Something Unexpected: An MMM Small Town Romance (Split Rock Ranch Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 371 ratings

DOMINIC LAUDER never thought he’d return to Split Rock Ranch. But after twenty years, he finds himself knocking on his aunt’s door. He just wishes he was there with better news. Nick is used to making difficult calls in the name of family…except those family obligations weren’t supposed to come up against a smoking hot ranch manager, his enticing young husband, and the undeniable attraction that crackles between the three of them. Now Nick has to decide what’s more important: his responsibilities or his heart.

MICAH AVERY has always followed his heart and it’s gotten him everything he’s ever dreamed of. He’s married to his first love, his horse-training business is taking off, and life at the ranch couldn’t be better. But his perfect world is turned upside down with the arrival of Nick Lauder. Micah never expected his heart to lead him in this direction, but it hasn’t steered him wrong yet.

RYAN AVERY is still amazed by the happiness he’s found with Micah. But one thing he's learned from his husband of three years, is that anything is possible. When Nick’s arrival opens up the opportunity for some no-strings-attached fun, Ryan is on board. Then the three of them click in ways that Ryan couldn’t have anticipated, and he starts to see possibilities he’d never dreamed of. Possibilities that just need to survive Nick’s real reason for being there.

Something Unexpected is an 80k, high-heat, MMM romance with a happily established couple finding their third, absolutely no cheating, and a guaranteed HEA. It’s the second book in the Split Rock Ranch series and is best enjoyed after book one.

Rory Maxwell discovered romance novels on her mom’s bookshelf when she was probably too young to be reading them—the reward for being a nosy kid with great reading comprehension. The magic of a dial-up internet connection led her to the wonderful world of MM fanfiction a few years later and she fell in love with the genre. In 2019 she woke up with a plot bunny, opened a word doc, and started trying to figure out how this writing stuff worked.

Rory grew up outside of Washington, DC, moved away, and then came back for reasons she doesn’t fully understand. An artist and writer, she always has too many exciting ideas and not nearly enough free time. One day, she hopes to escape to the mountains where she can work from home and write as much as she wants. In the meantime, she splits her time between her day job and writing MM romance with heart, heat, and happy endings.

When I first saw the page count for this book, I was a bit hesitant about reading it. I worried that it would drag and be filled with unnecessary detail. I was so wrong! The author did an amazing job of keeping the flow going with different parts of the story taking center stage.

That meant there were lots of moving parts that some authors lose their way trying to connect. I thought it was done brilliantly here. Some may say they wanted more background on Phillip or Nick’s mom or even Maggie. I disagree.

This was a focus on Nick’s personal struggles with all the decisions he had made to lead him to the present and acceptance that these men really cared for him. What was provided about the other characters was not too much and not too little. There was a solid backbone to the that allowed the progression of Nick as a character and his growing relationship with Micah and Ryan to take center stage.

My only complaint which is just my own opinion is that I could have actually done with more of their exploration in bed. I would have liked to have seen more interactions with Nick and Micah and all three together. Again that’s a total me thing. I haven’t read the first book, but didn’t feel lost at all. Can’t wait for Finn’s story and hopefully maybe Kegan with Izzy? Recommend this one guys! I’m shocked more people haven’t read it.

It was a story that was easy to get engrossed in and I honestly didn't want to put it down. I liked the characters, as individuals and together, well written, all in all a good read.

Those who know me will expect this. I have serious difficulty with sex being presented as such a prime motivation to so many. I must be blind to something here. In any case, this is a good story with a satisfying conclusion even if I skipped dozens of pages with details that contributed little to the main plot line.

Liked this one even more than the first one. The characters are great and can’t wait to see them all ultimately get their HEAs!

I loved this book so much!! I love a good polyamorous story, and this was perfection. For me, this was escapism at its best. Found family, a great sense of place, a little drama, and some very nice steamy scenes. The polyamory in this was just so beautiful. I loved seeing how their story developed. I really fell in love with Split Rock Ranch and all the characters in this book. I enjoyed that there was enough plot and drama to keep things interesting, without being stressful. I flew through this book in a day and a half, and every time I set it down I just couldn’t wait to get back to it. I’m excited to read the next book in this series.

This was a wonderful and enchanting sequel. I was hooked chapter by chapter, always in excitement and anticipation for what was to come. Seeing Micah and Ryan and the rest of the Split Rock crew settled and happy was wonderful, and I loved the development and inclusion of Nick as time went on. The pacing was fantastic and everything moved with grace.

    Absolutely recommend this one!

3rd person, past tense, multi PoV
Dominic Lauder (34), financial manager at Lauder Financial Management
Micah Avery (25), head trainer at Split Rock Ranch
Ryan Avery (38), ranch manager at Split Rock Ranch

This story picks up three years after Something Undeniable and can be read as a standalone, though Micah and Ryan's book gives richer context for the characters and story.

Despite its length I absolutely tore through this book in almost no time at all. I'm loving this author's writing and story telling. I already loved Micah and Ryan and it was lovely to see them even more settled in their relationship and living their best ranch life. It took me a minute to warm up to Nick as he was quite guarded - with good reason - but once he loosened up he was easy to love as well. Micah and Ryan never stood a chance.

I loved that nobody got mired in what they should or shouldn't feel. Micah had some little concerns, but with great communication with Ryan and Nicky that got sorted with minimal drama. The progression of their relationship didn't feel forced, but it did feel fast. Given the length of the book I wish the relationship development had been a little more slow burn; two weeks is lightning fast for introducing a third to an established, monogamous, relationship with literally no prior conversation about doing so.

I'd have enjoyed a little more tension building between them before things boiled over and I wish Ryan had been a little more vocal with his PoV so his desire could be better felt and not merely chalked up to wanting to make his husband happy. While these three had attraction and chemistry in spades there wasn't much more in the way of relationship development to show the reader that these guys have staying power, especially since Nicky concealed his true purpose for visiting the ranch for half the book.

His small deceit is quickly swept aside, and to be honest that whole conflict had too much build up to be resolved so quickly, conveniently and easily. Still it was an entertaining plotline to get all our MCs in the same time and place and it was lovely to see Nick finally find the place where he belongs.

All the secondary characters enriched the narrative without taking the spotlight away from our heroes and I'm invested in their stories. It was fun to see everyone close ranks and come together to sort our the future of Split Rock Ranch.
