A Mage’s Guide to Human Familiar’s
A Mage’s Guide to Human Familiars by A J Sherwood R’iyah Family Archives series #1. M-M-M romance fantasy with mages, familiars, and swords. Bel Adams needs a new familiar and ends up calling army Ranger, Nico di Rossi who was bored, bored, bored with his regular job. Nico gladly leaves the army to be with the mage. But his training is advance deployment and needs training to stay closer to Bel so his prior lover Garen Dallarosa is borrowed from the Secret Service to train Nico to be a body guard. The three find they work effectively and efficiently together fighting magical problems. A mage getting a familiar story. But more, the story totally goes off the rails in humor and throw-away comments. I enjoy the heck out this story as humor, puns and ridiculous are totally my jam. The three do a good job of solving problems too with the help of Demon Grandpa. I can’t imagine where this will possible go, but I’m very sure it will be entertaining, romantic, and full of giggles for me. “A coffee offering. All hail the coffee offering.”

As usual under this name the author writes crazy fun books with sweet funny characters. Very interesting plots with well thought out magical twists. There are a few more graphic racy scenes than I am comfortable with but I just skip over them just like I do when reading hetero sex scenes.

Mages, and demons, and familiars, oh my!

Not a kitchen sink story, but lots of satisfying twists and turns. Bel Adams is a demon-eyed mage, valued for his deep dive analysis. His concentration when working requires the intelligence of a human familiar - one who can safeguard and protect.

His magic calls Nico di Rossi, an army ranger on active duty. They fit magically except for one teensy problem; Nico is an offensive badass. He needs training to orient to a defensive role. So, Nico calls in Garen, a former army buddy who works for the Secret Service, and has bodyguard mode down pat.

Since they all work for the government, it is relatively easy to get transfers working ( just tons of paperwork), except Garen’s boss really doesn’t want to lose him. With Bel being a first-responder mage, it should be a sure thing that his safety comes first in priority. But, he has to prove a magical link to Garen to keep him.

    Fun!

This was a great book! The main character is a mage who summons a familiar, who then adds a friend, and they all become lovers. That covers the romance side, but this book also has a fun and interesting cast of secondary characters, lots of magic, magical troubles, and fun Star Wars references. It also has a great HFN. I can’t wait to read more!

I have read this book in both Digital and Audiobook forms and both options were highly entertaining. The three characters in this book are so distint and full of their own personalities that when they come together each of them shine in their own right.

Bel has insecurities and a big sense of responsibility, Nico has massive energy and enthusiasm, and Garen has a huge protective streak and patience. These all work together to create a cohesive team for their job and a cohesive partnership within ther personal lives and budding relationship. When they all come together is is amazing in it's intensity and quite lovely and steamy.

Like a lot of this authors books there are a lot of action and humor and energy involved so that the lower steam elements aren't completly noticible, plus the tension between the characters keeps things interesting.

    For the Audiobook version:

I often find that audiobooks can push certain things about books forward when compared to reading the digital or physical versions. For some reason the pacing and vocal inflections can bring a character to life and bring different feelings into other parts of books. Also, the humor strikes me as so much funnier. The Three narrators for this books were great. They brought the characters to life and helped me understand who they are on a different level. The only thing I struggled with is that one of the narrators didn't seem to have the right sound for a character which threw me a bit because he did a great job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Fun MMM PNR
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 5, 2023
    4.5⭐

When young mage Bel, with his demonic eyes that see *everything*, summons a human familiar for the second time, Nico gets sucked across the country. Bored with his Army career and ready for a change, Nico is intrigued by being summoned as a familiar and his protective instincts kick in for Bel. But he knows he's going to need training, so he asks his old friend and ex-lover, Secret Service agent Garen to come and help.

Nico and Garen never stopped loving each other, but they could never make it work before. But now there is also Bel to consider. Could the cute yet powerful mage be just what they needed, rather than an extra complication?

This is a really fun MMM contemporary near-fantasy PNR with magical first responders battling monsters and magic and 2 veterans protecting their young mage.

I really enjoyed the contrasting characters: the highly intelligent and powerful, but anxious and previously heartbroken, Bel; the hyperactive golden retriever cinnamon roll, Nico; and the steady and protective, part Gargoyle, Garen. And I loved the way they get together as a triad.

One thing that wasn't explained in this was why they could put any trust in the magic choosing Nico, given Bel's first familiar was such a disaster.

In this you'll find: MMM PNR; 3 gay MCs; some spice; ~10 year age gap; a young mage heartbroken by being rejected by his first familiar; 2 ex-boyfriends who still love each other but couldn't make their relationship work; a former Army Ranger; a former Secret Service agent; forced proximity and only 1 bed; fated/magic chosen; quick falling in love; a sassy demon grandfather; battling ROUS and magical curses; found family; and a HEA.
