- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2019The premise: LGBT historical, sports romance that takes place in 1970s California and Hawaii.
Jimmy Campbell was injured in Vietnam and ends up back in California. There are two things that help him get through: his best friend Rob and surfing. Our tale begins as Jimmy is participating in the International Surfing competition where he meets Danny Moore. Danny is the top surfer and the one to beat, but there's definitely more to him than meets the eye. Their paths collide and things go from there.
The writing: Honestly, I thought the writing was incredibly well done. Some people might think it's over the top or too flowery, but I'm here to tell you that I think it fits the story perfectly. It encapsulates the overall atmosphere and setting of the book. It feels the beach and the waves and the salt. It also captures the passion and love and tension between these characters so well. The pacing also flowed very well.
The setting: The author captured the atmosphere of the places that were being written about so well. We spend time in both California and Hawaii - Los Angeles and Oahu respectively and you are literally transported there. The setting is SO incredibly vivid and even if you've never been there before, it feels like you have.
The plot: I loved the plot of this a lot as well. The premise and plot are something I've never seen before, especially in a romance setting. I mean it's literally gay surfers falling in love in the 70s. The surfing aspects of the story were so well written and the author clearly knows what they're talking about/has done their research. They also wove in the romance in a wonderful way.
The characters: Our two main characters are Jimmy Campbell and Danny Moore, but there are a few incredibly side characters as well like Rob and Lori and Lehela. It can be argued though, that our primary main character is Jimmy. Getting to experience both Jimmy and Danny's stories both individually as well as together was so masterfully done. I won't spoil anything, but they're both incredibly complex and have had incredible and at times heartbreaking tales and getting to see it all interwoven together was wonderful. The relationship between Danny and Jimmy was believable and you could feel everything they went through just seep off the page. I also absolutely loved the relationship between Jimmy and Rob, so much. Their friendship is one of my new favorites and one of the best I've seen in quite awhile. Also getting to see Danny's relationships with all those around him was fascinating and I loved it. Basically, the relationships and characters is what truly drove this book.
Overall, I absolutely loved this book and would absolutely recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2022If he does well at the 1976 International Surf Festival in Hermosa Beach, Surfer James Campbell can finally go pro. 10 years older than the other competitors, Vietnam vet James is sharing his heat with two time Billabong Pipeline Masters Champion, the mysterious and aloof Danny (Sydney) Moore. What happens that day will change the course of their lives if they both have the courage to take a chance on each other.
This was a beautifully written story about two lonely men finding happiness together in a time when they were not able to be open about their love. James and Sydney both had traumatic pasts that still haunt them. Friendly and gregarious James is trying to hide his depression and feelings of hopelessness from his friends, often lost in memories and flashbacks from his time in Vietnam. Meanwhile, Sydney has no friends and tries to maintain this persona of being above it all, protecting himself from hostility and the rampant rumors about his sexuality within the competitive surfing community. Neither of them expected to find love or be able to have the kind of life they never even let themselves imagine. Their trust in each other strips away their masks and when they open up to each other it is truly beautiful. I fell in love with both guys and was rooting for them so hard! They are both total sweethearts and I wanted them to have all the love and happiness they were deprived of in their teenage years.
This book is on the longer side for a romance, but I liked that the author really took her time telling their story. The writing was beautiful, the story was dramatic and emotional, a bit of a slow burn but romantic as hell, and the HEA was super satisfying. The author does get a bit wordy at times. I think the book could have benefited from another round of edits and could have been tightened up a bit. There is also some language that doesn’t seem totally faithful to the 1970’s setting, but none of that detracted much from my enjoyment of the story. This book easily earned 5 stars from me and this story will stick with me for a long time!
CW: Depression, suicidal ideation, homophobia, internalized homophobia, war flashbacks
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2019Set in 1976, We meet James/Jimmy and Danny/Sydney at a surfing competition. The whole book takes place over several weeks, and Revolves Exclusively a round the 1970s world of surfing and surfing competitions. There is an underlying theme of post Vietnam war, and the prejudice and mistreatment the some veterans received. This story is long, and the prose was so lovely. I can see where some would feel like this story is too long and drags out because there is a lot of descriptive passages. But I found the descriptions so vivid that I fell into this story and could feel and see the hot sandy beaches, the salt spray, The roar of the ocean waves.
James and Sydney are both broken men, sad and aimless except for there mutual surfing passion.
I don't know how to describe it, in some ways this story felt very muted so that the intense Passion sneaks up on you. I loved the surfing theme, I had never read a book with surfing before and found it very interesting.
This is my first time to read this author, but will be looking for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best romances I’ve ever read
I wish I had to words to try and explain how incredible this book was, but I don’t think I could do it justice. You just have to read it for yourself and experience all it has to offer.
This is a book that makes you want to believe in love, to believe that the incredible kind of love between James and Sydney really does exist in the world, and that if you’re lucky you too might be able to experience something like it.
This book is written in such a way that I felt like I was living through the emotions of the characters, which is my favourite kind of reading experience. The authors words buried their way into my heart and left me feeling raw and emotional in a way so few books can do.
I’ve read a ton of romances, but I don’t think any love story I’ve ever read can compare to this. I think the setting has a big factor in this, due to the fact that it’s set in the 70’s where there were no LGBTQ+ rights, and people were heavily discriminated on based on their sexuality. Which meant Sydney kept himself away from people and the awful things they said about him, and James believed he’d never have the privilege to love a man and would have to settle for marrying a woman so he wouldn’t be alone rest of his life. It added a heightened emotion to all of James and Sydney’s interactions with more tension, fear, and doubt. But this also made their love more precious and cherished. I wanted to cry for them so much, both sad and happy tears.
I honestly can’t wait to read this book again some day. It was very long, just under 600 pages on my kindle, but I never wanted it to end. It was a wonderful read and I think anyone who enjoys reading about love would appreciate this book as much as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have no words.
I wish I could find the correct words to describe this book and how much it moved me... how much it touched me to the core... What an emotional journey it has been. It's now certainly one of my favorites...

5.0 out of 5 stars Life changing experience
How do you read "the love affair began with salt" and not immediately cancel all of your plans to read this magnificent book? It truly is an unstoppable reading but nearing the end I found myself taking breaks because I didn't want to be over. The writing is beautiful and the story is painful at moments but has the happiest of endings. This book broke me and put me together again.

5.0 out of 5 stars new favourite
This is officially my new favourite book. I can’t even think of words to sufficiently express how much it moved me, how much I loved it. If you like this genre - this is a must read. Simple as that. I will be thinking about this book for a long, long time.
