Sleight of Hand (The Kings: Wild Cards Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 1,879 ratings

Former Special Forces Green Beret, Sacha “Joker” Wilder, is well-versed on the subject of demolitions. As a silent partner of Four Kings Security, Joker spends his days working alongside his brothers-in-arms and his best boy, Chip—a bomb-sniffing Belgian Malinois with sass. Years of military and private security experience have prepared Joker for almost anything, except the explosive attraction between him and Giovanni Galanos.

When Gio returns from his travels abroad, everyone is charmed by the handsome billionaire philanthropist, but in Joker’s experience, anyone who’s too good to be true usually is. Gio is hiding something, but the more time Joker spends around Gio, the more his walls start crumbling, leaving him exposed and at risk of losing his heart, something he swore he would never do. Love is for suckers, and that’s not him.

For years Gio has dedicated his life to his charity work, helping people around the globe, but when things go horribly wrong during one particular trip, Gio decides it’s time to come home for good. The desire for family, and a certain ex-Green Beret with a chip on his shoulder, has Gio eager to restart his life Stateside. For all of Sacha’s blustering and griping, no one makes Gio feel safer. If only Sacha could see how right they are for each other.

Danger lurks in the shadows as someone sets their sights on Gio, and secrets are forced into the light. If Gio and Joker are to have any kind of future together, they’ll have to face difficult truths, because where love is concerned, it’ll take more than sleight of hand to make things work.

    4.5 stars

This book is the perfect comfort read. It's sweet and endearing, with a bit of action and sass (mostly from a certain dog..). Joker and Gio have been circling around each other for a WHILE now so getting to see them finally find their HEA was fun. They know each other in a way and they sure know OF each other especially once Gio finally returns to Florida from his endless travels. Being Laz's older brother means he spends a lot of time with the Kings so it's impossible to really avoid each other, well, there's only one doing the avoiding - Joker - with Gio doing his best to lure him in.

Giovanni "Gio" Galanos knows what he wants. He wants Joker (or Sacha as he insists on calling him). There is simply something about him that appeals to Gio in a deeper level. His desire towards him has a few layers. There's the confident Gio seeing exactly the kind of guy he carves and the more vulnerable Gio looking for safe and comfort he believe he can only find in Sacha's arms. He might put up a front of the rich and capable guy, but underneath it, there is someone who is still struggling with what happened to him a year ago in a far away continent.

Sacha “Joker” Wilder doesn't know how to keep away from Gio. Whenever he is around he just feels like he should be putting a distance though truthfully his feelings get VERY confusing when he starts to spend more time with the guy. It also doesn't help that Gio is Chip's favorite human. Chip being Joker's Belgian Malinios or not so silent partner at Four Kings Security.

When there seems to be a security treat to Gio's life Joker starts to take things into his own hands. Well, he TRIES at first to stay away (while making sure Gio is secured) but it doesn't last for long and when they finally share a kiss it's obvious for both the next moves are inevitable. With the risk to his life Gio finds himself revealing (not so eagerly) what happened in Sri Lanka a year ago. This also changes the dynamics between the two when both Gio and Joker realize the implications of what happened there and what Gio needs to be more aware of now.

It isn't easy for Gio to show his weakness to Joker as well as his brother (and the rest of the guys). But he also knows deep down that the person who makes him safe is Joker, as long as he has him by his side he doesn't have to feel alone and scared. It doesn't change the past or the present but it sure helps.

I liked seeing the multidimensional sides of Gio. He was strong and capable, rich by his own rights (though I didn't understand exactly how..) always striving to help others less fortunate. He was also loving and compassionate, sweet and funny in a dorky way. It was impossible not to see what anyone - but especially Joker - would find in him. That's without mentioning the strong connection Gio and Chip shared. Joker wasn't sure how a guy like Gio could be "real", not hiding some awful truth. He had his experiences with THOSE kind. But seeing Gio, getting to know him, especially his more vulnerable sides made him realize that's simply who Gio is - someone who SEES Joker for who he is and accepts him. This isn't something he ever thought would be possible especially not for someone with Gio's status and fortune.

There's a bit more to this book with A LOT more of the guys from the previous books - this is most definitely NOT a standalone novel. It was fun getting all of them. It's been a while, you know? Makes me wish I could go back to a few of the books. There's also A LOT of dog shenanigans so if you're into VERY talkative and expressive canines this book would be THE THING for you. I prefer mine expressive for sure not not THAT talkative truth being told hehe.

This book was cuteness. Which is something that could be said for most if not ALL of Charlie's books. It could be criticism but it's also "what it is" - There's a lot of cheese in Charlie's books - take it or leave it. I enjoyed this one even if I wouldn't say these guys feel THAT realistic (especially as ex-military). Also one thing I feel kind of iffy about is the lack of diverse coupling. They can't ALL be gay (or bi who chose a gay partner).

At the very end Charlie gives us a little snippet into a new series I'm looking forward to reading. Wonder what and if it means anything about this one. From what I know there's at least another one promised a LONG while ago and a hint of another couple mentioned near the end of this book. It's fine. I'm patient. I'm also waiting for THIRDS/TIN to return to us! There is something about these endearing books. Sometimes it's exactly what the doctor would prescribe.

I loved Joker and Gio’s story. As usual, they seem unlikely on the surface, but in truth fit together perfectly. Also like usual, the four legged brigade stole the show. BUT, the story tried too hard to fit in the same formula as the others as well as avoiding overlapping time frames, so it feels like the true beginnings of their story isn’t there (though the bonus scene linked at the end helps somewhat) and we’re missing a few steps in their journey. That’s really my only reason for four stars instead of five. I’m looking forward to the next Four Kings spin-off teased at the end and hope we get to keep up with all these guys.

*I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review*

Where do I start with the amazing Sleight of Hand? Joker and Gio are everything and more than I had hoped they would be to wrap up The Four Kings Universe which includes the Four Kings Security and Four Kings: Wild Cards series.

I must first say Chip steals the book and is absolutely hilarious in the perfect spots and the perfect working dog that always gets his bad guy. Chip brings in hilarity just when my heart needed it to recover from the heartbreak and tears this book gave me at times. Chip is the best goodest boy and knows it and shows why he is throughout the book.

We see all our beloved Four Kings and Wild Cards men and we finally really get to know the elusive Gio. Both Joker and Gio are strong men with a lot of trauma and heartbreak to work through before they trust in love.

I literally cried more than a few times as I learned about Gio and what finally brought him home for good and about Joker and everything in his life that caused him to be the man he is today. Both men have had life kick them around a few times that gave them realistic and understandable trust issues.

Joker and Gio are absolutely perfect for each other and give each other strength and love when they need it. They are stubborn, strong, loyal, passionate men that love fiercely when they allow people into their inner circles.

Sleight of Hand has made family, found love, loyalty, laughter, betrayal, funny dog antics and so much happily ever after. It is the perfect conclusion for the beloved Green Berets in the Four Kings Security and Four Kings: Wild Cards Charlie's fans have come to know and love.

First, I love this universe. The Kings & their family have made me laugh & cry for the last few years. Second, you really should read the other books before reading this one. Learning about Joker & Gio before reading their book is very helpful. I loved their story. Sleight of Hand made me laugh & cry just as much as the others. I have been waiting for their story & the build up did not disappoint. I should also say that this is Chip's book also. After all he is Joker's best furry friend. Sacha "Joker" Wilder has become one of my favorite Kings/Wild Cards. Sarcastic, smart, foul mouthed, and loyal. He has always been the most skeptical of the Kings. We finally get more of his backstory & find out why he is that way. Giovanni Galanos is a billionaire philanthropist who has been traveling the world doing nothing but good with all of his charities. Something happens that causes him to move back home to his brother & friends. These two have been like oil & water from the first time Joker heard Gio's voice. Gio chips away at the wall that Joker has built. Joker is able to break down the wall that Gio has built to protect his brother & friends from what happened to him. I have actually read this twice already & will be reading all of the books again soon. Also if you haven't listened to these books, it is a must. Enjoy!

Thank you so much, Charlie! I loved Sacha and Gio, and Chip of course 😍
The story is beautiful, it makes us laugh and cry... it has hot scenes and for me, the most important thing is the intimate touch scenes that happen between them.
I would like to see their wedding... ❤

And I'm looking forward to the next book, even more so with this ending.
I also want the book of the Saint... this one promises. ❤

People, the book is beautiful, with that world that only Charlie can create, with friends, family, and hot, passionate men!

Sasha 'Joker' Wilder is a former Special Forces Green Beret demolition expert who is a silent partner with Four Kings Security. His best friend is a bomb-sniffing dog named Chip.

He finds himself with an explosive attraction to Giovanni 'Gio' Galanos the older brother of his Brother-in-arms Red's boyfriend Laz.

Gio is a billionaire philanthropist who travels the world helping those in need. He has now decided to stay stateside so he can spend more time with his brother. On the plus side, he can also work on his attraction to Joker.

Joker doesn't believe in love and can only count on his dog and his brothers-in-arms. Joker fights tooth-and-nail against his attraction to Gio. Even though his dog turns against him and likes Gio.

When Gio's life is threatened, Joker works hard to eliminate the threat. When a serious health condition is discovered it brings Gio and Joker closer together.

All members of the King Security Group are involved in this story, each highlighting their specific work ethic. Chip is also a big part of Joker's life and everyone he comes into contact with.

Joker"a love story is a great addition to the King Security series and my personal favourite.

I've read the four kings security books a couple of times and am now listening to them on audio book as well, they are my go to easy reading set of stories, I didnt realise that there was a spin off until recently and eagerly read all three books in the set. I love every single story, they make me laugh and cry. Love the whole team/family dynamic, was waiting for Gio and Jokers story and wasn't dissapointed, can't wait to read the runaway groom series and hope Saint gets his own story as well. These books make me happy and wish that I had a group of men like them in my life.
They are well written books that have great storyline and a lovely easy flow to them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great ending to an overall AMAZING series!
Reviewed in Germany on July 7, 2021
The “Four Kings Security” is by far my most favorite series of all time and Gio and Joker’s story was the one I awaited the most even before they were considered to be a couple. We got hint after hint since Lucky’s book and with “Sleight of Hand” we finally get their romance story.

I have to say, I was really surprised with both of them – like Joker I thought Gio was that perfect, charming and controlling guy but as it turned out, I was wrong. The same happened with Joker as I thought he was grumpy, serious and a serial flirt and I couldn’t have been more wrong with him. Sure, in a way they are all that but here you will get to know a whole different side of them.

Personally, I loved how their relationship wasn’t one-sided, that they both gave something to other one and got something in return as well. Before that I feared that Gio might be the guy that has to support Joker throughout the book since he was always the one who had a problem with Gio, not the other way around. But thankfully that wasn’t the case AT ALL. Sure, Gio helped Joker to see that he is worth to be loved and cared for but Joker did the exact same thing for Gio. Their imperfection was the reason they finally found each other and whilst love doesn’t cure their problems and issues, it’s something that helped them finding (Joker) and accepting (Gio) themselves.

I have to admit though that the crime background story wasn’t anything special and sometimes I even forgot there was one in the first place lol. Would I have liked to have more about that part of the book? Sure, but at the same time, I was really happy to have more focus on their romance story since it was the part I was looking forward to the most. Oh, and don’t forget Chip – the star of the book! :D

Great story, great characters, great romance – highly recommended!
