On a Midnight Clear Kindle Edition
He’s penniless, up to his eyeballs in debt, and about to lose his estate. Therefore, it’s hardly surprising that when a local property developer offers a lot of money to buy King’s Wood from him, Barnaby is very tempted. But his father had always impressed on him that the green wood was sacred and must be protected at all costs, so he finds himself saying no.
He knows this will result in the loss of his home, but duty comes before everything. However, that fateful decision leads instead to a magical Christmas for Barnaby, complete with an old god who grants him a favour, and a beautiful statue that comes to life.
Cosmo is perfect for him. He’s funny and kind and completely enraptured with Barnaby, and for the first time in his life, Barnaby falls in love. But how can this lead to anything but heartache, when on the last stroke of midnight on Christmas Eve, Cosmo will go back to being a statue and take Barnaby’s heart with him?
From bestselling author Lily Morton comes a truly magical romantic comedy.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2025A Christmas Carol is one of my favorite books and On a Midnight Clear can sit proudly next to it on the shelf. I felt totally embraced by the characters because I totally embraced them. Bravo!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2025A beautiful read about desperation and new found love that will last a lifetime. Happiness abounds with Cosmo’s help. Enjoyable to the point I didn’t want the book to end but oh what a lovely ending!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2022My only issue with this book is that there isn't a sequel, I want to know more about the Holly King and Oak King.
As for Cosmo & Barnaby, this story is sweet and endearing. I expect I'll be talking to statues more often now. Maybe I'll get lucky and Atlas will agree to a coffee date.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2024I’ve been in a funk lately and I wanted to read a story that would lift my spirits. This book will cheer you up — as long as you allow reality to disappear for awhile. It’s about magic, dreams, and a happily ever-after.

On a Midnight Clear is a sweet, funny, and sexy read. The premise is exciting and new, and I was pulled in from the first page to the last.
This world, lightly touched by magic, is set at Christmas time, but it doesn’t feel like a Christmas story, but more of a story that occurs around that specific holiday.
The characters are lovely and personable, and I liked their interactions and the humor the author writes so well.
As with any book containing magic, I had to suspend certain beliefs to enjoy it. There are a couple of instances where I had to stop and consider what I was reading, but mostly, I just went with the flow and allowed the story to wrap itself around me. So, yes, I enjoyed this book. I wish there could be more in this world.
I look forward to more from this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2023I enjoyed this book. I loved Barnaby and Cosmo's tale. Barnaby sure needed this magic in his life. Having went from well off to almost in poverty, Barnaby has still stayed the same in his heart. All his life he has been fond of all the sculptors in and around his home, but there was always one he was drawn... Cosmo. He was the one piece that Barnaby bore his soul. Little did he know the statues hear everything and Cosmo listened intently. What a bit of Christmas magic is given to Cosmo from The Holly King, wheels are set in motion to change Barnaby's life for the better... But there is a cost. I was so pleased that this turned out an HEA. Good holiday reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2022On a Midnight Clear is a sweet and lovely little read, or listen, for the holiday season. It was exactly what I needed for a good and easy distraction while engaging in the miscellaneous tedious tasks I had to get done for Christmas. And you can always depend on Lily Morton for wonderful, steamy stories to entertain you any time of the year. You can also always depend on Narrator Joel Leslie to deliver an amazing, heartfelt performance with anything he reads, and he does not disappoint on this book. These two (Morton and Leslie) make a truly awesome team!

5.0 out of 5 stars A dose of warmth to brighten a cold winter night
Lily Morgan has written a modern fairy tale with a fey magical creature brought to life with magic.
Barnaby is a lonely middle-aged man desperately holding on to what's left of his heritage with poverty tearing at the fabric of his life. Cosmo is one of the many statues in a dilapidated old English house that were a lonely Barnaby's only friends as a child. One dark night, when everything seemed it couldn't be more depressing, Cosmo is brought to life for only 5 days...and changes everything.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whimsical and sweet
I am a HUGE fan of Lily Morton and love everything she has written. This book is very different from her previous books and it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but at a time when the world can seem to be a scary and sometimes unfriendly place, the gentle whimsy of this story was just gorgeous. And who hasn’t wondered what the statues get up to when we’re not looking?? Oh and - just the right amount of steam, too!! I loved it and it will be on my re-read list for sure. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful story
This book is full of the old magic that lies within all of us if we stop long enough to feel it.
It tells how, when we are at our lowest point of there is always good and love. I enjoyed this book so much that, having read it in KU, I now intend to buy it to keep as I'm sure I will read it over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sehr süß!
