Where They Belong (Haverstall Mountain Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 156 ratings

If they can’t put the past behind them, they won’t have any future.

Mason Hayes has a problem. A big one. Surprisingly, it’s not the death threats that have become increasingly serious since he turned his legacy Colorado cattle ranch into a wild horse sanctuary. No. It’s far worse. It’s
torture in the form of one rugged cowboy turned personal bodyguard hired to be his shadow. A boy he loved now all grown-up gorgeous man. The one he’s never been able to forget.

Colt Stonebraker has a problem. Not only is he back at the ranch where his and his brothers’ whole lives were upended, but now he’s been hired to protect the same man who broke his young heart. With too many suspects out to get Mason, Colt won’t turn his back on him—like Mason had done to him—but that doesn’t mean he has to like it. Colt is there to do a job, and as soon as it’s done, he’s gone. So, what if being back at the ranch brings up all his youthful dreams and unwise temptation? It’s not like he’s going to fall for Mason again . . . right?

The ranch owner needs a bodyguard...the death threats kept coming, so Mason is in need of protection, who is a temptation from his past.
Mason Colorado ranch owner, hazel eyes, wheat blonde hair, lean muscled and broad shoulders, switched from cattle to horse rescue. He has three sisters, some work the ranch, too.
Colt, (on the cover) short dark hair, blue eyes, and stocky, is in the security business he and his brothers, We and Levi, run. They lived at Haverstall Mountain Ranch, his Mom and teen brothers twenty years ago, after his Dad's death. That's where he met Mason and fell in love.
Now, they're men and Mason needs help. His humane and esc land attitude of ranching has made some folks angry, and their hateful response was destructive.
Sheriff Nick assigns Colt's security business to protect Mason and the ranch. The death threats are real.
We get a steady paced tale, deep emotions, fabulous descriptions, past hurts, anger, and the powerful need to protect. As the security team, Wes, Levi and Colt beef up the ranch with more cameras, tech and
diligence. With all of that, the vandals and threats continue. They find some answers, but we still have more questions, and the destruction escalates to a near death.
Meanwhile, Mason and Colt finally tell each other their truth and both men had been set up. Each man's
feelings are still the same, real and deep, plus the sexy times were explosive and hot. Both are all in and not backing down.
We then get more twists in the plot, more tension and worry.
Our epilogue wraps up loose ends and settles our worries.
It's a gripping story, well done right from the start, with the perfect amount of suspense, action and love.
    ENJOY !

While I enjoyed some aspects of this romance, the mystery part of the plot didn’t entirely work for me.

Hurt/comfort is my favorite trope, and that’s one of the tropes here, along with second chance romance. All of Mason’s troubles leave him in need of lots of support, and no matter how much he tries to at first, Colt can’t resist stepping in to comfort Mason every time he falls apart. The second chance part of the storyline is much slower to unfold, since Mason and Colt avoid clearing the air about their past for almost half the book. Only then do the two of them realize that they never actually betrayed each other, which paves the way for them to rekindle their relationship.

So, the romance was slow burn, but I enjoyed Mason and Colt as a couple. However, I never really bought into the mystery part of the novel. It just seemed unlikely that a rancher would have so many enemies, and the motivation for the murder plot seemed very weak to me.

Although this book didn’t entirely work for me, I’m interested in some of the book’s other characters—Colt’s brothers and Nick the sheriff. I’ll probably give the next book in the series a try as well.

This review is based on a complimentary advanced reader copy; all opinions are my own.

My review is a tiiidbit spoilery. Honestly nothing major, but if you don't like spoilers at all even tiny ones, you may want to skip this and go get the book. Bottom line is it was really good, both in term of romance and external conflict. And the descriptions and horses? *chef kiss*. Almost made me want to go and pet a horse even though I'm scared of them.

The first chapter was the angstiest and it really broke my heart, but I'm so glad it was the "worst" part for them. I mean, sure I wanted to shake them and scream at them to talk to each other already, but once they do, they actually communicate. And I really loved that the 3rd act conflict wasn't a break-up. Yay for no break-up 3rd act conflict, we need more of those in romances!

That being said, it doesn't mean at all that the second part of the book was boring. Actually it was The Best Part for me. That external conflict and the escalation were so riveting. Did I know who did it as soon as they were introduced? Yep, but LC had so many twists and turns before we reach the end anyway. And honestly she made me doubt a few times. Maybe I was wrong all along and it was someone else I hadn't thought about? Once it escalated in the second half of the book I just couldn't put it down.

My only... "downside" is the epilogue, but it's a me thing. It's just super sweet and I generally don't enjoy super sweet epilogues. I know they're a lot of readers favorite though.

The secondary characters were awesome, and a lot of potential other couples were introduced, which is always fun in series. I'll definitely pick up book 2 as soon as it's out because I'm pretty sure I know who's story it'll be and I just cannot wait! The siblings relationship are really great to witness as well, even though I wish we had seen Katie and Trina a bit more. The brothers though? They're really good characters, both individually and in their relationship with each other. And the horses. The horses!! I know I already mentionned them, but they're important to the story. And they're horses, who doesn't love animals in books?

I had a really good time with this book. I was a bit worried it would be super angsty (looking at you Pickup Men) but it was more external conflict than personal angst for a lot of it and the balance between action and romance was just right for my taste. It was nice to read about out and proud gay cowboys and the conflict not being about that at all.

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews. It didn't influence my review in any way.
