Captain Luta Paixon of the far trader Tane Ikai needs to know why she looks like a woman in her thirties–even though she’s actually eighty-four. She isn’t the only one desperate for that information.

The explanation might lie with her geneticist mother, who disappeared over sixty years ago, but even if her mother is still alive, it’s proving to be no small task to track her down in the vast, wormhole-ridden expanse of Nearspace. With the ruthless PrimeCorp bent on obtaining Luta’s DNA at any cost, her ninety-year-old husband asking for one last favor, and her estranged daughter locking horns with her at every turn, Luta’s search for answers will take her to the furthest reaches of space–and deep inside her own heart.

Sherry D. Ramsey uses the standard-issue space opera, subgenre “trader ship” elements here wisely. And the characters are developed nicely.

Luta is the captain of this well assorted band and she has one secret: she is in her eighties but she looks a half-century younger--younger than her husband, who’s in a nursing home on earth, and younger than her resentful daughter, who’s in early middle age.

Naturally there is an evil corporation who wants her secret. Naturally she won’t give it to them. The results make for a rollicking space opera that will likely keep you reading. Almost all the key characters here have secrets to reveal, and eventually they all do.

And while there’s not much here you haven't seen before, it’s well done; and the idea of using a human as a McGuffin is, I guess, kinda new. It’s the first of three, but there is a complete resolution here.

NOTES AND ASIDES: Ramsey cites this quote toward the end: " I don't believe in ageing. I believe in forever altering one's aspect to the sun." She doesn't mention the writer. It's Virginia Woolf.

In any story, the characters are crucial to me. If you can write characters with depth, that are internally consistent, I will probably keep reading your book. Sherry Ramsey delivers.

I don't write many reviews, but I felt like this book deserves one. Largely because I intend to purchase to next book in the series.

As another reviewer mentions, it's EXTREMELY refreshing to read a book with a solidly-established backstory, and a solidly-established central relationship. The main character is complex without being chaotic. The love and trust between the her and her husband is inspiring, without being saccharine.

Finally, the philosophical question. Every good story, imo, is about philosophy. This one asks an excellent question, and comes to a conclusion.

I can't explain my 4/5 stars without giving away plot points, but there is one recurring theme among the crew that I didn't like. I understand why it was necessary to the story, but I didn't like it.

Still will be purchasing the next one!

I had fairly low expectations for this. This is not one of my usual authors and and I didn’t pay much for it. I was very pleasantly surprised at what a good book it was. I don’t like books that tell the story from multiple points of view. This book followed Captan Luta throughout without side trips to other characters. It’s important that a book make me care about the characters and do so early on, this did that. I prefer not to get bogged down in a bunch of theoretical technical background. This book kept tech theory to a minimum . And a book must have a plot line that holds together and makes sense. Once again , this book came through. It had an enjoyable plot line with enough action to keep it interesting , but not so much that it turns into a Perils of Pauline type story. If you’re a fan of space opera stories I highly recommend this one.

I read this book because Sherry is a friend of a good friend and I was absolutely happy for her to have a book published, even though I do not know her personally.

I loved the world setting in the book, I loved the characters, the story was entertaining. However, somehow it did miss something for me. I cannot really pinpoint what that was, though. In a way I feel like it needed a bit more Firefly or Farscape so to say.

As I said, and as other reviewers have said: characters and world are totally engaging. It is a stand alone book and I still would really love to see more of this world and the crew of the Tane Ikai. To become a beloved series or a page turner I think it just needs to be 20% more awesome.

I rarely buy books before they've accumulated enough in-depth reviews that I can pretty reliably pre-judge what they'll be like, but I'm very glad a sale price led me to read a blurb for this book. The interesting premise was enough to make me try the sample, and that was enough to prove she knew how to write a plot and protagonist that draw you right in. To make a long story short, I bought it, read it nearly in one gulp, and really enjoyed it, so I came back here to help build her online "rep". Considering the massive number of books I've read (many being SF/F) and the just-a-handful of reviews I've posted, I don't bother very often. It's not quite polished/deep enough to merit the rare 5-star rating, but it's well worth the read.

I've gotten kind of sick of every other character in current fantasy being an immortal supernatural creature of some sort, generally w/species politics and stereotypes that are getting all too familiar, but here we have a likable "ordinary" woman captaining the idiosyncratic crew of a merchant merchant space vessel (occasionally on the grey side of the law), with just one big difference: she hasn't aged for about the past 50 years!

The book is as much a touching and ultimately hopeful exploration about how that has twisted and shaped her family, as it is a fun space opera of their attempts to elude the ruthless quasi-governmental corporation that wants her secret. The dynamics between Luta Paixon, her elderly husband, their resentful daughter who looks older than she does, and the driving enigma of her scientist mother (vanished into hiding when Luta was a child) who may still be alive and hold all the answers, make this work feel fresh and original.

Oh, there's one more point in its favor: a completed, satisfying resolution, NOT a cliffhanger!

4.0 out of 5 stars That was fun! Good space opera and storyline, interesting characters and no cliff-hanger ending

I don't consider it a spoiler to acknowledge there is only one minor space battle. After all this is about the captain of a trading ship. I liked that people of different species are treated in the story as just people. Corporate politics, family politics and longevity form much of the underlying theme. But most importantly, I enjoyed it!

    Lohnendes Lesefutter.
