Nothing Like Forever (Finding Forever Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 115 ratings

Theirs should have been the swooniest of love-at-first sight stories, but from the beginning, nothing about Micah and Jake resembled a fairy tale.

Friendship, relationship, whatever-the-hell-ship, Micah is certain of only three things. One, their connection is unlike any he’s had with anyone else. Two, Jake is not his boyfriend. Because the one time he used that word, Jake broke his heart. And three, no matter how far the distance, however long the silences, Jake will always be there for him.

Ever since Jake’s college days, he has stuck to iron-clad rules about hook-ups. No overnights. No repeats. No exceptions. Micah is the only one who’s made him break those rules, an anomaly he finds endlessly intriguing and frustrating. No matter how often they trip over each other’s boundaries, Jake can’t deny something always brings them back together. And it isn’t just that Micah is the sexiest, most passionate man he’s ever met.

It’s something buried deeper—and that scares the hell out of him.

Note: More than friends with benefits but less than partners, Micah and Jake figure it out on a twenty-year journey chronicled in Nothing Like Forever. It’s a slow-burn soulmates story with an unconventional, on-again-off-again relationship, pining from afar and up close, consensual non-monogamy (off page), hot reconnection sex (on page), aromantic awakening, and a unique HEA. Also, drag shows.

Marie Sinclair is a queer (agender/pan) writer living in San Francisco, and prefers she/they pronouns. Her focus is on contemporary romance, usually on the steamy side. While HEAs are guaranteed, it will always take some work for the couples to get there, and it might not look the way they expected at the beginning. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, Marie believes in rooting her stories in the real world of queer culture and showing how love can survive even in challenging times. Her first book, A Kind of Forever, was nominated for two Goodreads Readers’ Choice awards, and her third, Forever After, is a 2023 Lambda Literary Award finalist in Gay Romance.

The story of Jake and Micah seems to be a wild roller coaster as we learn of their first years and through the years, seemingly more a series of partnerships and breakups. They can’t seem to stop returning to each other, even though the next breakup is inevitable. Jake has some hard limits, and Micah, although trying to respect these, wants the romantic relationship that Jake resists. The more you learn of this complicated “relationship“, the more the happy ending you hope for seems to be slipping away. The traditional romance is not found in this book. But, these guys strive to find their way together. You may feel challenged and fear disappointment, but stay with it… A very satisfying conclusion! Also, the series continues … I already bought the next book!!

This book was hard to read, but SO powerful. I spent the whole book worried Jake was going to break Micah’s heart in the end. That is…not what happened. This is a book about a love that stands the test of time, even while being undefined for almost 20 years. It makes you think differently about what love is, and what relationships look like. I especially liked the idea that LGBTQIA relationships can transcend the heteronormative framework we are taught is the “right” way to have a relationship. Recommended!
(I didn’t give it 5 stars only because is was so stressful to read expecting the worst!)

Words cannot describe my love for this book. Jake and Micah are possibly my favorite couple that I've read in awhile, simply because they are so different from other couples in the genre and the reason for that is incredibly simple: Jake is aromantic. This means that the relationship we watch unfold on this book - set over twenty years - is not going to look exactly the same as relationships we've seen in other books and it is beautiful. It is a beautiful story of another way that a relationship can unfold outside of the confines of heteronormativity. It also gives a gorgeous piece of aro rep that I've never actually seen in the romance genre.

As mentioned, this book is set over the course of twenty years. It starts with Jake and Micah's first meeting at the age of eighteen and the instantaneous connection between them. It is a connection that neither boy understands but that keeps them bound together over the course of the following two decades. It is the red string of fate, even if neither of them refer to it as such.

Sinclair takes us through the most developmental parts of their relationship over the next two decades until we finally land in the present day. We watch as they grow apart and come together, never fully done with one another. We see the way their love presents, even when Jake doesn't feel romantic love for Micah. And in seeing it, we see a distinctly unique love story full of firsts and an everlasting love. (It is also full of some of the steamiest scenes I've ever read. In fact some were so steamy I was surprised my kindle didn't catch fire.)

This book can be read as a standalone, though I do recommend reading the first book of the series as the main characters make appearances. It is unnecessary to understand what is happening though and I don't think I would've felt as if I was missing critical information had I not read it before. Also heed the trigger warnings listed at the beginning of this book. Finally, go in recognizing that they do not have a monogamous relationship throughout the course of the book and that not every HEA looks the same. If you go in with an open mind, I think you'll come out satisfied and happy with the story and just as in love with the amazing characters and character development as I was.

I so enjoy MM romances. I find them fun, steamy and easy to read.
And then a book like this one comes around and you keep reading and you keep getting immersed in this world and in the end you realize that you are as ignorant as you were 100 years ago.
Are you wondering what I mean? As a straight female that is in her late *coughing all around* thirties, I always believed that I know a thing or two about the Queer community. And no I don't believe that because I read MM romances. I have friends, I have the internet, you know simple stuff. However, reading some books, and this one is an example of it, I feel like a dinosaur and ignorant as much as the next person. Like Diego said to Jake, our wonderful MC, "But seriously, your definitions could use an upgrade. Relationships, attraction, orientation, gender expression... none of it is a one-size-fits-all. Get online, do some research, get some knowledge already". P.s. Jake is my age!
I loved this book. It is a bit slow because we literally follow Micah and Jake from their late teens till their late thirties. We were craving for their HEA and even though I'm usually inclined to read the last chapter, do not judge me you do it too, I DIDN'T! I wanted to experience every single moment of their relationship and torture myself, without knowing the aftermath.
Their struggles mostly lie in the misconception that they cannot offer each other what they want and need. Poor Jake, he is not aware that he was doing it already!
Their story is unique and as Ry says "there's more than one way to write a love story"! And ain't this the truth people!

I'm happy that they managed to understand themselves and each other in order to be together in their own way! The bottom line is "There wasn't a world in which Jake would send Micah away!"

Thank you to @gayromancereviews for the copy!

MM, Can't live With Him/Can't live without Him romance. Page-turner with an emotionally intense story that takes place over the course of over 20 years. Can be read as a stand-alone with no loss of enjoyment or understanding. Lots of information given and drama, angst, heat and reconciliations throughout the story. I really enjoyed the story, an eventual HEA.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Painful But Stunning Story.

A very angsty, painful to read story as we travel through the years of Jake and Micah's on and off again friendship. Micah loves Jake, always has, but Jake wants no relationship at all, only hook ups. This is a tough read, raw and at times brutal, your heart will ache for Micah. But this is also an absolutely stunning tale, it's long but you get sucked in so deep the pages fly by. The ending made me sit a stare at a blank page, I didn't want it to be over, these two men where so addictive.
