The wild calls as hearts are tamed. Love encompasses a world in unexpected and beautiful ways. Old characters take on new characteristics and new characters are brought into fierce embrace. If Buck could speak to us, he’d tell us he loves this reflection on himself.

It was wonderful to catch up with Jimmy, Oscar, and the ladies of The Angel in Return to Telegraph Creek. When the story begins, Jimmy and Oscar are settled and happy in their new home. A letter from Miss June at The Angel asking for help looking for their old friend Cal has them traveling back to Telegraph Creek. I love Jimmy and Oscar together, and it’s awesome to see growth from both of them. Jimmy is learning to forgive himself for his past, and Oscar has a lot more confidence. They’re still delightfully dirty but are also really tender and sweet with each other. The mystery is ok, but the story drags in spots, and the ending is abrupt. I appreciate Lister’s attention to detail, and overall, it’s a solid book.

One moment, cowboy Oscar kills a rabid dog with a single shot, and within weeks he’s dressed in a corset. A.E. Lister’s “Return to Telegraph Creek,” Book 3 of the Northern Horizons series, is the perfect mix of kink and warmth, historical adventure and romance. I care deeply about Oscar and his lover, Jimmy, their companions and their way of life.

While “Return to Telegraph Creek” might be read as a standalone, it would lose much of its context, and it’s been delightful to follow a couple past their initial “happily-ever-after.” Although Oscar and Jimmy have just survived a difficult winter and just built their home, they travel a full week to see their friend, cathouse owner, Irene, whose letter informs them that one of her “girls” (transgender) Cal has gone missing. During their months-long stay, readers see the value of friendship, a theme explored through increasingly deep, more meaningful sacrifices.

A.E. Lister imagines the West for LGBTQ folks, and has found hope in wide open spaces, where people might secretly explore their true selves. After all, it’s a time when neighbors must depend upon each other and civility is prized. What a lovely vacation from our era.

“The creak of wood and the swoop of runners going back and forth comforted me as much as the regular motion and the peaceful sounds of crickets and birds soothed my mind.” A.E. Lister allows us to hear the wind, feel the mosquito bite, and find solace in each nature scene, through the clarity of their words. It allowed quick transitions from tension to joy, from sadness to peace, as I felt myself inside the character’s movements. And the dialog consists of divine descriptions – direct and filled with unspoken emotion. Like when the men are deciding whether to make their trip. (And note, this is stripped of all the helpful interjections which richen the novel.)

    “Jimmy, I’m worried about Cal.”
    “Me, too.”
“Do you…do you want to go?”
“I recon I have to. But you can stay here if you want.”
“You ain’t goin’ anywhere without me, Jimmy Downing. Don’t even try.”

Jimmy and Oscar and sweet and scandalous, profane and spiritual. They must put to rest many historical demons as they assist Cal. Their profound love heals them and their friends. And I reveled in every development. Can I hope for a Book 4, maybe to highlight Carson and Tim’s story??? 4.5 stars rounded up to 5!

This series is well worth your time! Jimmy and Oscar are called upon to find Cal, a great friend that they met in the first book of the series. There is a long trek, some spicy kink, and a lot of love along the way! I highly recommend ANY AE Lister book, but this series is special!

This well-written book is a perfect blend of adventure, friendship, loyalty, passion, and enduring love. I've greatly enjoyed the first two books in the series and this one was just as good. In this story, Jimmy and Oscar are just getting settled in their new home in Port Essington when they receive a message from Miss June, the madame at The Angel, a brothel in Telegraph Creek, where Oscar received life-saving medical attention previously. Miss June asked for them to return to help locate Caliope, a trans-female sex worker, who had recently married and then fell out of touch.

Jimmy and Oscar return, experience some drama along the way, and reconnect with all of their old friends. They begin their search, but what they find is confusing at first. Can they help and get to the truth? The author does a brilliant job of capturing realistic dialogue of the era and location. The characters are well developed and delightful in their quirks. The passionate encounters between the two men are a little kinky and very demonstrative of their feelings for each other. Most of all, the love between Jimmy and Oscar is an almost tangible, beautiful thing. This series is highly recommended.

This series is pretty special, I can’t say I’ve come across a story like this before. Over the books, I’ve loved seeing Jimmy and Oscar grow as people and as a couple. Oscar has come so far and Jimmy is also changed by Oscar. They have quite a sweet connection and have made a nice life for themselves in Port Essington. The highlight for me are the friendships they’ve made along the way. How supportive they are and how they’ve banned together to try and keep each other safe. I enjoyed the ending, their homecoming after helping Cal and Miss June was wonderful and a bit emotional. If I’m being picky, I would have loved an epilogue set maybe a few years in the future, but an excellent read.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

The overall story of this series is heartwarming and there are so many side stories and interesting characters that it’s hard for me to know what to focus on in a review. I adore all of it. Jimmy and Oscar are still main characters in this volume but the story of what has happened to Caliope is the main thread along with how everyone back at The Angel is doing. Wild West adventures happen along with things that unfortunately still go on today. The detail that AE Lister brings into the book adds so much to the story that you feel immersed in the old west. Jimmy and Oscar get up to their usual shenanigans and Lister even finds time and things for them to get up to in The Angel while still making it feel historically appropriate. I am glad to hear that there will be a follow up story because I’m shurly gonna miss these characters.
