4.3 out of 5 stars 453 ratings

As the new head coach of the Vancouver Orcas, Matt Shore has got his work cut out for him. Coming off a season where the Orcas came in last in the entire AHL, Matt’s job is to whip his new hockey team into shape for the oncoming season.

He doesn’t need any distractions, especially not one in the form of a tall, dark, and gorgeous antiques dealer.

Who’s also his ex—and his best player’s father.

Pierce Langley-Brown has a lot of regrets. The biggest? Leaving Matt behind two years ago when his son needed him. Now, with his son on Matt’s hockey team, there’s no avoiding the man who once owned his heart.

Not that Pierce wants to avoid him. And that heart? It still belongs to Matt.

But will Matt choose to keep it after all this time?

Matt and Pierce have history. When Pierce walked away from Matt two years earlier, he was in a downward spiral. Getting along with his son and staying with his head above water was all he could do. When Pierce's son is placed on Matt's semi pro hockey team, they have a chance meeting. Old feelings haven't died, nor were they likely to. But admittedly he had a problem mentally back when he left, is difficult. But Matt is willing to give him another chance, because love hasn't died.

Sweet and touching view of mental illness and how someone deals with it. Lots of heat too!

    Book 1, Vancouver Orca’s 🎧
    Narrated by Aaron Hokanson

This was my first Amy Aislin book and I’m a fan. I don’t hide my love of hockey romances and the fact that this book is set where I live was icing on the cake. It was pretty neat hearing all the streets, restaurants etc mentioned and knowing where everything is.

Pierce and Matt reconnect after breaking up 2 years prior. Pierce is desperate for a second chance but Matt is understandably wary given the way they had ended. They start seeing each other as friends again and Matt is cautious and Pierce is hopeful.

This story really is about second chances. Especially for Pierce. A second chance at being a partner, father, brother and business owner. I enjoyed seeing the progression of all these aspects of his life.

Matt was a very likeable character. Kinda stoic, serious and commanding in a really hot way! He was very understanding of Pierce and very protective of him which I loved.

I also really liked the flashbacks to how they met and even how they broke up. It really gave you a look into Matt and Pierce “before” and was integral into understanding the current tension between the two.

    If you like reading about:

    🏒 Mental health rep
    🏒 Second chances
    🏒 Lovers-friends-lovers
    🏒 Low angst
    🏒 Hockey!!!

Then this book is for you!

    🔥🔥

My only gripe is how the narrator said Coachella (Palm Springs, CA) 😆He said it coh-ah-chella. It’s literally said like you’d think…ko-chella.

I was in the middle of a very long series of books and decided I needed a break. Game Changer had just come in to my library. But then I realized it was Book 2 I went in search of Book 1 which I already owned and started reading. I love it when in the first chapter you are so into it, you don't think about anything else but reading more! That is how I was. I mean it is a fun story because it is dealing with hockey but then there is something very serious in there. Depression. Depression so bad you can't get out of bed or think what to do sometimes even what to eat. The only thing that ever got Pierce out of bed was his son. Fortunately even he knew how bad it was and called in family.
It took Pierce seeing a therapist regularly. And I like that they point out on Zoom. There are lots of people who think that you still need to go in office. I felt like this book did such a great job about showing Pierce 's Depression and how it affected everyone around him and then once he got better and came back to Vancouver what it was like to get back into everyone's lives.
I love to read about the relationship between Pierce and Matt and the ups and downs they have had but they survived it all because of love. Yes there is some erotica but not heavy.
It is more their love story and the relationship as well between Jason, Pierce's son and Pierce and Matt his Coach. I find that in general Matt is such a super supportive character ( except about the NDA). Matt is the kind of coach any team would wish to have because his type of support helps his other coaches be supportive and it makes for a great group all around whether it is hockey, football, soccer, or swimming. Does not matter. Everyone wants support like that.
This book is SO WORTH READING! TAKE THE TIME!

This is a 2.75 star read for me. I love ice hockey... like, it's my favorite sport ever... so hockey romances are usually my jam. Game Plan is the first book in the Orca series and it was OK for me.

    What I liked:
AHL representation even if the teams are made up, it is still cool to see the minor leagues represented and honestly in the depiction that the players don't make what the guys in the big league make.

I also liked that the author didn't shy away from the not so nice aspects of mental illnesses and the road to recovery and management.

    What I didn't like:
Matt was supposedly demi which should have been the biggest YES from me. I think we need more ace characters out there. But, the fact that everything with Pierce was so insta, it literally buys into the insane reteric that "asexual peeps just haven't met the right person yet". Even Matt being on dating apps (not that ace people don't use them) but there was nothing about trying to develop a friendship or some other sort of bond first before jumping into dating. Again, it just didn't come across as genuine.

The fact that Matt just rolls over like a golden retriever and goes back to Pierce. There seemed to be token hesitation, but this dude walked away for 2 years without word and within like 2 days you're back to dinner dates and by 40% of the way through the book you are back to lovey dovey.

Some small details bothered me a lot... there was one hockey game about 3/4 of the way through... the Orca's first shut out that from Matt's POV the goalie made some rediculously hugh number of saves to get yhe shut out... like almost 70... from one team... the NHL record is 73 SOG in a game and the first time you get a shutout in the big leagues with a high number of saves, it was in the low 60s. Now, I'm not saying that it doesn't happen, but unless your goalie is the next Lundqvist, Quick, Holtby, or [enter Vezina trophy winning NHL goalie here] ... or you get super excited about setting an AHL record for saves in a single game, I would have rather had this be a more believable number.

In the end, it's a cute read that kinda drags in places, and was just ok for me. It's awesome if you don't feel the same, these were just my opinions!

Loved this book. Amy Aislin is quickly becoming one of my favourite mm sports writers. While hockey is the base for this book, this story goes well beyond diving into themes surrounding lost love, mental illness, divorce, the struggles between family members and how those around us might be affected by our actions/decisions. This is a great start to this new series and I can't wait to read the rest.

Second chances, hockey and Amy Aislin’s writing: this book has everything I love in a romance.
I adored Matt and my heart totally went out to Pierce.
I loved everything about this book. The characters, the setting, the pacing of the writing. Everything is just perfect.
Plus, I got the illustrated cover paperback, and the cool illustrations of the book scenes are just the cutest!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great second chance romance!

Somewhat unorthodox approach to a second chance romance but so good.
The characters are dynamic and passionate and wonderfully written.

The respect, understanding and compassion shown when discussing mental health and depression (as one of the MCs has depression) was refreshing to read. It was honest and truthful without the stigma and usually darkness associated with this disease. As someone with a mental illness it was nice to see a character seeking help and in the process of healing and managing their condition in this story.

Lots of hockey stuff which I still know nothing about but it's fun and fast paced.

    A great read.

💕 It’s no secret that I love second chance stories. When two people spend years apart only to reconnect. To delve into the reason for the split in the first place. That initial heartache. When they put aside that hurt because that love, longing and attraction has never waned. Because that’s their person even then they were gone.

I love the fact that it’s an AHL team and the book talks about the challenges with coaching a developmental team. The pride of having your best player called up to the NHL whilst also the loss of said player on your team and the frustration at constantly having to change up lines as a result.

I loved that the book was set in Vancouver with a quick jaunt out to the island. I haven’t been to either in a while and it was a lovely trip down memory lane.
