The Outsiders Kindle Edition
They’ll do anything to protect their way of life. Anything.
Welcome to Priory, a small gated community in the UK, where the only thing worse than an ancient monster is the group worshipping it. They'll do anything to protect their secrets, especially with Charles Erich at the helm.
The question is, how much influence can a religious leader like Charles Erich truly have over his followers? If the time comes, would he ever allow them to leave? And is that which slithers below true evil, or does evil reside in the people of Priory?
Priory. A community of one mind and purpose. A place of order, commitment, peace, and service. A perfect world, building on mind shattering secrets from beyond the pale.
Enter...if you dare.
THE OUTSIDERS follows five shared-world stories by five authors, each one delving into the world of Lovecraftian cults, murder, indoctrination, and our quest to belong. If you dare follow this UK invasion of five prime authors as they each tell their own story of the people living behind Priory's steel gates and high walls, you'll quickly find yourself an outsider as well.
Featuring stories by Stephen Bacon, James Everington, Gary Fry, V.H. Leslie, and Rosanne Rabinowitz. Carrying on the tradition of H.P. Lovecraft.
Proudly brought to you by Crystal Lake Publishing – Tales from the Darkest Depths
Interview with one of the authors:
So what makes The Outsiders so special?
James Everington: Each of the stories in The Outsiders is set in or around the gated community of Priory. The shared world setting is something that seems very much more than the sum of its parts; each of the fantastic authors included inside contributes something new to the locale but also does something original within it. The different stories explore different notions of belonging, ‘Britishness’, race and xenophobia, and community. And they’re all damn scary to boot. It’s an anthology I’m very proud to have been included in.
Tell us more about your lead character.
James Everington: My story, ‘Impossible Colours’, has two: Michala is a mixed-race police officer investigating strange behaviour in Priory while not knowing how much she belongs in the police force or society as a whole. Not knowing how much society will let her belong. Meanwhile, the person she is investigating, a little-England racist, has his own thoughts and fears about belonging and about what might lurk inside Priory’s walls, into which he is desperate to gain entrance...
Why should readers give this shared-world anthology a try?
James Everington: Because the shared-world element, the British setting, and the sheer talent of the authors involved (plus me!) make The Outsiders a cut-above all the generic ‘Lovecraftian’ anthologies out there. It’s not just reusing the same hackneyed plots and monsters, its retooling them for the present day.

As the founder and CEO of Crystal Lake Entertainment, Joe has transformed a humble 2012 startup into a multifaceted Intellectual Property powerhouse. Under his visionary leadership, Crystal Lake Publishing has become just one of the many thriving divisions of his company.
With a track record of working with and publishing works by luminaries such as Neil Gaiman, Clive Barker, Stephen King, Charlaine Harris, Ramsey Campbell, John Connolly, Jack Ketchum, Jonathan Maberry, Christopher Golden, Graham Masterton, Damien Angelica Walters, Adam Nevill, Lisa Morton, Elizabeth Massie, Joe R. Lansdale, Edward Lee, Paul Tremblay, and Wes Craven, Joe is the quintessential mentor for aspiring horror authors. His deep industry insights and extensive network place him in a unique position to guide both new and seasoned writers in the genre.
Joe’s commitment to nurturing talent and fostering author careers is at the heart of Crystal Lake Entertainment’s ethos. His approach is not just about publishing books; it’s about building a community, sharing knowledge, and being a beacon of friendship and guidance in the often intimidating world of horror writing.
Since leaving his day job in 2016 to focus full-time on his passion, Joe has also excelled as a work-from-home dad, a role he embraced in 2018. His daughter, Cayleigh, named after his childhood influences Bruce Lee and Stan Lee, is a testament to his belief in the power of storytelling across all mediums. Joe’s love for great narratives extends beyond literature, encompassing comics, games, film, and television, with favorites ranging from Poe, Doyle, and Lovecraft to King, Connolly, and Gaiman.
Joe Mynhardt isn't just a figure in the horror industry—he's a driving force behind it, leading a successful online business that goes beyond the traditional boundaries of publishing. Discover more about Joe’s journey on Facebook or Patreon, where he continues to inspire and lead the next generation of horror storytellers.
Since its founding in August 2012, Crystal Lake Publishing has quickly become one of the world’s leading publishers of Dark Fiction and Horror books in print, eBook, and audio formats.
While we strive to present only the highest quality fiction and entertainment, we also endeavour to support authors along their writing journey. We offer our time and experience in non-fiction projects, as well as author mentoring and services, at competitive prices.
With several Bram Stoker Award wins and many other wins and nominations, Crystal Lake Publishing puts integrity, honor, and respect at the forefront of our publishing operations.
We strive for each book and outreach program we spearhead to not only entertain and touch or comment on issues that affect our readers, but also to strengthen and support the Dark Fiction field and its authors.
Not only do we find and publish authors we believe are destined for greatness, but we strive to work with men and woman who endeavour to be decent human beings who care more for others than themselves, while still being hard working, driven, and passionate artists and storytellers.
Crystal Lake Publishing is and will always be a beacon of what passion and dedication, combined with overwhelming teamwork and respect, can accomplish. We endeavour to know each and every one of our readers, while building personal relationships with our authors, reviewers, bloggers, podcasters, bookstores, and libraries.
We will be as trustworthy, forthright, and transparent as any business can be, while also keeping most of the headaches away from our authors, since it’s our job to solve the problems so they can stay in a creative mind. Which of course also means paying our authors.
We do not just publish books, we present to you worlds within your world, doors within your mind, from talented authors who sacrifice so much for a moment of your time.
There are some amazing small presses out there, and through collaboration and open forums we will continue to support other presses in the goal of helping authors and showing the world what quality small presses are capable of accomplishing. No one wins when a small press goes down, so we will always be there to support hardworking, legitimate presses and their authors. We don’t see Crystal Lake as the best press out there, but we will always strive to be the best, strive to be the most interactive and grateful, and even blessed press around. No matter what happens over time, we will also take our mission very seriously while appreciating where we are and enjoying the journey.
What do we offer our authors that they can’t do for themselves through self-publishing?
We are big supporters of self-publishing (especially hybrid publishing), if done with care, patience, and planning. However, not every author has the time or inclination to do market research, advertise, and set up book launch strategies. Although a lot of authors are successful in doing it all, strong small presses will always be there for the authors who just want to do what they do best: write.
What we offer is experience, industry knowledge, contacts and trust built up over years. And due to our strong brand and trusting fanbase, every Crystal Lake Publishing book comes with weight of respect. In time our fans begin to trust our judgment and will try a new author purely based on our support of said author.
To date we’ve published around 100 books, and with each launch we strive to fine-tune our approach, learn from our mistakes, and increase our reach. We continue to assure our authors that we’re here for them and that we’ll carry the weight of the launch and dealing with third parties while they focus on their strengths—be it writing, interviews, blogs, signings, etc.
We also offer several mentoring packages to authors that include knowledge and skills they can use in both traditional and self-publishing endeavours.
We look forward to launching many new careers.
This is what we believe in. What we stand for. This will be our legacy.

"The triumph of Everington’s first novel is that, while hinting at lofty literary precedents, it cumulatively takes on an unsettling voice all of its own." The Guardian review of The Quarantined City
Whenever I have to write an author bio for anthology or something, I send them something like this:
James Everington mainly writes dark, supernatural fiction, although he occasionally takes a break and writes dark, non-supernatural fiction. His second collection of such tales, Falling Over, is out now from Infinity Plus.
He’s also the author of The Quarantined City, an episodic novel mixing Borgesian strangeness with supernatural horror—“an unsettling voice all of its own” The Guardian—the novellas Paupers’ Graves and The Shelter, and the mini-collection Trying To Be So Quiet & Other Hauntings. Alongside Dan Howarth, he has co-edited the anthologies The Hyde Hotel, Pareidolia (Black Shuck Books) and the BFS Award nominated Imposter Syndrome (Dark Minds Press).
Oh, and he drinks Guinness, if anyone's asking.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseInteresting anthology about a cult of squid worshipers. Each story is written by a different author, giving different twists on the subject. All the stories fit nicely together.
All are well written. I liked this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAll separate--all interconnected--all born from Priory...
I'm not a huge fan of Lovecraftian-style fiction but I was curious about how a handful of different authors would handle writing a short story stemming from a single theme. Each story was unique and well written, and could be enjoyed as a single unit as well as a part of the whole. My two favorites were: "Precious Things" by V.H. Leslie, and "Stolen from the Sea" by Stephen Bacon--each one chilling enough to send shivers up my spine.
I would definitely consider re-reading this book in the future!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseCreepy and scary, but I knew where it was going most of the time. The Outsiders features a truly scary cult/religious community in the middle of a typical suburban world. The other-worldly hover and slinks beneath the surface. At one point I had to race ahead because it was so fraught I could not take it. Yes! I really raced ahead!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe idea sounded great, but the actual realization is rather unexciting ..not really sure what this collection is trying to say in its bland way ...
- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe thing I enjoyed most about this book was the cohesion between the authors. The writing was very good, though the story was rather fantastical. The characters were, for the most part, kind of creepy. Even the more "normal" among them seemed off to me. I couldn't give this five stars because the premise was just a bit too unbelievable. Although it is a good question: what do we really know about that realm and those creatures that live in it?
All in all,a thoroughly enjoyable read.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2015Format: KindleIt’s no easy task to be able to twine stories together to create a cohesive tale. Told by 5 very different authors, you’ll find yourself being mesmerized as each story winds through the streets of Priory like tentacles reaching out attached to a common core. Each is its own entity, but together they make a whole. As the title states this is a story of outsiders, those who don’t fit in for one reason or another. Come in; take a peek of the going-ons in this tight-knit little community. Start your visit with Kevin Lucia’s forward; here he will introduce you to the community.
Gary Fry opens with The Subprime, here we meet Lee a young up and coming lad in the mortgage business. Lee has a problem though, he has a conscience. Feeling he no longer fits in with the company’s policies he is ready to call it quits. But, Mr. Philips, his boss has other plans. He invites Lee to dinner at his home in Priory, where Lee finds out the terrible truth of what happens to those who resist conformity.
In Impossible Colours by James Everington we read of Michala, a woman of mixed ethnicity. Working as a community officer in the town of Exham it’s hard fitting in when surrounded by a sea of white faces, but she manages. Shortly after a confrontation with the town racist, he is found dead in Priory; suicide they say. Michala isn’t buying it; there is something unsettling about Priory and the people within.
Ryan and his wife are active members in the community of Priory. Ryan solicits donations and recruits new members for the compound. His wife works for the church and closely with Erich the founder of their church. All was fine until the day their son died. Stephen Bacon’s Stolen from the Sea is a story of loss. How sometimes with grief one can tend to disconnect and no longer find solace in what was.
Aah, Precious Things. What was once held dear can turn into fear. V.H. Leslie offers an interesting tale of alienation. Petra and Bernard thought they found the ideal community in which to retire. Bernard was a mineralogist and the setting of Priory offered a perfect location for the pair to stay active together with Bernard’s passion for precious stones. But alas, that wasn’t to be. Bernard has become secretive in his dealings with Erich, the community leader and has taken to locking Petra out of his study. Then comes the day when she must enter the study, and what she finds inside defies her worst fears.
Wrapping up the telling of the tale is Rosanne Rabinowitz with Meat, Motion and Light. Claudia grew up in Priory, being the only black family in the community was hard. Enduring relentless teasing from classmates as a child, Claudia is finally making a life outside of Priory’s walls while attending university. Then one day she gets a call from her mother, she is summoned back to Priory. All those old fears come back to the surface, what will she face this time?
And so we end our time in Priory with an afterword by Joe Mynhardt, the editor and publisher of this fine read. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I have!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2015Format: KindleFrom the Description:
Inside Priory awaits a lot more than meets the eye. The people might seem friendly, but only because their enigmatic leader Charles Erich doesn't give them much of a choice.
The cottages inside this gated community seem simple enough, and even though what lurks beneath them is more ancient than mankind itself, can anything be more evil than the people worshipping it?
If you dare follow this UK invasion of five prime authors as they each tell their own story of the people living behind Priory's steel gates and high walls, you'll quickly find yourself an outsider, as well.
I received an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review. This is in no way reflected in my opinion of this book.
The outsiders is a collection of tales centered around The Priory. A gated community that has a secret,,, The people there worship one of the Old Gods. As a fan of the Cthulhu mythos and Lovecraftian horror, I couldn't wait to read these stories! The stories you'll find here are filled with a sense of creeping dread and claustrophobic paranoia that grabs you and won't let go. All of the stories here are good but two of them really stood out for me. The first was Precious Things, where a woman learns that her true worth is priceless. The second was Meat, Motion, And Light, which gives us a glimpse into the mating rituals of an Old One. Both really great stories! Now,,, Ignore that slithering sound coming from the pipes and curl up with this 4 star read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gave me my fix of short stories
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFor about a year I have read every new anthology Crystal Lake has published, however, having not read any of the early publications, I thought I would rectify this by reading The Outsiders. 5 authors writing about The Priory, a secluded estate set in the UK and home to a Lovecraftian cult and run by Charles Erich.
Opening with an introduction from Kevin Lucia, which sets the scene and gets you in the mood to sit and enjoy these 5 stories.
The Subprime by Gary Fry: Finance is a cut throat industry, but Lee at the age of 19 was doing well except for one thing he had a conscious. Mr Philips, his boss hopes to persuade him not to leave by inviting him to a dinner party at his home in the Priory. This is our first meeting with the folk at the Priory and whilst the author at the start made them seem pretty normal as the story continued you could sense they were itching for a kill.
Impossible Colours by James Everington: Michala Bruce is a community officer patrolling Exham and takes an interest in the Priory after Marty Young kills himself. The story describes the effects of the cult, strange flashing colours and the residents being more in a trance. Telling part of the story through Marty’s journal enabled the reader to see both sides of the story and you are left wandering what happened to Michala.
Stolen from the Sea by Stephen Bacon: Ryan was the salesman for the Priory, getting donations for the cause and persuading to join them. A chance meeting with Natalie starts out as friendship, but when Ryan’s son tragically dies their friendship turns into so much more. Written with sensitivity this story looks at grief and religion and regardless of the religion, people will question their faith at times of sorrow.
Precious Things by VH Leslie: Petra and Bernard both retired, moved into the Priory. Married for a long time Petra was used to Bernard’s eccentricity and his love of rocks kept him busy for ages. But when he started locking himself in his study for a long period of time and having secret meetings with Charles Erich, she became worried. This story built up to a dramatic ending and showcased the power of love that Petra had for her husband
Meat, Motion and Light by Rosanne Rabinowitz: Claudia was away at University when her mom asked her to return to the Priory. Reluctant to give up her freedom, she went home to find out what was going on. Following Claudia’s story, you get an understanding that her childhood was not fun. More was written about the creature and the effects it had on the residents. With references to characters and incidents from the previous stories this was the perfect story to finish this anthology.
This was a quick read and whilst it is horror, it wasn’t usually from the creature that lived under the grounds. These stories showed the good and bad of human nature and the effects of the cult on everyone who encountered them. A good read which enable me to get my fix of short stories

5.0 out of 5 stars Dare you enter The Priory
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA deliciously dark and creepy set of tales. Each story is stand alone, but have some common threads. All set around the gated community 'The Priory'. If you are looking for stories with romance, humour and happy endings then lokn elsewhere. If you like horror and intrigue then this is what you will find.
These tales that stay with you, long after you have read them.
Great stuff!
