Never assume

…that your uber competent personal assistant will get it when you announce your (fake) engagement to him during a live on-air interview with your archnemesis.

Never waver…

…from your plan to punish your arrogant celebrity boss for his presumption by turning your (fake) wedding into a reality competition for event planners.

Never admit…

…that the feelings blossoming between the two of you through seven (fake) engagement celebrations, six (fake) bachelor parties, five (fake) wedding party luncheons, and four (fake) rehearsal dinners are about as (real) you can get.

Camera Shy is a boss/employee, fake-engagement, right-in-front-of-your-nose romantic comedy featuring a former child model-turned-PA who is so done with cameras, a cocky LGBTQ activist/talk show host who does not lose, more scarves than midwinter in Boston, and banter. So. Much. Banter.

Fantastic slow burn romance. Dustin has low key been pining over Ari for years but won't even admit it to himself. While Ari is just a self-obsessed who is oblivious to everyone around him other than going good for his causes. When Ari is faced with losing Dustin as his PA, he does some soul searching and gets a smack in the face of self-awarness. He definitely doesn't change overnight, but there is effort. Dustin is a work-a-holic to feels he needs to prove himself behind the scenes after vanishing from the world as a child star.
These two weirdly complement each other well, and throughout the story grow as individuals and together. I really enjoyed the snark and the cast of side characters. I'm not always the biggest fan of slow burn, but the banter and on-going story kept me engaged through the story.

    SPOILERS:
I really struggled with scoring this story bc it’s a good story but there were things that just irked me enough I had to score it the way I did.

I first want to say that I loved the premise of the story. I loved how Dustin didn’t take crap from Ari and made him regret being a selfish bastard.

The romance was just ok. There WAS enough emotional evolution between the characters to make the story believable but there weren’t enough intimate moments showing Dustin letting his guard down for me, the reader, to get really emotionally invested in the story. I kept wanting more intimate moments to enjoy the soft squishiness of hopeful love.

There was decent sexual tension throughout but there were NO on page love making ( and even that didn’t happen till the book was almost done). Now I don’t need this to be an erotic romance (although with all the sexual tension it would have been a nice enhancement to the story to see the sparks turn into fire), but I would have liked some better moments where each MC appreciated the other.

By that I mean sinking in to the kissing and then being effected by it, cuddling and snuggling. I WANTED there to be more than, “ I love him but he doesn’t want me but bc I love him I’ll help save his career” and then at the last moment, “ oh I guess he does love me let’s get married”.

This story also kinda did that thing were if the 2 characters had just sat down and had an honest 5 minute conversation half the drama wouldn’t have been there.

Despite all of that this was an interesting enough story I stayed up half the night wanting the big pay off of all the feels. But the ending left me wanting. Don’t get me wrong it was a HEA, I feel like it just needing beefing up in the romance department.

Which is a shame bc other books by this author have been really good.

For folks who are fans of EJ Russell's paranormal romances, you won't find magic, vampires or fae in this book. But you will find the same plucky characters, pithy dialog and satisfying conclusions. The story was action light, with a good touch of angst. For the negatives, the MCs spent a lot of time separated and the equation of love was a little less believable because of that fact. Still a nice light read, though.

I guess I was hoping for more resolutions. This book stacked multiple characters inside and not all of their issues were addressed at the HEA. I mean sure it was all cutesy and great for Ari and Dustin, which is fine. It's just that a lot if the ending failed to neatly conclude all the conflicts. I think it was a great disservice to not devote more time to them.

Loved this story. It was romantic and funny without humiliating anyone. The main characters were competent, and even the new PA got recognized as being good at his job and a good person. Our evil villains were satisfyingly put in their places. This was an excellent story, so Thank you EJ!

I read this book through Kindle Unlimited.

Camera Shy is a cute story to while away a couple of days with (I would read a while and put it down a bit until I was done). The overall feel of the book was interesting and kept my attention.
Dustin and Ari are, individually, exciting characters.
It took me a while to like Ari, though I never did love him as I would like to.
Dustin was easier to care about, and I immediately felt a closeness to him.
As a couple, I liked them both enough to hope their HEA lasted well after I turned the last page.
I look forward to more from this author.

This book about the know-it-all feelingless talk show host and the perfect PA who put up with him was a good story. I felt the book dragged a fraction once it reached the let's -get-this-new-tv-show-on-the-road section, however, all in all, it was a good plotline.

This was the audible version. Excellently presented, hilarious, and very enjoyable. The star of the show, in an attempt to win an argument, fakes his engagement. His personal assistant, the fake and unwarned victim, decides on revenge. Things are never that simple. Add in a terrifying CEO, media interest and sides taken, a PA's hidden and embarrassing past, a star with so many brief and discarded boyfriends that he should be embarrassed, and a clever reality tv idea......that works.....and is undermined by helpfully intentioned friends, camera crew, and a devastating denouement. Well, will there be a happy ending?

A very sweet low angst story full of some hilarious revenge and really sweet thrown together romance.

Dustin has a crush on his boss Ari but he is very good at his job. No one keeps Ari on track like Dustin or gets together everything he needs to run the show, all while staying firmly behind the camera. But that is the way Dustin wants it, determined never to be in front of a camera again. When Ari feels backed into a corner on his show and invites Dustin to come on camera as his previous unknown finance Dustin has to go into damage control, all while staying off camera.

Ari has been a trailblazer for the LGBT community and wants to stay at the front of that with his talk show the way he always has; aggressive and focused on progress. He doesn't imagine that Dustin will refuse this gambit he has made but is soon shown the error of his ways and also realizes there is more to Dustin than he ever thought.

Dustin's "revenge" on Ari soon throws the two into entirely new situations as they must fake their relationship but also change their off camera relationship and figure out new roles. It shows them a new way forward and also shows them things they didn't realize they already had.

A very sweet and really funny story, this was an excellent read that stands alone!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a romantic comedy
Reviewed in Australia on September 21, 2022

Perhaps I went into this with too high expectations? I was expecting more of a connection between Ari and Dustin, and more comedy (or at least a little bit of humour!!) given this was marketed as a rom-com.

I found Ari very hard to like. He basically treats Dustin like a servant/slave for the vast majority of the story, and then near the end has that lightbulb moment... but it wasn't that he was in love, not yet (that came in the final few pages). It was that he'd be lost without Dustin, and no-one would put up with him like Dustin did. I guess this could eventually evolve into love, but I really failed to see it. For a supposed Rom-Com, Dustin was quite self-depreciative and had a lot of self-esteem issues. It was quite a downer, but also a serious topic that was introduced and then glossed over. Regardless, why he would still fall for someone who treated him so badly was beyond me. I really couldn't identify or empathise with either MC. I think it also didn't help that there were next to no intimate scenes, and anything more than kissing was complete fade to black. The romance part of "romantic comedy"? Nowhere to be seen either.

The storyline didn't really have much depth either. The book takes place across a 10 week period, but we got skips and jumps between weeks in that time frame which also affected the ability for the storyline to really develop. The situation with Dustin's ex and mother seemed to be thrown in just for a bit of angst/drama, but really didn't add much to the story.

Overall an OK read, but not what I was expecting. Others might enjoy it more, especially if you don't go in with the high expectations I did.
