Garbage: An MM Robot Romance (The SPARK Files Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 283 ratings

Evan isn’t brave.

But when he hears a group of Human Firsters attacking a humanoid garbage collection bot, he has to step in. He rescues an undiscovered SPARK, a self-aware android who’s never experienced life outside of his collection route and the miserable, gray trash depot.

Evan wants to help. But he might have underestimated just how cute Quincy can be. Or just how difficult it would be living with a sexy android who’s exactly his type. But if Evan couldn’t get his crappy exes to stick around, how could he ever capture Quincy’s interest?

Quincy loves flowers growing in sidewalk cracks. And making food in Evan’s kitchen, even though he can’t eat it. Oh, and jokes. Quincy loves jokes. He’s kind of even getting good at them.

Most of all, he loves Evan.

As Quincy settles into his new life, he can't escape from prejudice against SPARKs. Evan is everything he wants, if only he can stay off the Human Firsters’ radar long enough to win his love.

Garbage is a hurt/comfort story with a cuddliest android you’ve ever met and a sweet, submissive man who wishes he were good enough to deserve him. It has sloth jokes, a kidnapping, an android trying to figure out humanity (and paperclips!), body positivity, and kinky fun with some extra robot appendages…

Note: Trigger warnings for hate speech, on-page assault, and body shaming (with all of the support, humor, complexity, and acceptance you'd expect from a Reese book!)

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Reese Morrison lives in Philadelphia with their partner, two precocious children, and intermittent housemates, guests, and homeless, queer teens. Their hobbies are volunteering on too many boards, planting gardens that they forget to water half-way through the summer, making up songs for their kids, and doing math-y things as a freelancer.

Reese and their partner both identify as genderqueer and are part of a vibrant community of queer and trans folks. They started writing because they were dissatisfied with the lack of trans and genderqueer characters in what they were reading and finally decided to do something about it. Many, but not all, of their books are kinky (for a whole range of kinks...) and they feel that it's important to represent a range of backgrounds, dis/abilities, gender presentations/identities, and body types in their writing.

My fellow readers, you may be wondering what all is a "robot romance" and if it would be your thing. Trust me, it will be after reading this book! Especially if you enjoy shifter and/or alien MM romances, give this story a try. And if you, like me, adored the sci-fi romance movie WALL-E, prepare to be swept off your feet.

It's been a long time since I've been so completely enchanted by a book. Robot love? Endearing AF androids? Say what you will about sentient AI in the real world, but in Romancelandia, I am so here for it. But this book is so much more than that too.

I grinned like a loon the whole time I was reading (well, minus the heart-in-my-throat bits!). Could sweetly naive former-android-turned-spark Quincy be any more adorable? Or shy human Evan, for that matter? (Those are rhetorical questions, the answers are big ol' nopes.)

This author continually impresses me with the inclusiveness of the worlds they create (can I please live there?), unique and complex characters, and lovingly romantic stories that solidly hit all the feels. This love story is utterly charming, endearing, unique, hopeful, heartfelt...and hot!

Who knew androids could be so spicy? And k¡nky? Honestly, MY circuit boards were overheating! Credit to the author for making tech talk sound so steamy.

This is by far my favorite read of the year, and I cannot wait to continue this series. Bring on more robot love!

I really enjoy Reese Morrison writing, it always brings the perfect balance of emotions and steam with a bit of kink. I was slightly nervous because I've only attempted to read one book with a human × android relationship and I DnFd it because it was creepy but Om Em Gee Quincy was everything but creepy. Q was adorable and precious and I wanted all the good things for him . Q and Evans relationship was the sweetest . I loved Q discovering pleasure and how to be the perfect Dom for Evan.

I'd never read a robot romance before, but have enjoyed all the Reese Morrison books I've read. This one was no exception, with many of the elements I'd expect to find, but also some that caught me off guard.

After Evan saved Quincy from an attack, he realized he was a Spark, or a robot that has become sentient after something causes a spark that brings them to life. Quincy was infinitely curious and so adorably excitable. Theirs was more of a slow burn, as Evan was afraid Quincy would lose interest later on, and Quincy had his own worries about being what Evan needed. When they were finally on the same page, it was detailed and sexy.

The world building was well-done, and sets things up for the rest of the series. My favorite element of this was the way Quincy's thoughts would show what was happening and the processes he was going through. It really brought him to life, but also drove home the fact that his body was not human. There was more action and external angst than I was expecting, and I couldn't put the book down!

I loved just about everything about this book. It was well-written, sweet and spicy, and had a good level of action and suspense. There was a bit of kink (though I'd love to see a bonus scene with more), and things end with an HEA for Quincy and Evan, but a bit of a cliffhanger for what comes next. Being patient will be so difficult...

Holy snaps. Seriously. Omfg. This was just... WOW. Can't even words right now but literally HAD to review it immediately.

This was absolutely amazing in every way and I really don't think anyone but Reese Morrison could pull it off so well. So many emotions and thoughts expressed so naturally I almost don't believe that an actual Spark didn't help write this book.

Quincy was utterly adorable and so full of life and excitement. I wasn't sold on the BDSM aspect just reading the blurb but amazingly it fit, and fit PERFECTLY. How Morrison turned this hulking sanitation android first into a bouncy puppy, then into an excitable gender fluid or possibly non binary practically person, then into a teasing sadist Dom is mind boggling but IT WORKED. Ill have to read this a dozen more times to see if I can figure out the trick.

TRIGGER WARNINGS. Read them. Seriously. Because as sweet and funny and sexy as this story was the triggers are very real and descriptive enough that even if you don't trigger that easily you might still be triggered. I adored this book but the darkest parts were unfortunately realistic enough to make me kind of hate humans.

10000000 times would I recommend this. It was brilliantly crafted and I am actually stunned that a person was actually able to create something like this. A billion stars!

Reese Morrison is a Master Storyteller. They have a way of getting the reader into each characters' deepest thoughts and emotions, and when you finally set the book down, you are emotionally exhausted (in the best possible way) after the exhilarating ride through laughter, tears, insecurities, anger, and so much unconditional, accepting love.

Though this is a story of a sentient robot, it is far too real of a human story that plays out over and over for anyone viewed as "different" from what has been called the norm.

Don't let the robot/sci-fi nature put you off. This is a love story...romantic, friendship, sexual...beautifully written.

If you haven't read Reese Morrison yet, give this one a try. I also recommend their Love Language series very highly. If you have read their books but are on the fence because you are unsure about a robot romance...trust your author. They wrote another unbelievably awesome relationship that will entrance you immediately. :) Ren

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this but I was very intrigued by the blurb. It turned out to be a very good and entertaining story. I enjoyed Evan & Quincy's story even when it took a little bit of a turn towards more spicy. I can't wait to get to Ben's story next.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling characters and story
Reviewed in Canada on July 29, 2023
Quincy has to be one of the most compelling characters that I have read lately and he is a robot. The idea of robots becoming sentient isn’t new but Reese Morrison does a terrific job of making it new and not just by adding romance. Oh the romance! Talk about slow burn! Quincy has to become more human before romance comes into the equation and that is why this garbage robot to romantic partner story works so well. I have no idea if we will ever get to the point where we get what Ms. Morrison has labeled “sparks” or robots that become that little bit extra but I was able to believe the way this story has taken this idea. I really wasn’t sure about it because I don’t read much robot romance but I usually love Ms. Morrison’s writing so I tried it and I’m happy that I did and I can’t wait to see where she takes this future of hers.

    Fantastic.
If you’d told me yesterday I’d cry over the hardship of an android, I might have laughed.

But I did cry and this was such a lovely lovestory.

Aww a sweet romance as Quincy explores what it means to be alive. I’m going to pay more attention to and take more joy in flowering weeds in pavement cracks now. This story left me smiling. Engaging lighthearted romance with some angst. Easy read.

When Reese mentioned they were writing a robot romance I was interested but definitely outside my comfort zone. The intriguing premise of a sentient robot and the sweet submissive who rescues him, along with my trust of Reese's writing led me to trying my first robot romance. I'm so glad I did! Full of hurt/comfort, two cuties falling in love, intriguing world building, tough concepts handled well, and a beautiful love story, with steam.

Garbage was the perfect mix of sweet and spicy. I absolutely LOVED Quincy. He was such a sweetheart. I wish there were more sweet, date-like scenes though. I feel like all the romantic scenes were spicy too, and I would've liked to see Evan take Quincy out on a date night. Even so, I loved everything else about this story.
