On Board (Painted Bay Book 2) Kindle Edition
Leroy Madden is in trouble. Big, handsome, Fox Carmody trouble.
Leroy has buried his attraction to the enigmatic fisherman in irritation and pointless bickering, keeping Fox at a safe distance. But with the troublesome man now living in Leroy’s house, it’s becoming impossible for Leroy to keep his true feelings hidden, or the fact that Leroy maybe isn’t so straight, after all.
Leroy hungers for something different between them. He wants more. But Leroy’s business is struggling, his newly mended relationship with his brother is at risk, Fox doesn’t plan to stay, and their mothers are lovers.
Regardless of what Leroy’s heart so desperately wants, his entire world is at stake, and nothing about a relationship with Fox Carmody was ever going to be easy.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2021On Board is the second stand alone in the Painted Bay series by Jay Hogan. The story of tow fisherman who form the outside are opposites, but both yearn for the same things.
We met Leroy in the first book of the series, On Point, as he's the brother to its main character. However in that book he is frustrating and leaves a lot to be desired, so much so that I was wondering if Jay Hogan could actually make me care for him. But not only did she make me care about Leroy, every grumpy soft misunderstood part of him, she made me so fiercely protective of him that it changed my feelings towards other characters I previously loved. I mean I still really liked them but back off of my boy Leroy Please and Thank You...sorry I kind of spiraled there lol but as you can tell I absolutely loved Leroy and I loved Fox just as much. Fox was the perfect sun to Leroy's dark moods. They balanced each other out really well and after a short time of being in each other's orbit could read each other's moods and be supportive.
On Board is packed with so much emotion, I'll admit it brought me to tears twice. From Leroy as he struggles to feel allowed to accept his bisexuality, avoid his intense connection to Fox and feel worthy of loving him. From Fox as he heals from his messy divorce, his bond with his dog, and with learning to trust his judgment when it comes to Leroy. On top of all that they have an explosive sexual chemistry and the intimate scenes are hot, intense, and copious.
On Board by Jay Hogan is a well written, emotional, and beautiful mm romance. Filled with forced proximity, self discovery, fresh starts, a lovable pup, fisherman duties, wonderful communication and passion. I can't wait for more stories from the small town of Painted Bay
- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2024Jay Hogan has a great set of characters for this book. Leroy Madden is a sullen 30-year-old muscle farmer in the waters off Painted Bay, New Zealand. Leroy's mom Cora who owns the house and business Leroy lives in and works invited her girlfriend Margaret's son Fox Carmody to stay in the house with Leroy. Fox is coming from Stewart Island, New Zealand where he had a fishing business until his husband Van cheated on him and made him sell his business in the divorce settlement. Fox's emotions are at a low point despite his sunny disposition. Leroy's emotions range from grumpy to hostile. Complicating Leroy's family situation is his brother Judah who has a chip on his shoulder for how Leroy allowed him to be bullied in high school. Returning from his honeymoon with Morgan, Leroy finds himself struggling with the business, with his brother, adjusting to his mother's lesbian relationship and now having a man he dislikes intensely invited to live with him. Over the course of the novel, Leroy realizes that he is bisexual and attracted to Fox who he does not like.
This sets up what was for me the weakness in Hogan's narrative. Leroy goes on and on with his internal rap agonizing over his emotional climate throughout the book. It gets plain tedious. He has low self-esteem and doubts Fox's part in their relationship over and over. It gets plain tedious. On the bright side, Hogan does create interesting conflicts and the men battle a cyclone to save the muscle harvest. Fox's dog Mack is a wagging tale of affection for everybody. Leroy's crew of Patrick and Kane have their own issues but are distinct characters. Overall, this is a good book, although I wish Hogan would have concentrated more on story than endless psychobabble. Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2025Finally...Leroy! Jay Hogan peels back the curtain on this grumpy man. Leroy is complicated with walls a mile high. He has had a particular bee in his bonnet for more than a year now. It's in the form of a beautiful six foot three inch sexy as sin Southerner. Fox. He's suddenly everywhere. And he really loves to poke the bear...the bear being the grumbling, sexy six foot mussel farmer, Leroy. Their forced proximity courtesy of Leroy's meddling mother. Now these books about Painted Bay should be read in order cause of the detailed nature of these complex but extremely vivid characters. I so recommend these funny, snarky unbelievably beautiful books!!!😘

- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2024Excellent story filled with love and discoveries about themselves and each h other. Leroy believes he is straight maybe with a few stray thoughts now and then that maybe he isn't as straight as he thinks. Fox shows up and everything he has believed goes up in smoke. Can all the problems that goes with this be solved? Love can find a way.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2022Jay Hogan is really good at mixing the angst with her romance. And there's something about having a dog involved that just turns me to mush. Another great romance from one of my favourite m/m authors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another amazing hit!
Jay has done it yet again. Beautiful setting, deeply emotional REAL characters, just the right amount of angst, and steamy scenes to keep to sated until the next one. It is the sequel to Off Balance, so I'd highly recommend reading that amazing story first.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brining out the best in people
Ima not going to do the blurb, it’s there for you to read.
What I like about this author is how Jay just makes characters come to life. They could be your friends or family or you wished they were your family!
Fox is an astute person whose character is golden. He does such a good job of helping Leroy find himself.
Leroy has so many inner battles and it is a reality that you could relate to work, life, family, sibling stressors. How we balance or don’t balance our lives or realise there is another person who could help us.
So this book starts a bit slow but the story needs this to be creditable and to develop the main characters.
Yes I cried, but it isn’t a big angst but enough to get you. The romance and steam is wonderful. This book sucks you in, you feel part of it and their lives. Wanting to be there with them.
So again Jay Hogan you are a brilliant writer who has just made me all mushy from reading the story of Leroy and Fox, could’ve read them for another 20 chapters of their life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book 2 of an amazing trilogy
This is book 2 in a trilogy of male/male romances by Jay Hogan. Book 1 is Off Balance and tells the story of Judah Madden who achieved international stardom as a ballet dancer and was forced to give it all up and return to Painted Bay in New Zealand where the series is set. I recommend reading them in order, although they can be read as stand-alone as well. Book 3 In Step is about Kane Martin who badly abused Judah at school and is now living in his car with no job, no money, estranged from his family with a secret and a life he's deeply ashamed of. Another amazing story. This book is about his brother Leroy who is struggling with his fishing business and his relationship with Judah. He also has a long-standing secret crush on Fox Carmody and is horrified to unexpectedly find Fox in his kitchen. Ah Leroy is a dark horse and keeps his cards very close to his chest cue all kinds of interesting developments when Fox turns up and Leroy begins to slowly unravel.
All of the characters are well-written and chockful of secrets and I found the entire trilogy unputdownable. Jay Hogan is now one of my go-to authors for male/male romances and she powerfully evokes a great sense of place in Painted Bay. You can literally smell the sea and I fell in love with the place and the guys that live and work there. I highly recommend all of the books, especially if you have not had the pleasure of reading Jay before. Do not hesitate to give them a go, you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome.
Complicate can't describe Leroy's life, he needed someone desperately, someone to teach him how worthy of a wonderful life he is.
After being badly burnt Fox doesn't need another complication but life happens and Leroy could help him to start over and learn to trust again.
Wonderful read, slow burn, hot, funny, and really heartwarming.

Gary gives this story, in my opinion, just the right emotions at the right time. He brings an already good book yo just that other level above that. 🎧 5*
Book:
These men are dealing with their own ideas, prejudices and problems in regards to relations and who you love. They do gind theie hfn/hea in a way that works for both of them.
I also like that we revisit many of the characters from book one. And for me Judah needs to grow up a bit but he seems to be working on it .
