About the Author
When she was fifteen Lara found a very grubby copy ofGeorgette Heyer's Faro's Daughter in an equally grubby book store. Severalblissful hours later she emerged, blinking, into the light of day completely inlove with Regency Romance but it took three decades of various fascinating butcompletely unrelated careers in finance and high tech before she returned toher first love. She recently went looking for that crowded little bookstore butcouldn't quite remember around what corner it was...hopefully it is still thereand another girl is in the corner by the window, reading and dreaming...

- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2019Format: KindleOlivia Silverdale’s beloved godfather has died under scandalous circumstances, and her heart is breaking at seeing the pain his wife and family are enduring. She begins to investigate further, not believing that her godfather was capable of the actions attributed to him. Olivia discovers that there has indeed been some lying about Mr. Payton, her godfather, and she needs to find out why, and what the true facts are. When she finds some correspondence that indicates the former Earl Sinclair may have also been erroneously accused in a twenty year old scandal, she decides to contact his son, the current earl, to advise him of her findings.
Lucas, the current Earl Sinclair, is honestly not quite sure why he even agreed to meet with the lady who sent him they mysterious note regarding his father. He long ago accepted that his father was fully guilty and that he and his family must bear the stigma of being the “Sinful Sinclairs.” Convinced that Olivia either wants to blackmail him, or trap him in a compromising situation, Lucas is brusque, rude, and blunt with Olivia, barely allowing her to get a word in. Rather than being browbeaten, as he’d hoped, Olivia stands up for herself, and insists that Lucas listen to her.
Lucas is puzzled, as Olivia doesn’t react with fear, or appear to want to seduce him. He comes to realize that she is genuine, and wants his help to clear her godfather, and in turn, his father, who may have some connection. Lucas offers some basic assistance, then feels that there is nothing further to pursue, and advises Olivia to stop her investigation.
I could see right from the start that Lucas was a hard man with high walls built around him. He’s cynical and abrupt, yet he has a deep love for his brother and sister, and wants to protect them from further scandal. He believes that Olivia needs to face reality, and accept that her beloved godfather had feet of clay, and was guilty of betraying his family. Though Olivia suffered her own great betrayal three years ago, she still has faith in human nature.
I love Olivia’s matter-of-factness, and how some of her honest comments to Lucas could cut right through his arrogance, though her intent never was to wound him. She’s a fabulous heroine – determined, honest, caring, and intelligent. Despite all of Lucas’s failings, I loved him too. He’s a very strong and bold man, who was confused over his developing feelings for Olivia. Time and time again, her determination overrode his reluctance to investigate his family’s past. Eventually their attraction becomes very mutual, and I loved watching Lucas fall in love, something he never believed in before.
THE EARL’S IRRESISTIBLE CHALLENGE is a beautifully developed love story with characters I deeply cared about and rooted for. The intrigue part of the story was just as captivating as the romance, and I loved reading every single page. Lara Temple has started a brilliant new series, and I’m eagerly anticipating upcoming installments of the SINFUL SNCLAIRS. Most highly recommended!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2019Format: KindleVerified Purchase(4.5 stars) I confess to having often been a bit snobbish about HRs. Harlequins? Not for me, I'd usually say. Give me those authors like Lisa Kleypas, Eloisa James, Mary Balogh, Caroline Linden, etc., who have never been published (I believe) by Mills and Boon/Harlequin.
Well, I've now done a 180 about this, I guess. Most non-Harlequin authors have taken to pandering to the younger, "give me a bunch of sex and a silly story" crowd of readers and have left me out in the cold. There are still exceptions such as Meredith Duran, Sherry Thomas, Mimi Matthews, Jayne Fresina, but, IMO, you are welcome to the rest because I don't like to read them.
So I'm grateful to a GR friend who just reviewed Lara Temple's soon-to-be-released Sinful Sinclair #2 book very favorably. I've pre-ordered it based on that review and decided to read this one, #1 of the series, while waiting for the release of #2. I was wowed. This is a Harlequin HR and the author is very, very good.
What does this HR have going for it? (1) Excellently-drawn, complex characters. (2) Intelligent, snappy dialogue. (3) Less predictable plot than most HRs. (4) The best romance and relationship development I've read in ages. (5) Just the right amount of sex to seal the love deal without wasting pages and being annoyingly explicit.
Our heroine is Miss Olivia Silverdale, a rich heiress from Gillingham who has moved to London with her aunt and her nurse, both to escape the scandal surrounding her recent broken engagement and to investigate the death of her beloved godfather Henry Payton, who died scandalously, in the bed of a prostitute. Olivia cannot believe her godfather would have betrayed his wife in this way, and, in addition, she blames herself for his death, since the circumstances surrounding her scandal were the reason Henry had been working in London instead of in Gillingham.
While investigating, Olivia uncovers a connection between her godfather and Howard Sinclair, another man who had died scandalously. She makes contact with Lucas Sinclair, Howard's son and heir who is now the Earl Sinclair, thinking he would want to collaborate with her to find out the truth about both deaths.
Well, that doesn't quite work out the way she had expected. Lucas is cynical and bitter about the past and wants to leave it buried with his father. But just wait, my friends. Watch Lucas become intrigued by Olivia. At first suspicious that she is either trying to trap him into marriage or wants to blackmail him, he finally sees her for what she is. A force of nature to be reckoned with. A list-making, truth-seeking knight, "Sir Olive-a-Dare." Better to join her and keep her in line than leave her on her own.
The plot is good. It is also well developed and entertaining and doesn't have contrivances and stupid behavior, especially on the part of the heroine, who is an admirable female. The characters are the best I've read in perhaps a year or so of attempting to find an HR to my taste. And the love between H and h develops beautifully and organically. There is physical attraction early on but it's a slow burn to the actual sexual intimacy, which doesn't happen until close to the three-quarters mark. That's the way I like it.
Temple doesn't need scenes with descriptions of body parts fitting into other body parts to show us the sexual nature of the relationship of these two. For example, there is one very hot scene in which the two are visiting a museum and wander into a room with a series of marble statues. Olivia is fascinated by the beauty of these reliefs and feels the need to touch them, which she does. It's perhaps the sexiest scene in the book and the poor hero is almost unmanned. "You are a menace, Miss Silverdale," Lucas said without turning. "You told me to touch it," she replied..."I said touch it, not make love to the blasted thing."
This story has all the romance that's been lacking in all those clinical love stories I've been reading. It's warm and fuzzy and sexy and gave me all the feels I want in a romance. It has a hero who is extremely attracted to the heroine but who, wonder of wonders, is able to control his libido. You can see that these two will do very well in their future, not just in bed but out of it. That's not always a given in many romances.
This is almost a 5-star book for me. Why not 5? Well, it's darned close to that, but there was a little snafu/misunderstanding near the end that I found unnecessary. It was resolved in a beautiful way, but still... Maybe I'm being too picky?

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it
I was immersed in this book from the moment I started reading. It is not an entirely new plot, nor entirely new characters - but the author has put her own original spin on this character-driven story. Lucas and Olivia are such likeable people - as another reviewer said, I'm not sure why Lucas had such a bad-boy reputation, but it really didn't matter - nor, frankly, did the plot matter, although it illustrated how gossip and innuendo could literally make or break people and families. What mattered was seeing these two people slowly but surely discovering and then admitting their feelings for each other to themselves and how this is brought to a hugely satisfying conclusion. The dialogue is sparkling and witty and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next one, since we have already been introduced to Lucas' brother, Chase and heard interesting snippets about their sister, Sam.

5.0 out of 5 stars A charming romance that you won't want to end
This is such a lovely romance that I really didn't want it to end. Olivia is a wonderful character and I thoroughly enjoyed the way she charmed Lucas, and the way that she wouldn't be defeated by any of the obstacles in her path. I look forward to reading the other books in this series.
