The Emperor's Bone Palace (Infernal War Saga Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 280 ratings

Every heart is meant to break.

THE NAMELESS. As a warden, Soren’s duty is to guard against the dead, but he was never trained to guard against his heart. Drawn into a web of Solarian politics, Soren finds himself at the center of a storm of his own making, unwilling to break free if it means losing the man he loves. But even the darkest secrets cannot remain hidden forever, and when lies come to light, the price he pays for his silence may very well be his undoing.

THE EMPEROR. When his claim to the Imperial throne is challenged by a traitorous House, Vanya Sa’Liandel must adhere to the ancient tradition of the Conclave to stay in power. Refusing to face his peers alone, Vanya will stand before the Houses of Solaria with Soren by his side, a decision that risks his heart when an unspeakable betrayal threatens everything he’s fought for.

THE REBEL. With her entire world upended, Caris Dhemlan is on the run, struggling to come to terms with the truth of her heritage. As the Clockwork Brigade is targeted by Daijal, she must fight to save the people she cares about. Every rebellion needs a figurehead, but Caris is determined not to become a martyr.

THE QUEEN. With a crown claimed, Eimarille Rourke sets her sights on Ashion and the continent beyond her country’s borders. Promised a world by a star god, Eimarille sets into motion the gears of war and launches the opening salvo of a battle whose repercussions will ripple across the whole of Maricol.

Wow is all that I can say. I laughed and cried and screamed in a few spots. Twists and turns and betrayal from the least expected people. I can’t wait to see what is in store for the next installment in this book series.

"Pray for a star to burn as guide
Never to live, always to die
A road is a future and it carries a past
For what is burned is only ever ash"

This second book was a bit slow to start, what with pieces and pawns needing to be put in strategic places and that took a bit of time but after the 27% things picked up and never slowed down. And oh how everything moved on a chessboard that has many masters.

If you discount today (Monday) that I had to work, I was reading this almost non-stop. I say almost because I just had to stop at places to breathe and assimilate everything that was going, put pieces of the puzzle in place, broaden the map of what I knew.

"Wardens are nameless and starless. There is no guiding star for us."

And if that isn't the biggest tragedy and injustice I don't know what is.... maybe it's what Eimarille did to the Warden's Island filled with young and teen tithes, recovering Wardens and Wardens that could no longer be on the field.

"After you finish walking this road the Dusk Star sent you down, when you come home, I'll marry you all over again."

"It's never a goodbye between us."

"My road will always lead me back to you."

Unlike the first book Honovi and Blaine had a lot of time together here and it was lovely seeing them just be with each other, reminiscing times their lives were their own and hoping against hope for a peaceful future that they could travel the skies together. Hailey of course had to pull her signature move, separate them and let's just say our poor boys went through hell and they haven't reached the other side yet!

'[...]her road no longer her own.'

Ah Caris! Poor Caris, losing her beloved, losing her parents, losing the future she had planned for herself and getting one she feels like a puppet being lead on, by star gods, by Meleri, by a people loyal to a bloodline she didn't know was hers and doesn't know she wants with how suddenly it was thrust upon her.

She stands up though, proud and fierce and blazes a unique roads of hers. It may be leading to the crown of Ashion at first glance, but Hailey spins quite intricate stories so who knows how the Ashion throne will be in the end.

'She was a Rourke, after all, and the Rourke bloodline was meant to rule. Whether by decree or by force, one way or another, Eimarille would take a throne and wear a crown.'

Eimarille is the perfect villain, and I mean that as a compliment. A perfect villain that I will never, ever come to like! She's conceited, arrogant and power hungry and more of a pawn of a star god than anyone else in this amazing second book of an incredible steampunk fantasy weaved by Hailey Turner.

'Nathaniel Clementine's body was a battlefield, and his mind was a graveyard of who he used to be.'

There's a lot happening here with Nathaniel, the Klovod, veils and rionetkas. A lot of questions were answered of how rionetkas might go unnoticed. But I'm now wondering about the Klovod. In the first book it seemed like he was doing what he was doing willingly, but now I'm questioning this... it seems like the puppet master might be a puppet himself. I'll be waiting to see how this will evolve.

"I never wanted your vow, but you gave it to me anyway. I can do what I want with it."
"You've asked for nothing over the years."
"Because if I ever did, I'd have to leave.

'The one thing you couldn't trade for your heart's desire was your heart.'

"You had me[...] No one else ever did but you had me."

Oh how good things were going between Vanya and Soren. Oh how it wasn't meant to last. In the face of a deep betrayal in Vanya's household, Soren's truth coming to light isn't something that Vanya can think on clearly and things fracture between them. Will they be able to mend them? Who knows... but I'm on Soren's side here. I understand Vanya's first reactions but then he had time to cool down and think. But he was too butt hurt to see things from Soren's side. To talk with him. See him truly!

All this unrest in Solaria and Eimarille has manufactured advanced style of Sentinels that I don't know if the forces that oppose Daijal's and Eimarille's oppressive rules will be able to fight against. I'm really hoping Hailey will surprise us here and not let them be decimated.

Can't wait for the next book for which we have no title or tentative release date (°0°)

After reading (and loving) this sequel, I stand firm in my belief that The Infernal War Saga is one of the best fantasy series I’ve read in recent years. The fact that it is set in a steampunk-inspired world, is queer centered, and has multiple (spicy) romances to flail over … well all of that is the icing on the cake. Not to mention the literal poisoned and inhospitable land, clockwork enemies, AND zombie-like revenants prowling for cities to overwhelm??? This just so much about this series to love.

The Emperor’s Bone Palace continues to stun, just as this epic world did in the first book. Hailey Turner can truly write it all, from the action and battles, to the spicy, intimate scenes, to the twisty, backstabbing, and political maneuvering—this book has everything and does it well. Really well.

The story picks up right where the previous book left off, and kicks off running. We continue to follow a full cast of characters, from various locations on the map, and stations in life. Soren and Vanya, Blaine and Honovi, Caris and Nathaniel, and yes even you, Eimarille—I love them all and the romance between characters is *chef’s kiss* top notch.

I was NOT ready to finish, and the plot twists just kept coming, and coming. We’re left on a precarious precipice and I’m so excited to see what the latest revelations mean for the world!

We pick up pretty much right where the first book leaves off. Vanya is struggling to keep people from questioning his choices as emperor (with not as many allies as those who would oppose him) - especially since Soren has taken Raiah away to keep her safe. And it seems Soren’s task is harder than they’d first thought it would be.
Caris and Blaine are dealing with their own issues - with the Clockwork Brigade and Caris’ heritage and poor Honovi is dealing with the aftermath of the decision he made in the previous book to save them. We won’t talk about poor Nathaniel - my poor heart can’t handle it.
And Eimarille - the character I love to hate. She’s claimed the throne and has her sights on Ashion and she’s devious enough she just might succeed.

Throughout this book Caris comes into her own, we get to see more of the wardens, Eimarille puts her plans into motion, Vanya has to gather supporters against Joelle to defend against her lies. Among other more spoilery things.

This book was everything I could’ve hoped for and more (despite all the torture of my babies) - and I can’t wait for the last book to come out. The last several, and I mean several, chapters are big and it, of course, ends on a bit of a cliffhanger.

The Emperor's Bone Palace is an excellent continuation of the Infernal War Saga. I recommend rereading the first book just before beginning this one since the many names and locations can get confusing.
As in the first book, I am impressed with the world-building of this series. Both books have fascinated me with the richness of the descriptions, which made each location come alive in my imagination.
The same can be said for character development. So many characters could be lost in such a large and intricate work, but the author gives them unique personalities, pursuits, and political stances that keep them from fading into the background. For the most part, I can see what they stand for and why, and I enjoy moving from scene to scene with them. That does not mean that they have an easy go of it. This author is known for a propensity of putting characters through he!! and there are examples of that in this book. I would be disappointed if I didn't get to yell and curse the author for being so diabolical toward the characters I've come to love and admire.
The Emperor's Bone Palace picks up close to where The Prince's Poisoned Vow left off. It took a while to get into this one, but I couldn't put it down once I did.
I look forward to more from this author.

I gave book 1 in this series 5 stars and I didn’t think the second one would top it, but it managed to exceed my every expectation, and they were high. For those of you who love original and interesting fantasy world-building, along with internecine political intrigues and queer characters, this book is definitely for you. The last fifth of the book had me literally on the edge of my seat, and now I have to sit patiently and wait for the next one. Such a good book, highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible!!

I am speechless. The Emperor’s Bone Palace takes up right where The Prince’s Poisoned Vow left off. We’re thrown into various complex political situations and many countries preparing for war.

In the midst of this, we see Caris struggling with everything that was revealed at the end of the last book - trying to come to terms with who she is. We see Soren and Vanya working together to keep Solaria safe and Vanya on the throne. Blaine and Honovi finally reconnect.

This book is a masterpiece from start to finish. The last 30% of this book was so stressful! Non-stop action, and constantly shifting from one POV to another to add to the suspense. This book also ends on a reveal we all saw coming, and that will deeply impact the storyline of the next book.

If you love steampunk, fantasy, complex plot lines, queer characters and amazing world building, read this series! I wish I could give it more than 5💜 to show just how good this book is.

I'll admit I was a bit overwhelmed by the hefty world building in the first book but loved it anyway, and my god does it pay off in this book! I think I read the second half in almost a single sitting, so much happened and it was so well paced I couldn't stop reading. I love the characters, both the protagonists and antagonists, and as their stories all begin to intertwine the payoff is so satisfying.

Honestly this series is the best I think I've read this year, I'm obsessed.

Fast paced from the get go, great story with lots of action, adventure, romance, zombies and steam punk flying machines.... oh and Gods. All the Gods. It's taking some getting used to,the way the story jumps from character to character based on chapter but I'm getting there. If I had one complaint it would be really, Soren? Really?? I can't betray my princeling.... bad things happen like thirty seconds later.... whoops, my bad, I betrayed my princeling.... ugh.
