Stumptown Spirits: M/M Supernatural Suspense (Legend Tripping Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 169 ratings

A life in hock.

Seven years ago, Logan Conner and his legend tripper college roommate stumbled into the middle of a ghost war. Logan escaped. Trent did not. Guilt has driven Logan to hunt for answers ever since—not only for why Trent was trapped, but how to return and save him.

On the verge of abandoning the search as hopeless, Logan discovers the solution at last thanks to folklorist Riley Morrel, the man he never expected to fall in love with, and the man he’d do anything to keep safe, including leaving him behind.

A life on hold.

When Logan disappeared in a puff of motorcycle exhaust, Riley’s life took a nosedive. After dropping out of school, he’s not entirely sure it’s not still diving. Sure, he has a job—one that’d send his thesis advisor screaming. Still, there are perks to his gig as the researcher for paranormal investigation show Haunted to the Max: He’s in the ideal position to propose projects for the team to tackle.

Like their latest episode in Portland, for instance, where Logan just happens to be bartending. If nothing else, confronting the big jerk will give Riley some closure.

A life’s last hour.

But as the two men take tentative steps toward each other again, they begin to realize that their relationship, the shoot, and Logan’s quest to free Trent are hopelessly entangled with one tragic day at the riverside, over a century and a half in the past.

And when the smoke finally clears? Not everyone will walk away.

Stumptown Spirits is a second-chance, opposites-attract, supernatural suspense romance featuring a TV show one step past jumping the shark, a narcissistic TV personality, a craven ex-ghost, annoying bosses, interfering (but well-meaning) friends, personal redemption, and, of course, an HEA.

Note: This book was previously published. It has been lightly revised and re-edited, but the story remains the same.

"Stumptown Spirits was so freaking entertaining that I stayed up until 2 am to finish it because I HAD TO KNOW!" - Crystal's Many Reviews

"...by the time I was at the halfway mark I didn't want to put the book down. The final action scenes and denouement of the paranormal tale was downright amazing. I can't say much without spoiling things but there was more than one surprise thrown at me. Overall this was an incredible ghost story with a sweet romance thrown in." -

"I'm going to put it out there straight away:
Stumptown Spirits is one pretty damn cool book. The writing just pulls me in and the story itself did the rest to keep my attention." - MM Good Book Reviews

About the Author

E.J. Russell (she/her), author of the award-winning Mythmatched paranormal romance series, writes LGBTQ+ romance and mystery in a rainbow of flavors. Count on high snark, low angst, and happy endings.

Reality? Eh, not so much.

She's married to Curmudgeonly Husband, a man who cares even less about sports than she does. Luckily, C.H. also loves to cook, or all three of their children (Lovely Daughter and Darling Sons A and B) would have survived on nothing but Cheerios, beef jerky, and Satsuma mandarins (the extent of E.J.'s culinary skill set).

E.J. also writes traditional cozy mystery as Nelle Heran. She lives in rural Oregon, enjoys visits from her wonderful adult children, and indulges in good books, red wine, and the occasional hyperbole.

When I bought this book I was looking for a fun read with a touch of romance and mystery. I enjoyed it very much. While Logan may be a bit heavy-handed in the way he attempts to control things, it worked for me. Nothing wrong with a pain in the butt hero so long as he pays his dues and learns from his mistakes. :) Riley is endearing. Just a great guy who gets more than his fair share of abuse from more than Logan, but who always maintains a sense of integrity no matter what. I especially liked how the paranormal elements flowed throughout the story. The author has a lovely talent for character interaction. I enjoyed her colorful characters. Her writing is very clean and crisp. Of course, I counted on the HEA ending and got that. An entertaining plot and strong writing made this one of my favorite reads. :)

This started off a bit slow for me but I get that that may have been do to having to get some of the backstory. Getting past that was so worth it though. I found myself sucked into this story and so anxious to see how things ended up. I'm looking forward to book two now.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

If I’m reading this right, this is an early E.J. Russell book and I’m not sure how I missed it. Logan and Riley are quite the interesting couple and a few times, I found myself angry on Riley’s behalf and yet, like the character, I was rooting for Logan to stop being a deliberate jerk. Great paranormal arc with the ghost war and, of course, an HEA that took more work than most.

Fans of this author will not be disappointed

I really hated Logan for running so hot and cold on Riley. I can’t imagine what Riley sees in him. Good plot, though.

Oh, man. This book. These characters! This is the kind of story where the longer I think about it now I'm done, the better I like it, and I loved it. So what are you waiting for? Go!

I wasn't a huge fan of this particular story, E.J. Russel's books are amazing. This being a 2nd chance book, it was slow to get me hooked. And Logan is a character that at first I kind of didn't like but as the story progressed, I could respect him and wanted to find out what was happening. Overall, I did like the book and will most definitely continue to read any books E.J Russell outs out!

Sooooo, I went back and forth as to whether or not I was going to review this book. I’m not a big fan of ghost stories. I’m not a fan of time travel themes. I’m really, really not a fan of reality-style ghost hunting shows. And yet, something about the blurb kept calling me back to it. I said no. Then I said maybe. I said no, again. Then I said, oh heck, I’ll give it a go. [Thank you, boss lady, for being patient with my indecisive self.] When I saw that the book was creeping up on my review schedule, I started it a few days early, just in case I had trouble getting into the ghost story – I wanted to be able to walk away for a day or two, and come back to it with a clear head (yes, that’s how hard of a time that I have with romances with spectral themes). In the end, I fretted for no reason. Stumptown Spirits was so freaking entertaining that I stayed up until 2 am to finish it because I HAD TO KNOW! I had to know if the ghost war was real. I had to know if Logan saved his roommate. I had to know if Logan martyred himself or if he managed to make it out. I had to know who was responsible for sabotaging the show. And most importantly, I had to know if Logan and Riley got back together.

Because Stumptown Spirits is a bit of a romantic suspense and a bit of a mystery, I really cannot go into specific details because it would be way too easy to reveal a spoiler. And take it from someone who wasn’t convinced she would enjoy the book, you do not want the story spoiled. Any of it. This is the kind of book that you’ll want to experience for yourself, so if someone warns that their review might contain spoilers, AVOID IT! What I will say, is that I thoroughly enjoyed Russell’s writing style and I was hooked almost immediately. Oh yeah, I forgot that the reason I finally said yes to reviewing this book was because I read the excerpt on the publisher’s website that featured the first couple of chapters. I was hooked and when I got to the end of the excerpt, I wanted to keep reading – and that was with only meeting Riley. Once I began reading the actual book and Logan was thrown into the mix, as well as Riley’s best friend, and the crew from the cheesy ghost hunting show, I couldn’t stop reading until I reached the end. And what an ending it was! I literally exclaimed, “That was awesome!” when I got to the last page. I absolutely loved Stumptown Spirits and am so glad I got the chance to read it.

My recommendation? If you enjoy romances that contain ghosts, then grab this. If you’re not a big fan of ghost stories, but find yourself on the fence, download the sample and read the beginning – you’ll figure out quickly whether or not it appeals to you. If you’re still undecided, I hope you’ll take a chance like I did and find it just as entertaining. As for me, I’m stoked to learn that there is a second book in the series (yes, series!!!) being released in October. I cannot wait for Wolf’s Clothing.

I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

A different kind of M/M paranormal mystery. When Riley Morrel’s boyfriend Logan Connor up and disappears suddenly Riley is thrown into turmoil not knowing why. A feud going back 150 years, a Romeo and Juliet tragedy, a recurrent haunting that actually drags unwitting victims to replace the “ghosts” in the grisly reenactment.
When “Haunting to the Max”, a schlock fake ghost hunting TV show, turns up to film the alleged haunting all sorts of strange occurrences begin.
Will Logan rescue his friend, will Riley stop Logan sacrificing himself, will the alleged haunting actually prove to be real?

3.0 out of 5 stars Lots of supernatural mystery, a little weak in relationship
Reviewed in Canada on September 29, 2024
3.25/5 This had an entertaining supernatural mystery, and I liked Riley a lot from the get-go. I found Logan much more frustrating (in part because he based a huge part of his decision-making on how grief worked for one person he knew. His assumption that Riley would feel exactly the same way and Logan was therefore doing the best thing for him was incredibly annoying. If he knew and cared about Riley enough to be planning the rest of their life together, wouldn’t he understand that “not knowing” would actually be the worst thing for Riley?)

I did enjoy the occasional sweeter moment between Riley and Logan, but I wish that they’d communicated better, that Logan had actually considered listening and trusting. (I know a big part of this was his guilt, which helps, since he’s not behaving rationally, but I would have liked a few more examples of a functional, healthy relationship between Logan and Riley.) I did feel the tension of the feelings between the two of them, but that was almost only ever in Logan’s internal POV. How he treated Riley day to day was usually pretty awful, so it felt a little precarious as a reader to simply trust that once everyone got resolved we’d be back to that apparently great relationship that we heard about but never saw before Logan torched everything and ran.

I enjoyed seeing Riley find more confidence again and work hard to save everyone, not just Logan. I appreciated the lessons that folklore and stories taught, and the way that Riley used them to guide his actions in the present.

I’m not totally sure about the next MC, so I’m looking forward to seeing what I’m guessing will be something of a redemption arc.

4.0 out of 5 stars Supernatural mm story

This is another great beginning to an mm supernatural series by EJ Russell this one about people trying to film a paranormal investigation show and the only real incident that they come across. I love Ms. Russell’s use of language and dialogue which make her books just a pleasure to read. I did feel like the romance wasn’t given as good a treatment as the romances in other books by this author. I felt a bit lost at times with why Riley was still willing to take back Logan after what he had done and how nasty Logan was even after Riley came back to town. The supernatural part of the story was terrific though.
