Death on Denial: M/M Paranormal Mystery (Quest Investigations Book 4) Kindle Edition
DOA becomes BRB when this client goes MIA…
When I agreed to accompany my selkie boyfriend on a private boat trip, I didn’t realize the invitation included a swim. In the Pacific. In November. Naked. And I certainly didn’t expect to have our swim derailed the instant I got in the water—holy crap, that’s c-c-cold—by a literal boatload of selkie clan leaders.
Climbing out of the water in front of them—did I mention naked? Yeah, way to make a brilliant first impression. Then things get worse: I get served. Not in the metaphorical sense, either. Nope, I’m being sued.
By Death.
Well, not Death precisely, but an Ankou—a Celtic psychopomp who escorts the departed to their final destinations. This guy is miffed that his workload has increased exponentially, which he blames on my actions in Sheol on an earlier case. I’m not about to take the heat when eons of shady demon shenanigans finally come home to roost, but here at Quest Investigations, we aid any and all supernatural folk in need—especially if they’ll drop their specious lawsuits against the agency’s lone human.
When the Ankou skips out on us, though, all hell breaks loose. Because without anyone to lead them on, the dearly departed become nearly departed and stick around to party hearty. Now it’s not just the selkie leaders complicating my love life—it’s the ex-living as well.
And when one of the ex-living decides not to remain ex? Things get really complicated, not to mention deadly.
Dammit.
Death on Denial is the fourth in the Quest Investigations M/M mystery series, a spinoff of E.J. Russell’s Mythmatched paranormal rom-com story world. It contains no on-page sex or violence, and although there is a romantic subplot, it is not a romance. The series is best read in order.

About the Author
E.J. Russell (she/her), author of the award-winning Mythmatched paranormal romance series, writes LGBTQ+ romance and mystery in a rainbow of flavors. Count on high snark, low angst, and happy endings.
Reality? Eh, not so much.
She's married to Curmudgeonly Husband, a man who cares even less about sports than she does. Luckily, C.H. also loves to cook, or all three of their children (Lovely Daughter and Darling Sons A and B) would have survived on nothing but Cheerios, beef jerky, and Satsuma mandarins (the extent of E.J.'s culinary skill set).
E.J. also writes traditional cozy mystery as Nelle Heran. She lives in rural Oregon, enjoys visits from her wonderful adult children, and indulges in good books, red wine, and the occasional hyperbole.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2022Matt and Lachlan finally have time to take their relationship to the next level when they're interrupted. The selkies wants a ruler and a consort, there's a shotgun wedding, Matt gets sued and the only one escorting the dead to the next place is a total slacker so untethered souls are causing chaos.
I love the team Matt has made at Quest Investigations and his friendship with Eleri, Jordan and Doop but he's also really good at making friends and allies among the rest of the paranormals. Like to the point that a the Auditor General of Sheol begs him for a boudoir shot. And it's quite clear after a couple of books that Matt sees solutions and thinks in another way than the paranoid that really makes them stronger together.
The book has the usual quest, great humour wonderful characters and some feelings sprinkled all over that.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2022Matthew and his Selkie Lachlan still haven’t consummated their relationship. Matthew finally has hope just to have it dashed when real life and lots of Selkie’s interfere.
I really liked this book. Poor Matt just keeps getting in over his head and it’s delightful. The world building has been so good and the characters (new and old) are great. The author has created very memorable personalities and situations. As usual, a shout out to Doop and Jordan.

Death on Denial is an excellent continuation of the Quest Investigations series. I thoroughly enjoyed Matthew (Hugh Mann) and Lachlan's stutter steps and slow-burn journey to their HEA.
The appearance of characters from other series in this fascinating world the author has created is bittersweet: their continuing HEA is lovely to see, but their purpose in helping to end this series is so sad. The secondary characters support the storyline and add color and humor to the piece, not to mention the roadblocks they throw up in Matthew and Lachlan's path. No one can say they didn't have to work for their relationship.
The case and investigation are well thought out, and I enjoyed watching Hugh and everyone else as they worked their way to a satisfactory conclusion. I was a little creeped out by how the "bad guy" operated, but I enjoyed it anyway. It gave me delicious chills, and I was on the edge of my seat several times.
I'm sad that this series is ending, but I'm hopeful that these wonderful characters will make an appearance in future series.
I look forward to more from this author.

This time out, our favorite human-in-a-supernatural-world, Matt deals with sooo much. Honestly, I’d say it was nearly too much, except that the whole mess of it made me laugh and kept me captivated - like the others in this series, the story is fast-paced and the characters will make you both care about and snort at them. While the romance definitely builds throughout the series, the mystery in this installment is also a bit more dependent on earlier books - points are explained enough that it’s easy to figure it all out, but more fun is to be had by reading it all. Honestly, I’d just love more stories of the crime-solving prowess of Quest Investigations junior investigation team.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2022This was a perfect ending to the series (though I will always hope we get more as the best kind of surprise). Matt/Hugh and Lachlan finally are going to figure everything out, but not before EVERYTHING ELSE happens lol. This book is a roller coaster from start to finish, and I truly felt for Hugh throughout the entire story. It was definitely funny, a little zany, full of amazing cameos, a great storyline, and just an all around fun story from start to finish. I love this little paranormal world that Russell has created, and hope that we get to see much more within it
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2022Sooner or later Matt has to catch a break. And Lachlan will learn how to actually TELL him things. Oh my goodness! I love this world so much and all of the cameos make my heart happy. What an investigation for the Quest crew lies within these pages! I loved it. Who knew Death would go on strike? And selkies are pushy. Well all but Lachlan. I also kind of wish more people would call him Matt instead of Hugh. He has to get tired of that since it isn’t really his name. This was such a fun read. I hope we get to see more of the Quest Investigations team in the future. But at least Matt and Lachlan finally get to connect, even if people and circumstances seem to have it in for them to allow them time alone. I love these characters so much!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2022I have loved all the Quest Investigations stories and am so pleased with Hugh and Lachlan’s happy ending. EJR Russell is among the most inventive storytellers I have read and never disappoints. I can only imagine how she keeps track of characters and story lines across so many interconnected stories.
Looking forward to Hector’s story but I hope we get Jordan’s story before too long.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2022I wanted Matt to slow down and pay attention and listen to Lachlan. Poor Lachlan kept getting shoved to the side while Matt solved everyone’s problems. I’ve really enjoyed this series. There are funny moments mixed with tragedy, mystery, and danger. I liked it as a “Matt deals with Quest business and saves people” but not as a romance, despite how much time Matt spent agonizing over certain relationship things I didn’t feel the connection between them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Planning and romancing
A great ending to this troubled love story! Lachlan and Matthew can finally be together which of course seems to mean the universe is conspiring to keep them from actually having time together. From unlikely lawsuits to conspiring selkies and weird ghostly threats Lachlan and Matthew keep getting pulled apart and their future keeps being questioned.
This one was a bit more of a jumble than the rest of the stories as it takes a while before a clear case comes out even as crisis after crisis occurs. However, this is sort of showing how Matthew and Lachlan have to think about their lives. They are both busy people while also wanting each other and they must figure out what future they want. Matthew worries about being a human even more involved in the paranormal world and Lachlan worries about what his future will be with the promises made in the past. They need to talk but life (and death) are working to keep them apart. Being together and talking is just as important as being together physically and they have to finally take the time to do that.
A truly great ending for this love story while also showing a bit more of the future and hopes for these characters and the ones around them. Love this world and can't wait to see the next character focus in it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Death on Denial
Firstly E.J. Is rocking the puns on the titles.
This is book4 in the Quest Investigations series. Matt and Lachlan are still struggling to find their “Me” time despite them now being free to do so. If it’s not the Selkie high council trying to finagle Lachlan into accepting his duties as King, then it’s a an incarnation of Death refusing his responsibilities because (insert whiny voice) “..there’s just so many of them. When do I get a vacation?” It a collection of incorporeal spirits including one particularly nasty possessive type with an agenda leading to some serious cockblocking. We more of the myth matched crew and some new faces. This could possibly be the end of the series but there is definite potential for more stories in this particular subset.

5.0 out of 5 stars Denial is not an option
SO. MUCH. FUN. This is my main feeling about this book and this series. You don’t actually have to read the series to be able to enjoy this book but really if you like mm fantasy series with a big dose of humor why would you not want to read the whole thing. Yes there is a lot of humor in these books but there is also lots of terrific plot, marvelous characters many of whom are supernatural and love, especially love. I particularly enjoyed Miss. Pennymaker who I am sure we will “see” and enjoy in future books. Write on Ms. Russell. Please!

5.0 out of 5 stars Constant Chaos And Confusion.
MM, Paranormal, Mystery with a romantic subplot. Non stop action and drama throughout the story with great characters, non stop plot twists and humour. Fantastic story, easy to read page-turner that is best read in series order for full understanding and maximum enjoyment. Guaranteed HEA.
