Bad Dogs (Dirty Strays Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,120 ratings

I see you, Roman. You want to fight me, and then you want to be so good for me.

We’re lost boys, wild and forgotten. Born into a world of poverty and crime, my two best friends and I have nothing to rely on except each other. But I have a plan: if I can film viral BDSM porn, I might rake in enough cash to get us out of this trailer park before we become another gang violence statistic. Kink is a rich man’s game—high-end clubs, dungeons full of toys—but maybe two dirt-poor boys with homemade gear can still compete.

First, I need a sub. I’m looking for someone perfect and obedient—until the new boy moves into town. He’s huge and silent and skittish, broken down by pain and loneliness. But when he’s cornered, he fights like an animal. An animal who desperately wants to be tamed. When I look into his eyes, the flash of submission I see there has me obsessed. When he kneels for me, both our broken worlds become whole.

Nobody believes that trailer park boys deserve a better life, that we can find happiness and build our own family. But we’re fighters, and together the four of us will find a way to be free.

An intense, emotional story about, resilience and trauma, kink, hurt/comfort, a smaller dom/larger sub, and found family. Contains some dark and difficult subject matter, please look inside the front of the book for a content advisory.

I really don't know if I can find words. Scout is an absolutely beautiful person! He takes care of everyone around him. He doesn't even realize how deeply he loves. Roman has been beaten and broken and just needs someone to love him again. Someone to put his pieces back together again. Scout does just that. And Beck and Dallas help. They have such a beautiful found family. Tubbs too!!! I'm so excited to jump into the next book, I couldn't put this one down!

I had to sit on this one overnight to think before I could write a review. Which is really odd for me as I normally write reviews right away. The best way I can describe this story is raw. It is not a happy story, although it does have a happy ending. Scout and Roman have rough lives, and it definitely shows.

I really liked the found family aspect of this book. We obviously have Scout and Roman, but Dallas and Beck play a big role as well. Seeing Roman actually open up and learn to trust these guys was wonderful. I felt the ending worked out a little too easily for everything that was involved, but all four of these guys deserved it.

This book was not as steamy as I expected. That aspect is definitely there. But most of the scenes are for their channel, and they didn't read 100% authentic, because the weren't. The BDSM aspect was a little scary. These guys are both new to the scene, and there are some big mistakes that are made. Scout does try to correct them and prevent them from happening again, but it's easy to see the damage done, especially to someone like Roman. It did add realistic element, these are mistakes anyone starting out could make if they don't have proper guidance.

This is the first book I've read by this author, and I'm definitely going to have to check out more. This story was raw and angsty, and I have a feeling this is going to be one that sticks with me. Now I have to decide if I'm going to dive right in to the next book in the series or if I'm going to be responsible and start working on the ARCs I have lined up

Bad Dogs possesses my very heart and soul. It is the epitome of perfection for me and I am emotionally bonded to Scout and Roman forever. @rileynashbooks superpower is that he writes such unique and special characters that entice you from the start and are impossible to forget. Then he has the nerve to write such a heartbreakingly beautiful story about experiencing trauma, finding your home in people you’d least expect, and kinky sexual exploration that got hotter as the book progressed. I was a goner before I finished the first page.

Scout is me in SO many ways… we share a brain and I frequently found myself anticipating what he would do next because I understood him so innately. He is unapologetic, possessive, bratty, and outgoing while carrying the happiness of his people on his shoulders. He ALWAYS ensures that Roman has a voice. He makes mistakes as he’s navigating being a (Daddy) Dom for the first time, but acknowledges them and does everything in his power to make them right. He is perfectly imperfect.

Roman. He owns me. My heart bled for him throughout this book, which led to me crying on more than one occasion. He is pure, empathetic, and cares so much about doing right by others. I felt his rage and fear as I read his story and ALL I wanted to do was protect him. The way he growls, bites, and craves being tamed consumed me. He is the absolute perfect puppy.

Tubbs. The actual main character of this story.

Dallas and Beck. The found family everyone deserves. The amount that I NEED their books is unimaginable.

    Read. This. Book.

    What I LOVED:
    🖤 The found family.
    🖤 TUBBS.
    🖤 The BITING.
    🖤 Sir/puppy
    🖤 SO much hurt/comfort

'...we’re all ghosts here, except those who manage to escape.'

Soooo... undoubtedly Riley Nash is a master of angst, the emotional scars from the Water, Air, Earth, Fire series I still carry with me. But here... here we skirted along the angst, we skirted along the romance and we skirted along the BDSM aspects of the story, that really didn't feel like it worked with Roman's trauma.

Riley's portrayal of Roman's selective mutism, was done really well. I loved how Scout's group adopted Roman, they never stumbled in accepting him talking through sign language and learning themselves so they can communicate.

“I see you, Roman. No one else does, but I do. You want to fight until you’re worn out, and then you want to be so good.”

Scout was certainly sweet and at the start was really putting effort in building trust but then steps were jumped over. I found that Scout assuming Roman was a sub and projecting that idea onto Roman, someone mentally and emotionally scarred, in a constant abuse and having to walk on eggshells through another's emotions, wasn't in the right frame of mind to look into himself and find that part of himself. Not only that, but Scout also decided on having it on camera, without even having a trial off of it.

'Is it a Dom thing to feel your sub’s fingers deep in your chest, prying it apart until—even though he’s the one kneeling and collared—you’re the one who’s humbled and broken open?'

Along those lines plus the seemingly little time that they actually spend together on practically the first half of the book, if not easily the 3/4ths we also had a romance that was at its beginning and not the ILUs that were said.

Anyways... the writing was incredible and it really showed in the best secondary characters ever, Beck and Dallas. They really were the highlight of the story!

I absolutely love a neurodiverse character representation in literature. This book was a gorgeous example of how one navigates a neurotypical environment while having a brain that works differently from the average or “neurotypical” person.
Roman might seem to you like someone worthy of pity, but to me, he felt like a slumbering giant. A beautiful boy with a greater than life soul, mourning the loss of his family and his innocence. His meek demeanour might appear as indecisiveness at first, but to me it felt like he was heavily leaning into his cerebral instincts, waiting for the right moment and the right handler to help him prepare mentally to break free from anyone or anything holding him back from seeking happiness, love, respect and acceptance🖤seeing Roman find his voice and take charge in certain situations, seeking recognition as an equal to his peers was amazing!🖤
Scout shines bright - "he’s vain and childish and unstoppable." He is the complete opposite of Roman, and yet, these two are "it" for each other from day one. Small Dom big Sub is absolutely mouth watering picture perfect and executed to perfection 🙌
I loved the size kink and the fact that they both ventured into exploring BDSM stumbling and learning every step of the way while trying to navigate through less than ideal circumstances. Scout struggles to convey his feelings to Roman and no wonder - growing up neglected in extreme poverty and struggling to survive every single day has stunned his emotional growth in favour of going inylto full on, constant survival mode - at all times he is focused on staying alive, and caring for his closest friends Beck and Dallas - his found family.
This story was addictive to read and I loved it so so so much🖤
Please check out the trigger warnings🖤

💕 A novel that captivates you from start to finish.
All Scout wants is to get him and his friends out of this trailer park and to start a fresh new life together. I love that even though Scout never knew the love and affection of a doting family, he nonetheless is a caretaker by nature.
Roman had the love and affection of his grandparents until they died. For the past 8 years, he’s been living with his older brother. Being physically and mentally abused, he lives in fear, despite now being bigger and stronger than him. On top of it all, he rarely speaks.

The story is more than just a BDSM story set in a trailer park. Is it the story of 2 men, finding a connection with each other in a messed up world of hatred, indifference and loneliness.
I love how Scout is always looking out for his friends. I love how he immediately feels the need to protect Roman. I love how he struggles in certain social settings, not knowing how to properly respond verbally and emotionally to a situation, and looks to his friend Dallas for help.

I love Roman’s immediate connection to the mastiff, with no worry that the aggressive dog could seriously injure him. In a way, Roman is like that dog. Largely neglected, chained, and only worthy of scraps. But Roman sees beyond this and with love, brings out the best in the beast. Just as with Scout’s care, he too begins to thrive.
