Blue Skies: A low angst, age gap, hurt-comfort M/M romance Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 191 ratings

Blue Skies is a low angst, age gap, one bed, hurt/comfort novel featuring an HIV-positive, asexual flight attendant with trust issues and a closeted flight instructor.

As a sex-positive asexual man with HIV, Greg's been told it's just too complicated to be in a relationship with him. His latest boyfriend turns out to yet another in a long line of guys who say they understand asexuality only to put pressure on him to perform. Six months later, still despondent over this latest betrayal, Greg doesn't have any expectations when he joins his friends at their favorite West Hollywood club. Meeting a sexy silver fox was definitely not on the agenda, nor was wanting to get to know the man better, but unfortunately, Holden's leaving the next morning for the East Coast. As a flight attendant, Greg's schedule has him out of town the following week. Regretfully, they trade phone numbers and part ways.

Holden has been in the closet his entire life. First with his conservative parents, then in the Navy, and now as an employee of a military contractor. It's safer pretending to be straight. The only time Holden steps out of the closet is when he's on a business trip. Quickies and hook-ups have been the name of the game for him for nearly thirty years. Now nearly fifty, Holden's getting tired of it, but only has a few more years before he can live his life on his own terms. Then he goes to Neon and meets Greg. Even after Greg refuses to go back to Holden's hotel room and they part ways, he can't stop thinking about Greg and wishing he'd been able to say yes to dinner the following night. But then Greg doesn't call or text him, so Holden figures the invite was just a way to let the old guy down easy.

A week later, Holden's got a meeting in Denver, and who shows up as part of the flight crew? It's Greg, who takes one look at Holden and...if looks could kill, Holden would be a smoldering pile of ash. Undaunted, Holden tries to talk to Greg during the flight only to be shut down and told to return to his seat. But fate has a different idea.

Marie Sinclair is a queer (agender/pan) writer living in San Francisco, and prefers she/they pronouns. Her focus is on contemporary romance, usually on the steamy side. While HEAs are guaranteed, it will always take some work for the couples to get there, and it might not look the way they expected at the beginning. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, Marie believes in rooting her stories in the real world of queer culture and showing how love can survive even in challenging times. Her first book, A Kind of Forever, was nominated for two Goodreads Readers’ Choice awards, and her third, Forever After, is a 2023 Lambda Literary Award finalist in Gay Romance.

This book had me hooked from the first few pages. The characters are amazingly written and the story itself will draw you in and not let go.

I’m a voracious reader, and I currently average about 6-8 MM romances a week. I rarely come across a romance involving asexual MCs; and it is so refreshing to read a romance involving a nuanced asexual MC after so many blah insta-lust, inst-hookup novels this week. I discovered this novel and this author via a recent asexual romance promo via a couple of MM authors’ newsletters. I’m generally not a fan of age gap romances, but this one—a 48 year old and a mature guy in his 30s didn’t seem like an imbalance. The romance was lovely; and the sexy times felt genuine. An earlier misunderstanding scene was not one of those stupid misunderstandings; and the MCs make an effort to communicate with each other, even when the topics were difficult to raise. Two main negatives for me. First, the many references to other characters’ relationships or lack thereof, not just once in passing (to give some info about an MC’s friends) but a clear attempt to direct the reader to read the other characters’ novels—I dislike that plot devise by authors as it gets annoying. Second, the speed by which the MCs declared I love you’s with each other was surprising and a bit jarring, seemingly out of character in the context of this relationship.

This is a story about Greg, a flight attendant in his thirties with a history of bad relationships who also happens to be ace and HIV positive. He's been burnt so often, trust comes hard for him. And Holden, a closeted gay man in his fifties whose never been in a relationship.

It's the story of how they meet, how they learn to trust, how they allow each other to be everything they are.

As someone who is ace, I appreciated the depictions of Greg’s sexuality which rang so true for me.

It's a well-told, gentle, touching love story which I highly recommend.

    4.5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨

I really enjoyed this emotionally charged read, this is only my second novel by Marie Sinclair and it definitely won't be my last.

I really connected with Greg and Holden and I loved the way their relationship built, quickly but deeply.

My heart hurt at times for what Greg had been through and the way previous men had treated him and to get HIV the way he did, that made me so angry that someone could do that to another person and then behave the way they did. Greg's asexuality was interesting to explore, I find it interesting how different individual experiences are and I really like being able to see different aspects of sexuality portrayed.

I loved Holden and felt for him that he had spent 30 years hiding who he was. I loved his connection with Greg, Greg really couldn't have found himself a more perfect guy and the way he checked in with Greg making sure what they were doing was okay, the way he was able to read Greg even when he was trying hard to hide what he was thinking or feeling, I loved how willing he was to learn what Greg's sexuality meant for him and how genuine they both were when they were together and willing to open up and be vulnerable.

I have worked with people like Holden's colleague and it makes for an uncomfortable working environment, people who are bigoted seem to get even greater satisfaction if they know they are affecting you in some way.

I really didn't want to put this book down and read way past my bedtime to find out how Greg and Holden were able to make their situation work and see them get their HEA.

Quick Take: This is a cute book about two men who both feel unlovable for different reasons. Greg is a 33 year old asexual, HIV positive flight attendant and Holden is a 48 year old ex-military man who currently works as a government contractor who must remain closeted due to his employment situation. The author did a good job of educating the reader on what it means to be asexual but still sex positive.

How it made me feel: This was a quick, easy read, but it left me frustrated with the MCs, especially Greg who I just didn’t really like all that much.

What I liked: There was very little shame around Greg’s HIV status except from Greg himself.

What frustrated me: I don’t believe I’ve read any of the authors other books, so maybe I’m missing a ton of backstory on the secondary characters from previous stories. There were so many characters introduced in the beginning of the book and their names and characteristics seemed to all run together so I had a hard time remembering who everyone was and how they’re connected to the MCs.
I had a very hard time connecting with Greg. He was very reactionary and, frankly, I feel like Holden is way too good for him! He acted much younger than 33.

Expectation vs reality: I actually thought this would be a high angst story. Most conflicts could have been easily resolved if Greg didn’t throw tantrums and they talked things out like adults in the beginning of their relationship.

CW/Triggers: Homophobia, closeted MC, HIV positive MC

Will I remember this book in a year? Honestly, I’m not sure this will stick with me for very long. There were interesting things I learned about asexuality, but not much else stood out.

3rd person, past tense, dual POV
    Greg Sullivan (33), flight attendant
Holden Mercer (48), flight instructor/technician for F25 simulators for Far Sight International (DOD contractor)

A word of caution about the first chapter, it's a bit heavy to set-up Greg's abysmal previous relationship experience. It hit me a little hard out of the gate because I wasn't really expecting it and my heart broke for him.

I love how perfectly suited for each other Greg and Holden were. I know it's a work of fiction so it seems silly to say, but they just felt custom made for each other, a fact that became more evident as the story unfolded. I loved the mutual love and understanding they shared for each other's... quirks that evolved from their pasts. Greg's trust issues from past relationships and some seriously shitty people not listening to him regarding his sexuality and being ace as well as living life after a betrayal that left him HIV positive. Holden lacking any kind of real relationship experience and living in the closet because of his work/life experience in the military and having lived through a time when being gay was not very accepted. With the right person these seeming mountains become molehills and are easily navigated.

After a club meet-cute in LA these two find themselves unexpectedly sharing a hotel room (with only one bed!) in Denver a short while later. Sharing an idyllic snowed-in date that they keep drawing out as they become closer these two are so sweet together. While their relationship progresses at a rapid pace, it doesn't feel too insta- and instead more like a natural progression of soul mates. The communication between these guys was phenomenal and the secondary characters, some who appear in other books by the author, serve to support the relationship in a realistic way without overshadowing the romance of the MCs.

I enjoyed the ace rep and how authentic it felt and how settled in his identity Greg was and how considerate Holden was of it and his HIV status. It would have been easy for these issues to become BIG PLOT POINTS but they just were and felt very normalized. I had finished the book and was reading another review before I even realized that they hadn't engaged in penetrative sex. I certainly didn't feel any lack of passion between them. In fact, the portrayal of their intimacy served to deepen their relationship and the trust between them.

My only real quibble is that the ending felt a little abrupt, like we skipped everything after the honeymoon phase of the relationship where they put in the work. The epilogue ties things up nicely but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed that we didn't get to see Holden's homophobic colleague, Brody, put in his place.

I was given an ARC and voluntarily wrote an honest review.

    =====

Read again in preparation for Friendly Skies release and I've enjoyed this book just as much the second time around. I has forgotten how much of a whirlwind this story was. These guys packed so much in a short amount of time, but it doesn't feel too fast at all.

I absolutely adored this book! So good. I completely fell for Greg & Holden. Their story was like a warm hug on a cold day!

The main characters were lovable and deep, the side characters were great, the issues were dealt with sensitively and the story flowed brilliantly. It's labelled as low angst but that didn't feel quite right as their histories provided plenty of angst, even if their relationship came together easily at second meeting.

4.5 stars. Greg was definitely one of the best ace characters I've read. Holden was amazing, adapting to Greg's feelings and communicating so well (especially as he took so little of that for himself in his life before Greg). The insta-love felt quite realistic and the two together were just so very sweet. A beautiful HEA.

4.0 out of 5 stars slow but good. age gap/comfort.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 16, 2023

This was a nice slow burn with an age gap, with a man who is a closeted ex military and another who is asexual and HIV positive. Holden had a hard life as a closeted gay man with DADT and had settled on a life where he continues to hide as his post military job as an aviation consultant doesn’t seem to give him the freedom to be who is is either. He allows himself a ‘break’ every so often. Greg is an air steward and has had bad luck meeting the right person as being asexual means it takes him longer to feel attraction and not many are willing to wait him out.

They meet at a club one night and both feel something more but a series of events happen and they lose contact. One day Holden is on a flight that Greg is working on and they both get stranded/ snowed in, in the same hotel. Greg invites Holden to his parent’s resort in Aspen for a few days and this down time away from everyone else, gives them a chance to get to know each other on a different level and they start to grow closer. Holden is very understanding of Greg’s asexuality and does his best to do what he can to show Greg he’s in for the long haul. Greg has his insecurities and they both travel a lot so they know that it will take work if they want to succeed at being a couple in the long run.

I enjoyed how the feelings were managed, Greg’s anxiety about being HIV positive and Holdens willingness to do what he can to keep them both safe but enjoy being together also.

Greg’s family and roommates/ best friends were amazing and really added to the story.
