4.5 out of 5 stars 1,005 ratings

A sexy alien living incognito on Earth meets a sci-fi loving nerd who wants to rock his universe. What could possibly go wrong? Besides the unexpected tentacles and the accidental Mating Courtship Ritual, that is....

RIVER SULLIVAN

As a bona fide sci-fi nerd and total X-phile—the truth is out there—I’ve always believed in aliens. Duh. But I never thought I’d actually find them on Earth–let alone right here in Las Vegas! Now I’ve stumbled onto a big freakin’ secret and found my very own hot AF alien. I’m head over heels, but he’s being a total grump and holding back. How do I make him realize a geeky sunshine guy like me is just what he needs in his life? Did I mention he also has tentacles?!?! #HolyHentaiFantasyBatman #SwoonworthyAlien #SignMeUpSugar #MakeItSo #VivaLasVegas

KAI GENARO

The last thing I need in my life is a chatterbox twink who’s determined to woo me and could expose the secret existence of aliens on Earth to all humankind. Everything about him annoys me, including his stupidly attractive halo of golden curls and his bright green ‘come hither’ eyes. To make matters worse, he’s been recruited to work for the alien Alliance on Earth, and I’m assigned to keep him out of trouble. I don’t care how attractive he is. I don’t date humans! Except, my tentacles may have accidentally started the Mating Courtship Ritual with him…

It’s Not Unusual To Be Loved by an Alien (Tentacular Tales #1) is a (102,000 words) M/M sci-fi rom com featuring an adorkable twink with unexpected secrets and a slight obsession with extraterrestrials, the reluctant alien he wants to make his boo, tentacles with a mind of their own, zany extraterrestrial shenanigans in Sin City, and enough humor to fill an entire spaceship. This is the first book in the series. There is no cheating, and this book ends with a HFN. Never fear, the series guarantees readers an HEA by the end!

River and Kai
I just absolutely loved this book and River and Kai's story so much. Debut author Chole Archer has really done it with this book full of song references, nerdy sci-fi references galore and a plot twist I only half saw coming. River and Kai have an HFN and the book ends on a cliffhanger. I am excited for the next book in this series.

River is a huge science fiction nerd. He also believes that aliens live amongst humans on Earth, and he's now convinced his new neighbor is one of them. When the neighbor drives off in the middle of the night, River and his uncle follow him out to the Nevada desert. What they find there will change River forever.

This book is a hilarious romp about extraterrestrials living and working alongside humans on Earth. The story is clearly inspired in large part by the movie “Men in Black,” which is definitely acknowledged. You will definitely need to be up to speed on all the popular science fiction movies and television shows to get all the references River makes.

It's impossible not to like River. He seems to have a boundless supply of snark. And questions. He always has lots of questions. Sometimes, they are even pertinent to the task he is tackling. Have of the story is from Riveer's point of view. It's clear early in the story that there's more to River than even he knows about. You'll probably have a good idea of the gist of what makes River different long before it's revealed near the end of the book.

Kai is the straight man (figuratively speaking) to River's hilarity. Half of the book is told from his point of view, so we get to know him quite well. Kai is just the right counterpoint to River's unbridled enthusiasm. He also has a family that provides a lot of additional color as well as foils for River.

This is the start of an ongoing series that is clearly meant to be read in order. While this first book introduces the main characters, it doesn't resolve all the plot lines that emerge. I'll definitely be reading the next book in the series soon.

This was and interesting book which I mostly enjoyed. I felt like it was much too long. There was so much happening all the time that there was no rest. As another reviewer pointed out, the writing reminded me so much of Alice Winters' books. Funny but a little over the top. I loved River and I hope the author does not increase his snark in the next book. The level is perfect as it is. I also loved Kai and enjoyed watching him "blossom" in his relationship with River. The peripheral characters were all enjoyable as well, especially Uncle Benji. I do wish the author would have indicated exactly how many more books will be in this series. I'm assuming at least three since book 2 indicates it's still an HFN. Not sure I'm up to sticking with it. I want to see Mal and Benji mesh though.

I've been on audible for years and really had a couple very good narrators that give life to the story. But the narrator with this book could easily be a full on voice actor! The story itself was freakin hilarious and really well-written. I am over 50 so the tropes hit a beautiful nostalgic bone as a long-term Trekkie and sci-fi fan; especially X-files. I had no reservations regarding this after reading prior reviews and they are all spot on.

I have to really emphasize that I would really like this book without voice narration but with it, it was just a pure delight and gave all the characters so much life. I could listen to this again; a rare thing for me.

I keep both audible and kindle subscriptions; it keeps credits lower for renting the books. My eyes are getting bad and I work long, overnight hours as a guard. As such, I go through a lot of books with voice. To get audible books are a treat for me anymore for the high cost per credit when listening so much. It was a nice surprise to have 10 hours for this credit and allows me to get all the books in the series. Some books are well written but charge for 4 or 5 hours and it's just not doable for me when I can easily spend over $60 a month on these credits for only a few books.

If you are someone in the same position, this one is worth the credits and reasonable with the cost. I couldn't recommend this more, honestly. I'll finish the series with this author, look up the voice actor to follow and check out her other releases. Highly recommend!

I have stayed away from any stories involving tentacles because I wasn't so sure I would enjoy it let alone understand it. I should have known better when it comes to Chloe's books.
I love the title of the book. I love the snarkiness of the twinks. I love all the nerdy sci-fi references. The constant rambling lines of word vomit, the timing and perfect delivery of said word vomit, all makes for a therapeutic-laugh-out-loud.
Greg's narration of this wonderful book made the story come alive with so many characters.
I absolutely 💯 loved this book so much, I have to listen to the entire series.
    Thank you Chloe and Greg.

I recommend this book for when you’re in the mood for something cute that’s gonna make you laugh a lot. The writing was okay, but I spent a lot of time skipping over large chunks of unnecessary information. It was like something would be said then there would be several sentences more explaining whatever was said. I’m sure some people are into that but for me I kept thinking I got it the first time can we move on now.

I debated between a 3 or 4 star review and I’m still not sure it deserves a 4 star, but for Greg Boudreaux’s spectacular narration.

This reminded me of Megan Maslow’s Starfig Investigations—so if you’re a fan, this might work for you.

The world building could have been stronger—I’ve lots of unanswered questions.

    In a nutshell:
Perky, nerdy and optimistic 23 year old.
    Serious, efficient and tentacled alien.
    On earth
    Aliens have secret bases
Someone is dealing drugs to visiting aliens
    Who??
    Fated mates?
    Karaoke
    Tentacle Tango
    HFN/HEA

For a debut novel, it was pretty good, but I couldn’t help but finding bits and pieces of other MM novels in this.

My rec? I enjoyed it if I didn’t think too much & yhe narration truly leveled up this story.

I am in awe... This is the funniest, entertaining, original and unique book I have read lately and it was an amazing surprise of this author new to me. I got hooked immediately in River's charm (as anyone inside and outside the book, I am sure) and, once I started reading the story, I just want to know what happens with him and Kai, so I couldn't stop until the very end. Of course it was not enough and I joined the newsletter, to get the free short story, and I made everything in my power to read the Christmas story and the book 2 as soon as possible. The story is addictive and captivating so I can't wait for more! So, so good!

What a wonderful debut from this author. River is such a chaotic yet adorable and funny sci-fi nerd with a quick witty response always on tap. The alien Kai is in desperate need of some fun in his life and when circumstances have him and River come together, Kai really doesn’t know what hit him!
Together they slow burn(ish) their way to steamy heated tentacle related moments including an hilarious tentacle dance that had me laughing out loud. The investigation was intriguing and I loved how River was able to show his intelligence and thinking outside the box.

A great fun read with many pop culture references, a wonderful cast of interesting side characters and an unexpected twist at the end.

The overall plot was interesting which is why I kept reading. However, I was able to skip over pages and pages of dialog without missing anything. This would have been better with one POV, particularly Kai's POV. River isn't the worst character, but his nonstop nonsense about everything 24/7 in conversation got old really fast. I basically figured out he had nothing to add to any conversation and wasn't the one moving the plot forward. I liked him when he wasn't constantly making reference to movies and characters. I know people like him exist in life, but it didn't translate well on paper. If it had only been Kai's POV, then seeing River go off as much as he did wouldn't have been so tedious. I loved Kai's POV. If you took away all the references River made in the book, his dialog would significantly decrease.

The story was interesting and it was enough to keep me interested in learning more about what happens. I did skip over the unimportant parts, even during the spicy scenes. I'm gonna check out book two to see if it improves. I still suggest giving this a go. Just be prepared for River to talk nonsense that adds nothing to any conversation or moves the plot forward. Kai acted perfectly as a romantic interest when it came to his confidence and teasing. The moments weren't allowed to breathe because of River, but Kai is a good character and I love his entire family and Benji. River is my main issue alongside some repetition with information. Overall, it was enjoyable, but not something I would reread.

5.0 out of 5 stars A surprising niche
Reviewed in Canada on October 10, 2022
A really great start to what is clearly a new series!

River has enjoys writing some very x-rated alien tentacle romance but he is just a normal human on normal Earth. That is until he and his uncle decide to follow their decidedly suspicious neighbour and find themselves in the Arizona desert at a clearly alien base. River is over the moon to find this out but humans aren't allowed to know about the aliens on Earth and his mind is wiped......but it doesn't take. River quickly finds himself wrapped up in the alien action along with his handler/giant crush Kai. River loves this turn on his life and is determined to make Kai see that it is okay to open his heart to a human and that with River in the know they could really have something.

While it seems this is going to be a clear cut story about River finding out about aliens and the journey from there, it quickly becomes clear there is more going on. River's inability to be hypnotized is odd but more and more unusual things start popping up and bigger mysteries come about that need more time to be solved. This is the lead in to the rest of the series and promises to be a great run!
