On the Ice (Stick Side Book 1) Kindle Edition
Placed on the injured reserve list until his broken arm heals, NHL defenseman Alex Dean is using the time off to be with his ailing grandfather and get a head start on the book he’s been commissioned to write. He doesn’t expect to get roped into a tutoring gig, especially not for cocky, smart-ass Mitch.
But Alex soon discovers that there’s more to Mitch than meets the eye...and he really likes what he sees. Only Alex doesn’t dare risk his NHL career by coming out, and a relationship between them would jeopardize Mitch’s chances with the organization too.
It looks impossible. Then again, the best things usually do...

- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2018I liked the 2 books I’d read by this author and when I saw hockey romance, my eyes lit up. I never watch hockey but adore books about it. This was a very original storyline and is set nearly a decade ago. Mitch is a driven young man; to excel at hockey, keep his grades up and earn enough to supplement his scholarship. It’s to show his cold-hearted mother he doesn’t need her money or approval, too proud to let even his father know what she’s done. He hides his feelings of rejection behind a cocky, flirty facade and when Alex first meets him, he dismisses Mitch as shallow. Alex is demisexual and the author dies a terrific job of presenting him and how it affects his feelings for Mitch. They have a very(very) slow burn relationship since it takes a growing friendship and Mitch dropping his facade to even reach the point of kissing.
It’s a very long story but it was great reading. I never felt bored and the pacing was very good. There’s not really any on-ice hockey action but it permeates the narrative. I do think it could have been trimmed a bit but there was so much else happening and many characters: Alex’s grandfather, his teammates, his mother, Mitch’s team, family and friends. Yet none of it took over the focus on Mitch and Alex. It’s highly romantic in the truest sense and with minimal sex scenes. Since this is book one, I look forward to seeing which of the excellent secondary subjects will be featured. Recommended.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2021Discovering Amy Aislin and her fantastic M/M novels was the highlight of my month so far. After peaking at her work I was immediately certain that these are the novels I needed at the time.
What is On the Ice?
It is a M/M hockey romance telling Mitch and Alex's story.
Mitch is a loud, outgoing college sophomore playing hockey and dominating the ice with his talent. At least that's what he shows to the world.
In reality, his a smart, dedicated student who won't stop until he's drafted to the NHL despite the family drama that pulls him back.
And his new tutor who tries to save him from loosing his scholarship is his hockey crush who in no uncertain terms rejected him in two sentences.
Alex is a defensman for a Florida team. When he's put on the IR list he visits back to Vermont to see his grandpa.
To pass the time between visits and writing his own book he is roped into tutoring the annoying yet smart student who came on to him when they first met.
And this book basically tells their story together.
The Story:
It was a simple but well constructed story about hockey, what people do to achieve their goals, dealing with Alzheimer's, demisexuality and finding the one person you can open up to and be safe with.
There were so many great angles to this book I don't even know which one to focus on.
My absolute favurite part was probably that one of the main characters were demisexual. There are only a few books dealing with this kind of sexuality and it was really nice that I got to know a lot more about the experiences.
My other favourite that I could actually relate to as well was Grandpa Forest's Alzheimer's. It is a brutal disease and it mostly puts the family in pain not tje patient.
All in all, there were a lot of great aspects in this book that made it unique and enjoyable as well as relatable and heartbreaking.
The Characters:
Mitch's younger character was very complex due to the family issues he needed to deal with. He was impulsive yet planned out his whole life. He was cockey yet extremely vulnerable. His two face was known to only a few pepple so his shock when Alex figures him.out is priceless.
Alex is a much more reserved character but with some more issues to figure out for himself. In his case, his sexuality and how he can build his full life around it is the most interesting.
To sum it up, it was a great book. From start to finish I loved it. The characters were loveable, the story entertaiming, the issues mentioned relatable.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2022On the Ice is the first book in the Stick Side series, a contemporary romance series featuring hot and delicious hockey players. Mitch is a fascinating character full of spunk and sass with an unstoppable work ethic. The friendship that develops between Alex, the NHL hockey player, and Mitch was wonderful to see, and it felt natural how it evolved into something romantic and sweet. I loved all of Mitch's family drama - his mother frustrated me, but made a great adversary in the book. This was a fun book and I immediately picked up the next book in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2023I had not read this author before, but this was recommended to me as a good hockey series, so I gave it a try—and loved it! One of the main characters, Alex, is demisexual and I think it was the first time I read a book where the character knows he’s demisexual going in. Because of that, it’s a pretty slow burn mainly because Alex and Mitch need to take that time to get to know each other before that attraction can develop. There was a lot of discussion about demisexuality that I loved. No one could come out of this book without a good understanding of demisexuality unless they weren’t paying attention! I honestly loved watching these guys form such a close friendship first, it only made their relationship stronger. Mitch especially had to really let down the walls he’s built up and be real and vulnerable with Alex. It’s a bit of a lower heat book, but pretty emotional. I loved these characters! I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series!
Oh, and I think it’s funny that the book is called 𝘖𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘤𝘦, because it had the least amount of actual hockey game play I think I’ve ever read in a hockey book! It’s fine with me, but anyone looking for a lot of game play and locker room scenes is not going to find that here. The book really focuses more on the main characters’ personal lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book!
Love this book! For those who love a MM romance, with a hockey theme troupe, this series is a must read! I recommend reading the books in order to fully enjoy the story as intended, even though these are all stand alone books.

5.0 out of 5 stars So damn good, can't wait for Cody's book. Highly recommended.
On the Ice, 1st time I've read anything from this author and it wont be the last. This book was fabulous, an absolute delight to read for so many reasons and way too many to go into without ruining the book. The blurb is a basic synopsis and really doesn't do this fabulous book justice.
In a typical sporting theme plot this novel deals with romance between the 2 main protagonists as they juggle their careers in a professional sports world heavily dominated by heterosexuality, and homophobia. Add in the difficulties each man faces dealing with peer pressure, parental expectations, media interest, sports politics, health, finance and understanding the sliding scales on the sexuality spectrum and this book was a joy to read.
I can honestly say there wasn't anything about either Alex the professional hockey player/writer, nor Mitch the college nerd/ hockey player that I didn't love, in fact I was sad the novel ended. Secondary characters were fabulous as well, with enough depth to be engaging and so very teasingly interesting, I can't wait for Cody's & JP's book to come out.
If you love gay romance, set to a sporting hockey theme your going to love this book. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best MM book I've read to date
This author has me falling in love with these characters. I love the way the story replicates real life challenges and focuses on the main characters building a life together going through the normal daily struggles. It's this aspect that makes the characters so relatable.

I really liked this story and its characters. Mitch was great, Alex was great, even Cody, Mitch’s dad and other side characters were great. I really enjoyed following Mitch and Alex’s love story. I have nothing else to say, just that it was a nice and sweet book and I don’t regret buying it.

4.0 out of 5 stars New to me author, but hockey 😉...
Enjoyed this slow-burn hockey romance, although there were a few niggles for me, including the fact that the author felt it necessary to keep explaining demisexuality...as if none of us know what it is [hello...ever heard of googling it?].
The evil bitch mother never actually made a physical appearance in the story thank goodness, and was therefore severely limited to incredibly stupid phone calls and texts BUT I was rather p****d off with both members of Mitch's remaining family, older brother who was railroaded into doing something he didn't want to do on the pretext of saving his younger sibling from who knows what, and a seemingly caring Dad who apparently didn't know that his younger son was putting himself through college with no financial help whatsoever from his mother. Talk about a dysfunctional family... Thank heavens for Alex and his mum, and good friends. I will be continuing with the series.
