"The first in an unmissable series, Priest of Bones is a fresh and compelling take on grimdark fantasy. Mashing together soldiers, gangsters, magic and war into a heady mix that is a hulking big brother to The Lies of Locke Lamora."--Anna Stephens, author of Godblind

The war is over, and army priest Tomas Piety heads home with Sergeant Bloody Anne at his side. But things have changed while he was away: his crime empire has been stolen and the people of Ellinburg--his people--have run out of food and hope and places to hide. Tomas sets out to reclaim what was his with help from Anne, his brother, Jochan, and his new gang: the Pious Men. But when he finds himself dragged into a web of political intrigue once again, everything gets more complicated.

As the Pious Men fight shadowy foreign infiltrators in the back-street taverns, brothels, and gambling dens of Tomas's old life, it becomes clear:

The war is only just beginning.

Praise for Priest of Bones

“A charismatic and very more-ish book with solid prose and a strong voice.
Priest of Bones is a story of organised crime with shades of The Godfather. It sounds grim and dark...and it is...but our priest of bones is quite the humanitarian for a ruthless crime lord. With high tempo action it's just very fun to read.”—Mark Lawrence, author Red Sister

“I can safely say that this will be the book dark fantasy and grimdark fans will be raving about at the end of this year...[McLean] has presented a brilliant debut grimdark outing that is fascinating, gripping and has everything that I look for in a crime-focused novel.”—Fantasy Book Review

“McLean’s writing is punchy and fast-paced...Anyone itching to read a high-stakes story should pick up this delightful combination of medieval fantasy and crime drama.”—
Publishers Weekly

“A pitch-perfect blend of fantasy and organized-crime sagas like Puzo’s
The Godfather or Pileggi’s Wiseguy, this novel….is very, very hard to put down. Expect word of mouth support from fantasy fans to turn this one into a genre hit.”—Booklist

Priest of Bones is sure to be among the favorite reads for grimdark fantasy fans this year.”—Grimdark Magazine

“An enjoyable read for lovers of small-scale fantasy, with a diverse cast of crooks. Priest of Bones can be effectively summarised as 'gangsters in fantasyville.' McLean manages to combine two of my most liked elements in fantasy – a quick moving plot, and characters with realistic relationships. Fans of Daniel Polansky’s Low Town books, Mark Lawrence's
Prince of Thorns or dare I say Blackwing will find a number of similar themes put forward and I feel that’s the readership who will most appreciate this book.”—Ed McDonald, author of Blackwing

Priest of Bones is a fresh and compelling take on grimdark fantasy and has done something I haven’t before seen in the genre. Mashing together soldiers, gangsters, magic and war into a heady mix that is a hulking big brother to The Lies of Locke Lamora, this is the first in an unmissable series.”—Anna Stephens, author of Godblind

Priest of Bones is a fast paced fantasy filled with magic and combat, but with the intrigue and strategy of a crime thriller. McLean writes soldiers and their experience of returning from war like someone who has been there. There is excellent character development throughout; I'd follow the Piety brothers through any story.”—Michael Mammay, author of Planetside

“Managing to be exciting, narratively taut, and a commentary on the terrible things war and violence do to people is no mean feat, but Peter McLean manages it with Priest of Bones. I wish I had written this."—RJ Barker, author ofBlood of Assassins

“Absolutely sensational...The prose is smooth and easy to follow, and that combined with a flowing story, an even pace and a rising tempo, result in one of those books that you could easily read in one go. All in all, Priest of Bones is Low Fantasy at its finest, and I wouldn't hesitate to call it the Fantasy Debut of the Year.”—Booknest

“If violence and planning, honor among thieves and treachery among lawmen, blood and profanity and spies and explosions are your thing, Priest of Bones is the book for you. Get it. Read it. Wait impatiently for the sequel.”—J.C. Nelson, author of The Reburialist

An absolute beast of a book
What a bloody whirlwind read this has been!! This is the first book this year I’ve picked up and finished within 24 hours. I could not put it down. It’s gangster fantasy, and if such a thing doesn’t exist, well it does now. Tomas Piety, formerly head of the organised crime outfit known as The Pious Boys, has returned from the war into which he and every other man of fighting age was conscripted, to find his streets empty and dangerous, his businesses under new management and his Aunt taking refuge in a nunnery for which she is clearly ill-suited. For Thomas the name of the game is simple. Get his businesses back, keep his men in line and onside, deal with his scarred brother who has his own gang and return the small town he once dominated to the kingdom he always saw it as. His morality is established quite early in the book when he kills one of his men who is about to force himself on a woman. Whether he is killed for the attempted act or twice questioning the order not to act is one of the questions that lingered in my mind when trying to figure out where Tomas sits on the scale of good and evil. Tomas demands respect and rules his men by drawing a very clear line in the sand and dishing out harsh consequences for those that step over it. He is very much like a mafia godfather, collecting taxes for protection, suffering no fools and focusing on maintaining control of himself and his interests at all time. At the same time his entire existence is ruled and regulated by the women around him. Bloody Anne is his best friend, most loyal solider and his second in charge, his Aunt Enaid is the matriarch of the family and the alluring Ailsa who seems to be more intelligent, skilled and cunning than all of them put together. I loved this element of the story and it was made very clear that this confident and powerful man would not be either of those things without the women beside him. There is a large cast of heavies and hired goons, some of which receive lots of characterisation and some of them are simply red shirts, being held back in the story so that the home side can suffer some losses at the appropriate moment. I liked the way Mclean did a list of these characters at the start but not so much that he used actual lines from later in the book to describe them. It left me feeling like he was repeating himself at times when he really wasn’t. It’s a small gripe and one that was more obvious to me because I read the book so quickly that there was literally no need to go over any piece of information a second time. Overall this was an absolute beast of a book. I loved it and so cannot help but highly recommend it. I will be getting the sequel Priest of Lies when it is released on July 2nd. 10/10

"Those were the times we lived in."

Tomas Piety - soldier, priest, crime boss - returns home after three long years at war, only to find all of his once-thriving businesses stripped from him by an unknown foe. With his brother and fellow soldiers at his back, he means to take back what is rightfully his, no matter the cost. But there's more to this battle than meets the eye and the future of the whole of Ellinberg rests in Tomas' hands. With powerful and influential allies working from the shadows, he must make the hard decisions that will not only keep his men alive, but also ensure the well-being of those he has sworn to protect. This is the beginning of the War for the Rose Throne.

What can I say other than I absolutely LOVED this book. Priest of Bones is definitely one of the most entertaining and intriguing books I've read in a long while, and I wish it never had to end. Right from start I was completely engulfed in a story of the bonds of brotherhood, whether through blood or tried and tested by the horrors of warfare. It's a tale of holding fast to your ideals and staying true to your word, even when it may not be completely beneficial to your own needs. It's about loyalty, faith, and fighting for what's yours, all while making due with the hand you've been dealt. And it is one hell of a story of harsh justice.

Priest of Bones recounts the events of the Pious Men reclaiming their streets through the eyes of Tomas Piety in such an awesome, immersive way, ripe with street slang and colloquialisms that make this feel as though it's a story told and not a story read. Honestly, it's really all the tiny insights that add up that make this book pretty damn amazing. A firsthand account of the effects of battleshock, and how it can push people to feel and act a certain way. The uncertainty faced when the mind and heart battle for supremacy, being forced to choose what's needed rather than what's wanted. The violence, often quite severe, conveyed in such a cool, apathetic way that only a seasoned crime boss or former soldier could ever exude. Tomas faces some serious and dangerous obstacles, yet I can't recall one moment where the tone shifts to one of panic. Everything is executed in just the perfect way, keeping the pages turning, and making it hugely difficult to put the book down.

"Sometimes a leader has to keep things to himself and make the hard decisions alone."

The cast of characters McLean has crafted is so beautifully diverse, each complex with their public facades masking their inner demons, rich and tragic histories, and mysterious backgrounds. Each serves a purpose, and none go to waste. I found it pretty impressive that I actually grew to care for many of the large number of players in the game, especially when most can be considered secondary or auxiliary characters. In addition to Jochan, Tomas' unhinged younger brother, Bloody Anne, his trusted second-in-command, and Ailsa, barmaid and fancy lady, there are so many others that add a rich depth to the story - Fat Luka, Cutter, and Billy the Boy being amongst some of my favorites. I feel the removal of even one of these characters would be noticed, and if I'm being honest, I'm a bit afraid for their futures. The enigmatic baddie keeps Tomas and the gang on their toes, and I'm excited to see what happens when they finally clash.

The majority of this book takes place in the city of Ellinberg, a moderately industrious city now decimated by plague and poverty. Each of its districts is aptly named for its redeeming qualities and controlled by a certain group of people. The Stink, seat of Tomas and his Pious Men, named for its lovely smell. The Wheels, home to Ma Aditi and The Gutcutters, a rival crime gang, and named for its dominating water wheels. Trader's Row, pretty self-explanatory and somewhat of a common neutral ground. We find ourselves exploring the majority of the city in the dark of night as Tomas plots and executes his many plans. Sometimes I feel as though stories set in one city can get a bit cramped and confined, but I didn't feel that way at all with our misadventures through Ellinberg.

I can talk about this book all day, but I'll leave the rest for you to discover yourself. There are secrets and treachery around every corner, and the only way to truly experience it all is to have Tomas tell you himself. Priest of Bones is a gritty read that tackles some pretty dark themes, never pulling any punches, and skillfully uses them to explain and accent the story at hand. It's refreshing to see these heinous aspects being exposed for a purpose and not just because. I went into this book a bit blindly, as I've yet to read anything by Peter McLean, but my expectations have greatly exceeded to say the least, and I don't think I can truly convey how excited I am to jump back in with Priest of Lies. If you're looking for something dark with some splashes of sarcastic humor and some pretty intense action, this is what you're looking for. I highly recommend.

"... when people have run out of food, and hope, and places to hide, do not be surprised if they have also run out of mercy."

This is one of my first Grimdark series! It's out of my comfort zone but I was pleasantly surprised.

The darker themes were difficult to digest, but any violence that took place served a purpose to better define character motivations. The MC, Thomas Piety, is not your typical protagonist. He is cold and violent, but he follows a strict (if misguided) moral code, and I grew to respect him, if not like him.

Overall, this was not one of my favorite reads due to the violence and lack of likeable characters. There is no one that I was rooting for, which made it difficult to stay invested the whole time.

Unlike with my previous reviews, this ain’t the author’s first rodeo, so no need to pull punches, though there aren’t many. Peter McLean has a brilliant ability to make the reader feel something for the characters, love or hate them. And I hate Tomas Piety.

Priest of Bones is a first-person low fantasy set in a world of vaguely Renaissance-level technology, opening at the end of a brutal war with a company of soldiers making their way home and looting their own country all the way. Tomas Piety was an organized crime boss before the war and aims to be again, using his soldiers to reform the gang and retake his old territory. But he soon finds himself unwillingly mixed up in grander plots involving not just rival gangs but deadly spies, sorcerers and political intrigue that he’d never had any interest in.

Like all gangsters, Tomas Piety is a complete hypocrite. He pretends he’s better than others and just a legitimate businessman, right up until the blood starts flowing. It’s basically a graft of Peaky Blinders into a fantasy setting. I’m not complaining, it’s clearly successful, but the characters are so similar I found myself visualizing Cillian Murphy more often than I’d admit. There are a few tedious nods to conventional sexual morality, but I guess that’s what you need to appeal to a mass audience. Instances of white-knighting abound, but I guess most people won’t have a problem with it. On the other hand, this gangster has no problem with massive numbers of innocent people dying just as long as he doesn’t know them. This seems to be true of mafiosi whether they’re named Corleone, Soprano or Shelby. As the Pious Men gang reclaim their old businesses from rivals, I wondered how many ordinary customers of those businesses they slaughtered in the process. The authors of those earlier efforts knew their characters’ rationalizations were bullshit, and it remains to be seen whether McLean does, which is why I’ll probably read the next volumes in his saga.

One thing I really appreciated about this book was that it’s clearly low fantasy. Magic doesn’t appear at all until almost a third of the way through the book, and then only slightly but increasingly. I like this type of world where magic is more of a dangerous nuisance than anything else, since it lends the world more realism. McLean’s worldbuilding is superb, and I can almost really smell the stink of a district called literally The Stink. I have no idea of McLean grew up in a situation like this, but just the fact that I wonder it says a lot.

I also liked the exquisite plot construction. Peter says that he’s a boring plotter rather than a pantser, but it really pays off here. This book is a master class in pacing, and the action (meaning things happening that advance the plot) never lets up. In many ways it resembles the stepwise progression you see in video games with a building plotline. Tomas starts off small reclaiming his gang’s home base, then slowly builds up his territory with bigger and bigger targets. Some might find this method familiar and tropey, but it gives a sense of building momentum and purpose, bigger and bigger until the final boss fight, as it were. It works for this type of story.

One technical criticism I have is that there are several instances of phrases being repeated multiple times, almost word for word, both in dialogue and exposition. I don’t know if this is intentional or if he just forgot he already used that line but in some places it’s just telling me something I clearly already know. Not sure if this is an editing issue but it was a bit annoying.

As I said, I don’t like Tomas Piety, but I will continue to read his story if only to see if he gets his comeuppance. Of course he won’t cause that’s not how grimdark works, but whatever. Peter McLean’s ability to make me interested in characters I hate is the mark of a masterful storyteller, and I look forward to the nest volume in his series, Priest of Lies. I tore through most of this book in a day, and that’s just about the best compliment I can give.

This was a nice little read. Fun an simple pretty much explains this book. There's no hidden question marks, no meddling gods or dieties ,just a man coming back from war to regain the businesses that was taken from him. Of course he's not a business man but a thug with a questionable moral compass. Definitely worth a read.

Priest of Bones is the first installment in Peter McLean's War of The Rose Throne series. Priest of Bones is a low fantasy book that follows Tomas Piety, a crime boss, priest and now a veteran who is returning from the war to find his criminal empire in the hands of others. Tomas must rebuild the Pious Men to retake what is rightfully his, and he will stop at nothing to retake it all!

This series has been described as the fantasy version of The Peaky Blinders TV program. That's what initially drew me in and I could see the similarities between the two but I found that quite early on, Priest of Bones took on a life of its own and became its own masterpiece. McLean has created something that just completely blew me away with the quality of this book. I usually take it a book at a time with a new series but I couldn't help myself with buying the rest of the books in E-Copy and signed editions. That's when you know you've discovered a new favourite author and series.

The characters were by far my favourite part of Priest of Bones. The story is told from the POV of Tomas Piety as he takes back his criminal empire that he left behind before going off to war. Tomas is everything you want from a main character. He's calm, cool and collected but certainly not someone to cross at all and too many have found out the hard way. I usually find it harder to get into a book when it's from the POV of just one character but in this case  McLean executes it perfectly and the book just flowed beautifully.

There is an abundance of other characters that we get to meet that keeps the reader entertained throughout. Whether it's the Pious Men or their enemies, each character was fleshed out and had their own unique personalities. I really enjoyed getting to know each character and I took a special liking to Bloody Anne, Jochan, Billy The Boy and even Cutter whose past I'm dying to know about. I loved that theres some uncertainty as to whether the new Pious Men recruits will stay loyal to Tomas or maybe they're an informant for a rival gang or even out for themselves. I always had the feeling that I never knew who anyone really was or what their goals were. I guess you can't go go far wrong when your philosophy is "The right man for the right job".

The world-building was also brilliant in my opinion. Its not a gigantic map where we're crossing kingdoms yet once we're back in Ellinburg, McLean makes the city seem huge and the detail was truly incredible. I always had the feeling of being in a gloomy and grey setting which complimented the plot and the characters perfectly. Im excited to see more of Ellinburg and even Dannsburg in the next couple of books.

The plot to Priest of Bones is one that kept me entertained from start to finish. McLean's writing style flows in a way that was easy to follow and a pleasure to read. I'm usually a pretty slow reader but I devoured this book. Priest of Bones had the perfect balance of humour, fight scenes and a fascinating magic system that was captivating yet not overpowering. It was the perfect touch to a low fantasy book. On top of this, the political intrigue keeps you on your toes and constantly guessing as to what is going to happen next, especially where the queen's men are involved.

Priest of Bones is a solid start to a series that deserves to be mentioned every time fantasy books are recommended. If you're an avid fantasy reader or someone who is curious about the genre, this is an absolute must read!

If I could, then I would dropkick myself for putting it off and not reading this book when it was recommended to me by so many people.

Love the way it is written, even if at first it was a bit annoying, the quirks, the author toned it down, and it flow very well! I cannot wait for 5he next books, either this one or the burned man series!

One of the best in the grimdark genre that I've read. Will definitely be reading the rest of the series. Fast paced, visceral and violent but very well written with great characters. Some dark humor as well. A page turner that I highly recommend.
