    The second book in the Racing Hearts in Serenity series is as good as the first—maybe better, as hard as that is to believe! AJ Ryan is a hotshot NASCAR driver on the team headed by Davey Johnson, the hero of the first book, Nora’s Promise. Nora’s best friend, Ella Fisher, is a currently unemployed image consultant—and, boy, does AJ need one! AJ’s record and their instant attraction almost make Ella refuse the job, but she gets a hint of the good inside AJ and decides to take a chance.

    Ella already volunteers at a children’s center and arranges for AJ to do a photo op helping out there. She’s surprised to find he’s a natural with kids. Thanks to his camaraderie with a young boy, they learn that he and his sisters have been alone for several days with no idea where their mother is and they’ve run out of food and money. Ella volunteers to take the kids home with her for the weekend, and before she knows it, she and AJ are “pretending” to be a couple and fostering the kids.

    Two people who are attracted to one another and bonded by their common goal of helping three kids—yeah, this makes for a really good love story! What’s impressed me most with this series is the author’s ability to not only bring lots of sexual tension (and follow-through) into the story but also the way she shows two people falling deeply in love and the way she draws attention to social issues that exist in the real world. The Perfect Lap (just like Nora’s Promise) is hard to put down, and my own heart was racing as I cheered AJ and Ella on, both in their relationship and in what they’re trying to do to make their world a better place.

    And the best part of all—there’s gonna be a third book!

Ella is a PR rep and after a nasty break up, is on a man-ban, when she’s asked to take on AJ as a client to help him get his career and reputation back on track. It took me a while to warm to AJ, but he grows and changes throughout the book, revealing the sweet, sexy hero hidden beneath. The two of them are thrown in at the deep end, when they form a fake relationship so they can foster 3 children while their mother is (wrongly) put in jail. AJ and Ella go through many ups and downs, but in the end, they’re finally honest with each other in a realistic love story. A great small-town romance with an imaginative story line. Eventually, the children who began to be a problem, with A.J. and Ella's help gradually began to behave themselves.
    Ella, after two bad romances, was determined never to let herself get involved with another man---she didn't foresee what was going to happen in the future with A.J.
    I won't put any spoilers. All I will tell you is: this is a great romance mixed with how to bring up children and how things can be misinterpreted, in a relationship.

    When bad-boy AJ meets Ella, who has been burned before by her choices in men, I was expecting the characters to be hollow, the story to be predictable—boy meets girl, girl resists boy’s bad-boy charm at first but later is drawn to him, with break-ups and make-ups along the way. But I was surprised that Sedona Hutton’s contemporary romance, The Perfect Lap, has much more depth than that. The main characters are strong, each flawed while following their own arc of redemption. The emotions, running high, tug at the reader’s heartstrings.
    I particularly liked the social conscience in the book—the single-parent storyline; Ella and AJ team up to help three children whose single mother, Clare, is struggling to get back on her feet. When Clare tells her kids that it’s okay for them to love Ella, and that loving Ella and AJ doesn’t take any love away from her, I enjoyed the surprising twist.
    I enjoyed the book, period.
