paranormal story. There is plenty of action around every corner in a variety of ways. I loved justices back story and how she is who she is and coming to realize she's both a fighter and a lover. I'm still trying to figure out who all could be a part of the why choose, reverse harem romance but that smart of the slow burn and tension that will make the fruition of it all the sweeter. I enjoyed the troop, they were funny and not and there's definitely possibilities there. There's also a few tutors who are not and I'd love to learn more about. Each character and this world in general is well developed and feels like you could just step into this story. So while this first book ended on a happy-ish for now ending there's still plenty left that justice has to work out & that the knight watch needs to as well. I can't wait to see were this author takes these stories, and what will be discovered in the next book (which hopefully is available sooner rather than later lol). Great book would absolutely recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2021At first I wasn’t clear on what was going on. I don’t understand why Indie’s parents treat her like they do. I mean we get the reason why but I don’t get why it’s such a huge issue for them.
I think there’s more to Indie than meets the eye and I think her being a shadow or whatever will enable her to do more.
In this we see some potential love interests, but nothing more than a stolen kiss here or there happens. Though there’s tons of attraction thrown around.
Something I dislike of this author’s writing and this is my fourth series of theirs, is how they use the word monolith in legit every single book, as well as going to sleep and the next scene being not the next morning but some other time. Sometimes I want to see how awkward the morning was or there are some interactions I want with characters to be seen.
I’m definitely interested but this isn’t my favorite yet. It was pretty slow going to start and I had trouble focusing on this one. Still I kept going and it got better. I’m curious if their enemy is actually their enemy.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2024I wanted to give this a good go, but 23% of the way through, not a whole lot was happening. There was no chemistry between characters, there was no love interest, there was just her getting sent to an academy and failing an exam. That’s not enough to hold me as a reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Academy Book
There are a lot of Academy books around at the moment. Some good, some not so good, but this one is excellent.
Indigo Justice is a nightblood (vampire) woman on a mission. She’s trying to escape the expectations of parents who do not love her. So she’s fighting in the supernatural pits and working in a bar and generally avoiding coming home.
Her father decides enough is enough and arranges for her to join the Nightwatch Academy, where supernaturals learn how to police themselves and where the Shadow Knights train to fight against the Fomorians, to protect the supernatural world and humanity.
Indigo hates being forced into the Nightwatch Academy and doesn’t really apply herself. Her classmates resent her and her attitude and she isn’t particularly popular. Then it is discovered that she has the gene that makes her into a Shadow Knight, and she become the first woman to ever receive the training.
This book is exceptionally plot heavy. Everything moves at a mile a minute and it is wonderful. As well as the plot there is a good deal of focus on the relationships between Indigo and the other members of her team as she trains to become a Shadow Knight. It’s a slow change of attitude towards her as the team works together, which I really like.
There is a love interest but it’s very low key and sexy “but we can’t!” conversations. The romance is a very small part of this book, which is more about team work and friendships.
There is lots more to come with this series, and I can’t wait to get stuck into the next book.

This week I read the first book in the Nightwatcher Academy series for the second time and thought the book was as fantastic as the first time that I read it.
This book, along with the subsequent books in the series are stories that you will find yourself happily reading again and again.
For me, the characters are ones that I’ll want to visit again and again.
I love the world building, the characters and unforgettable storyline of this series and would ecstatically read any books set in this world again and again.
A Great, Addictive Read from one of my new favourite authors.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun new fantasy world
I enjoyed this book, the new fantasy world that the author created is great, its edgy & sexy with a dose of kindness and heart. I like the main character, the kickass heroine, who can really kickass. There are some great secondary characters, interesting new fantasy races/Creatures and a great story that i am looking forward to reading the next part of

A little cliched in places but still a good read that was entertaining. I will definitely read the next even though teenage angst isn't really my thing.
