The Shackles That Hold Us: The Magi Accounts 2 Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 1,243 ratings

As if crushin’ on a shifter wasn’t bad enough, I had to go and date one.

A mage and a shifter walk into a bar… No, that’s the whole joke.

Magi and shifters don’t mix, and yet I find myself in a relationship with Cosmo, a lion shifter. And on top of that, Cosmo, and all his pride members, consider my brothers and me to be a part of their pride. Three magi in a shifter pride. Who would’ve ever thought?

Navigating our connection while trying to figure out what’s going on in the world isn’t easy. Trusting that Cosmo means forever when he says it? Even harder. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned since meeting the Ono-Nais, it’s that taking a risk with my heart will be worth it to be a part of their lives.

The Shackles That Hold Us is a 113K novel and the second book in the MM urban fantasy series, The Magi Accounts. It’s recommended to read the series in order because it has an ongoing storyline, but there is NO cliffhanger.

*Intended for adults only. Please read the trigger warnings at the beginning of this novel.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Michele is married to an awesome guy that puts up with her and all the burnt dinners she makes—hey, sometimes characters are a bit distracting, and who doesn’t plot when they’re supposed to be cooking? They live together in Baltimore, Maryland with two little monsters, a three-legged princess, a four-legged goofball, and a cutie with giant ears (aka their two kids, their two cats, and their dog). She hopes to rescue another cat soon, and if her hubby wouldn’t kill her, she’d get more than one… and maybe a few more dogs as well.

She loves creating worlds filled with lots of love, chosen family, and of course, magic, but she also likes making the characters fight for that happy ending. She hopes to one day write all the stories in her head—even if there are too many to count!

Loved it! A fantastic sequel that took me on another emotional rollercoaster ride! There were a lot of ups and downs but I loved how heartwarming and sweet the book was even when dealing with darker moments.

    I can’t wait for more!

This series is one of the best. The world, the story, the plot, the injustices and trifles, the friendships and romance. It melds to makes a masterful story. I don't cry often but this book made me cry on more than one occasion. You feel what the characters feel and it's truly moving.
This was a fantastic second book in the series and we got to see madeo and jude grow as people as they become part of the pride with cos and the shifters. The struggle they have, specifically madeo, is so genuine. Built from years of abuse. Which makes them opening up to other that much sweeter.
This book pins issues like slavery, the cruelty, bigotry and injustice of that mixed with a societal bias against a minority. Its gut wrenching and dark, as it should be. If you decide to give this series a try definitely read the trigger warnings but it's so worth the read for so many different reasons. Not just the story of madeo, jude, cos and their pride, but the world and issues that they face that draw parallels to our own society and how moved I've been seeing it from a different light through Michele Notaros world she had created.

I really enjoyed The Scars That Bind Us and A Kiss To Revive Me and was very much looking forward to this installment. It was OK. There was some character growth, especially for Madeo, the overarching plot moved forward, and we got a deeper look into the horrors of the society (do read the trigger warnings). I am still hooked on the series, want to see what happens next, and will definitely read the next companion novella, but I didn’t feel like this book was as strong as its predecessors.
That being said, I needed two tissues over the course of the book, so the feelings were strong!

In the beginning of the first book I was a little cautious, because the explanation for their world seemed a little rushed. If you keep reading past the first chapter though it slowly starts to pick up. The storyline is phenomenal! The way the plot and climax for book books seem to meld together keeps drawing me in, then I'm overwhelmed by the character development from both magi and shifters. The first book doesn't simply unload all the special little drama of their pasts, instead it slowly unravels through time and patience like REAL trauma tends to unwind. Usually it's only when your safe that you finally begin to process everything, and healing WITH my favorite characters in the book is such a special bond, and that connection is so hard to find on most Amazon Kindle books honestly. On Amazon I've come across more books about trauma, healing and love but I've always felt apart from it like an outsider. As I read this series I'm not just seeing what's happening, I'm LIVING it and authors that can give readers an experience like that is so hard to come by. I absolutely love this book and would recommend to anyone fascinated by the fantasy / fiction genre and willing to give it a try. I love reading about badass female protagonist so this is my first time reading behind the scenes of a male and I can say with no doubt that I was absolutely not disappointed.

As a loyal reader to Michelle Notaro, I'll say this. Thanks for the warning in the beginning of the book about certain moments.
THe emotional rollercoaster that is this book? MIchelle Notaro is evil to the point I laughed, cooed, cried, awed, growled and a plether of other emotions that course through me.
Madeo and Cosmos along with Jude, Logan and the pride grows as a team and a true pride that should blossom into a respectful well-oiled machine that keeps the story going through the Magi Count serie.

Madeo struggles with self-conscious, identity-crisis and dark past to get through with a bunch of PTSD triggers. In all honesty? Iwant to do some dark things to a certain someone who takes pleasure on hurting Madeo and Jude but alas.. this is just a story that just keeps tugging on my heartstrings. Sigh.
Cosmos continues to learn more truth about Magi world and how they are treated. and his eventual rise to power in politic.
Jude learning to trust more and more in his team.
Logan blossoming into a beautiful person that just shine rainbows.

Be warned, you will cry in this book but the ending is worth it in this installment. But this is not the end of the serie. so in a way, it's a bit of cliff-hanger to kee us reader salivating for the next part of the story. whether it's a full novel or small novella

Thank you Michelle Notaro for an amazing story and can't wait for the next one!

Can't help but be invested in this series.
    Great characters, ALL of them.
I also admire the author for ending a series, i love that she knows when a good series needs to end, however great the characters were.
I know I'll be visiting this world on and off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing world building in this series
Reviewed in Canada on June 10, 2022
This is a terrific book. The second book in this series by Michele Notaro continues the story of shifters and magic users in the alternate earth dreamed up by this author. For me the world building is definitely the best thing about this book. Ms. Notaro has come up with an amazing world of shifters and magic that also has a whole social structure, history and more. There are so many cross relationships between the characters that even though the focus is on Cosmo and Mads the book is more about family and what it means.
This series does need to be read in order as there is an all over story line and you should definitely read the trigger warnings because although Ms. Notaro treats them sensitively there is more difficult stuff that happens in this book. I can’t wait to read more books about these characters and their world.

Interesting world, enjoying the characters, romance, blood, gore, plot. Enjoyed it, although the soft, loving sweetness, is getting in the way a bit, but it's a nice found family which they deserve, so that's good too
