Once Bitten: An Evan Buckley Crime Thriller (Evan Buckley Thrillers Book 17) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 373 ratings

When PI Evan Buckley’s mentor, Elwood Crow, asks a simple favor of him – to review a twenty-year-old autopsy report – there’s only one thing Evan can be sure of: simple is the one thing it won’t be. As he heads off to Cape Ann on the Massachusetts coast Evan soon finds himself on the trail of a female serial killer, and the more he digs, the more two questions align themselves. Why has the connection not been made before? And is Crow’s interest in finding the truth or in saving his own skin?

It’s a difficult line Evan is forced to walk when the answers he finds threaten to drive a wedge between himself and Detective Kate Guillory as he struggles with his conscience and she with her duty, a grievous criminal act from their shared past only making things more difficult still, demanding compromise of them both.

And as the case draws to a close and Evan unravels twenty years’ of duplicity and obfuscation, one simple mistake leads to unforeseen and disastrous consequences while at the same time teaching him a painful lesson too late – that even those you trust the most will let you down.

Crow asks Evan to do a simple favor for him. It also involves help from Kate. Evan gets the autopsy report from Kate and gives Crow his opinion.
Now Evan starts on the trail of three old murders and maybe more to come. This story has more twists and turns in it, devious deceptions and murder.
If you like Evan Buckley stories, by author, James Harper, than this one is for you. If your not an Evan Buckley fan, you will be after reading this story.

Love all the Evan Buckley books I’ve read so far, giving them 5 stars. This particular book was good, but not quite great. Maybe too many convoluted characters? I also felt that Evan wasn’t as witty in his dealings with his detective girlfriend Kate. The plot was interesting but confusing at times.

If you're looking for a Kate and Evan story you won't find much here. But you will find twists and turns of character and plot that will keep you up to date on what's going on in their lives. Until the next time. Keep it going.

This book started off quite different from what I'm use to but I liked the twist and turns. I was guessing the whole time about who was the killer. This one is one of my favorite.

Always enjoy Evan Buckley at work! It’s bumbling and sometimes crazy but always a good story and the good guy always wins!

Evan Buckley is asked to review an autopsy report of 20 years ago. Was this the first crime of a serial killer who attacks men who abuse women? Evan follows a trail that leads to a town on Cape Ann, Mass. and a suspect judge and police dept. He's equally helped and hindered by friends and foes alike, until he finds the solution to the crimes. Or does he?
There's a convoluted plot, lots of suspects, lots of snappy dialogue, some interesting characters. The book is well written and may make more sense if you have read any of the previous novels in the series. This was my first Evan Buckley adventure and it will probably be my last.
I received an advance reader's copy and this is solely my opinion.

This one starts so simply you have a hard time following the twisty, turny, convoluted tale as it progresses but follow it you must, or it will drive you mad. Crow asks of Evan a simple favor, checking the autopsy report of a crime 20 years old. Maham, of course, follows. This is another one of James Harper's mind benders I had to continue reading way into the night. It might be worth it - will know, after my nap. Do already know that I will have to download #18, Never Go Back.

This story has Evan following up on something requested by Crow. He has been asked to read the autopsy report on a case that happened 20 years earlier. In order for Evan to be able to read it, he will need help from Kate. Kate agrees and requests the case file. Once Evan has read it, he notifies Crow and is then provided additional information regarding the case that Crow had a part in back then. Meanwhile, Kate is called to meet with the Deputy Chief who has been informed about her requesting this case. He wants to know why she wanted it.

Evan while talking with Crow has seen photos that are not part of the case file Kate got. In addition, Evan learned that Crow received a newspaper clipping which is the reason for his request. Evan learns that the clipping has a similarity to the 20 year old case and he wants to make sure that he didn’t let a killer walk. In order to learn more, Evan takes a trip to Rockport and starts looking into the story that raised the concern with Crow. In Evan’s search he learned that the story had been pulled by the editor and the writer had been let go. It seems that there is another party that didn’t want it to come out. In addition, the Chief of Police in Gloucester had learned of Evan’s interest and wanted to meet with him.
Evan eventually was able to meet with the writer who did the story and learned of another case that happened. This case concerned a jane doe and had not been solved. Evan eventually was able to talk to another reporter who involved with the case of jane doe. Evan soon was able to make a connection between the three cases. Evan was able to come up with a suspect who did the killings. The last part of the story will explain all of the events leading up to a final meet.
To learn who the killer was and what was revealed at the scene that tied all the cases together, then you need to read this book.

I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

A lot of twists and turns but you can follow it whilst trying to work out who is the killer. Highly recommend the book however read all the others first. I love the humour reminds me of the humour in the military and all emergency services, a way of getting through arduous situations, makes them easier easier to handle and keeps you sane, characters are great, keep them coming.

Having read the entire series I found this a refreshing change of pace and style. While keeping the familiar characters in character, the storyliine integrates some new with the old.
Harper builds on immediate mystery and maintains suspense to the finish.
I truly enjoyed reading this book!
