Wow. I mean...just...wow. I've looked forward to this book since I finished Book 6. I didn't reread the entire series this time. I just jumped feet-first into something I had almost forgotten was about to happen. I honestly don't know whether rereading would have helped or not. Cypress Ashes is...well...it was hard to read. Don't get me wrong: I loved this last San Amaro Investigations series book. But I hated it too. As emotionally invested as I was in every page, it kept me in constant dread and burgeoning despair. I'm not gonna lie: I almost didn't want to read it since the overall tension and emotional upheaval was well nigh unbearable.
Will everyone else have this same reaction? I don't know, but I do know that I would have missed the beautiful job the author did tying everything together from previous books and having it culminate into a finale that left me crushed and exhausted as I came to terms with what these characters (and myself) experienced. And that would be a shame. I felt like I was there with them, in their minds and hearts, as they traversed this beautiful and flawed world created with such intricate detail that I could see it all in my mind. I absolutely adore it when I'm pulled from my life and into someone else's like this. I didn't stop and think, huh, this is a book, and these are characters. No. They were San Amaro, the Far Realm, Parker, Nick, and all the other people and beings I've come to love and hate. I feel like I'm overdoing this, but I can't explain in a shorter form how very much this affected me.
So, without spoilers, I want to say that this was one of the best angst-inducing books I've had the pleasure and displeasure to read.
Now, Parker has changed over the series. Not overwhelmingly so, but in small ways that show how having positive relationships can affect a person's outlook and interactions with others. There are still recognizable parts of the old Parker to be seen, but his character development, out of all the others, is the most noticeable. I especially liked seeing Parker clumsily trying to be friends when he didn't know how to do it. He's come a long way since the first book. We see apparent signs of change in the other characters, too. Nick and Sugar come to mind right off. And Oh. My. God. I am repressing all urges to write about Nick because...spoilers. He troubled me throughout this book.
The storyline flowed from scene to scene, helped along by perfectly placed secondary characters whose time was well spent on the pages. And as I said previously, the author did a beautiful job with tying up the trailing plot strings from previous books and threw all the emotional highs and lows between them.
I didn't really want to write this review because I didn't want anyone to misunderstand my impression of the piece. But here it is anyway. It ended up being a love/hate thing for me.
Finally, I don't know if I will have the same reaction the next time I read this...but I will enjoy finding out.
I look forward to more from this author.

So, by the end of Saffron Wilds there was clearly a monumental showdown brewing on the horizon. But did you think that all Team Parker had left to do was to show up and battle it out? If so, you were wrong. So, *so* wrong.

This is not a case of our favorite paranormal PI accidentally getting into trouble and dragging his whole family into it. In Cypress Ashes, the trouble has already found him and it's a waiting game until the last battle for everything. In the background, the tensions in the city are building, war preparations are going full steam ahead, and the oppressive feeling of too little time, too few choices left, and walls closing in on every side grows stronger and stronger. So now, with San Amaro under martial law, Parker has to gather his allies, evacuate the city, and figure out a way to kill a god while trying to evade the military weirdly obsessed with locking him up.

    Easy-peasy. Or not.

I was wondering how this whole debacle would end, and I have to say, daaaamn, I did not see *that* coming. There were so many surprises left in store for Parker & co. that I can't help but be amazed by the author's never-ending supply of plot twists. Surprises only for the characters and readers though, because it's quite obvious the whole overreaching story arc was meticulously plotted. Everything in the series so far has been leading up to this, it's very much NOT the case of an author writing themselves into a corner and fixing impossible situations with irritating deus ex machina solutions and swaggering guys who win the day in the end. The characters and their relationships have been changing and growing throughout the series to make this final story and its outcome possible. It's most obvious for Parker. As Laurel puts it at some point: "Last year, I couldn't even get you to sign up for a library card because you said it was too much commitment. Now here you are, leading the rebellion."

But the important thing is, all that growth, new responsibilities and obligations did not strip away the parts that make Parker himself. So when it's time for sacrifices and hard decisions, every single one of them is still exactly what we came to expect from him. The same goes for the rest of the crew. Awesome character development all around.

All in all, it's a super satisfying, fitting conclusion to this brilliantly written series. I'm very glad that 2 years ago I let myself be talked into trying a new author and started reading Parker's story. It was a really fun journey and I enjoyed every minute of it. Highly recommended for fans of urban fantasy with strong world building and lovable characters.

Btw, that's a strong 4.5, I just didn't round up because even though the story was good it lack that balance between humor, romance and drama that the other stories in the series contained. But it's still worth reading just be prepared because it is truly action packed with little to no break from all your feelings that this book evoke. I don't know how I thought the finale to go but it definitely wasn't this and now that I know the ending I may go back and re-read the entire series again. This really is a great book and I have enjoyed reading about Parker Ferro and Nicholas King and all the other characters Ms. Butler created in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars So sad to say goodbye to San Amaro !

I loved these books so much ! I waited to read the last one because I didn't want it to be over. So I read everything back from the beginning and I still love it as much, and this one did not disappoint !

The world building is still amazing and I adore the characters, I'm so sad we won't see them again. Most of the previous players were back and had a role to play, the story really tied in a lot of threads. It's a great last book, and while it's always bittersweet to let go of a beloved imaginary world I am happy with the ending.

The only little point is that I would have loved to see more of Talon and Hollin. The dark prince who awkwardly wanted to be friends with Parker was one of my favorite secondary character and I feel like we don't know that much about him and his realm.

Anyway, this book was a great last stand for Parker and Nick and if you liked the start of the series you can't miss it !

I recommend all the 7 books (to be read in order !).

I'm so glad I stumbed onto this series. Each book focuses on the story directly, whilst building the world around it. I've read so many books where 90% of the dialogue is the main character talking about how good looking their partner or someone who's going to end up at their partner is. Yes, the series does have its spicy moments, but it fits well within the story, rather than something that is just put their for a "sex scene". I absolutely cannot wait for what Kai Butler has in store for us in future novel series.
