Blood at Dusk: A Dark Vampire Paranormal Romance Novel (The SoulBlood Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
"This is like a wonderful mash of Ice Planet Barbarians and The Vampire Academy!" - Reviewer
________
KORA
My world changed when the vampires arrived.
I'm hungry, alone in a dark cave, and mourning for those I’ve already lost.
But I won't surrender. I'm a fighter, a survivor, and I won't let fear hold me back.
That is, until a vampire appears at my doorstep.
And he doesn’t want blood... He wants something more sacred. Something I’m not willing to give away.
ALDEON
I’ve been lost to the bloodlust like many of my people, living in a maddened haze until now. But everything changes the moment I breathe in her fragrance.
Primal urges stir deep in my soul, and I know with absolute certainty that the white-haired human is mine-- my fated mate.
But danger lurks around the corner; a malicious enemy is leading a group of rabid dhampirs right to where she lives, ready to drain her dry.
It is my duty to protect her. I’ll fight to the death if I must.
And when the time is right, I will claim her as mine.
If you enjoy enemies to lovers, fated mates, telepathic vampires, blood bonds, and a romance so hot you have to stuff your face in the freezer to recoup, then you’re in the right place.

About the author

Brenna Harlow (if that’s even her real name) lives happily in her own fantasy land, drinking way too much coffee and reading an endless amount of smutty paranormal romance. She joined the land of the living only to share her love for the creatures of the night, and henceforth has claimed her throne at the Kingdom of Vampires and Fated Mates.
You can find Brenna in any coffee shop that provides free Wi-Fi, drinking her triple shot espresso and stabbing her keyboard to death.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseKora and Aldeon’s story was a very enjoyable read. I loved the new twist on a vampire love story. It was like The Walking Dead meets vampires. Kora is a wonderfully written main character, and her inner monologue really asks the same questions the reader wants to ask. Even in falling for Aldeon she is cognizant of it not being normal and it is refreshing in comparison to a lot of popular vampire romance. I’m very excited to see where this goes!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSomeone told me that this book was like Ice Planet Barbarians but with vampires and they were definitely right.
Similar is IPB, Blood At Dusk is a paranormal romance that includes the mate trope, a female who is timid of the male, and a male who just wants to protect the female. This series will continue to follow the side characters in the story as they find their mates, similar to IPB. I actually preferred this to IPB because this book doesn’t include the awful beginning of SA like IPB does.
While it is similar, it’s definitely its own series with some fan-favorite tropes. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic Earth, specifically the Tennesse area if I remember correctly, after the invasion of vampires who are from a different planet. The story about how the vampires got there begins to unfold throughout the book and I believe we will learn more as the series continues.
Kora has been through a bit of trauma as she’s dealt with the loss of her family to the vampires that invaded Earth. While she’s been put through it, she’s still surviving and I actually really enjoyed her character. She obviously isn’t immediately trusting of Aldeon but I liked how their story ended up unfolding.
And Aldeon, the poor vampire, just wanted to love and protect Kora. What a teddy bear… a teddy bear that will unalive anyone who messes with his mate but that’s exactly what I was looking for.
This was a super quick read as it’s less than 200 pages and I think it’s a good start to a PNR series. I felt that it was easy to read and moved quickly. To the people that said there was no plot… I mean it’s a PNR romance with a mate bond plus the additional vampire plot point that comes later in the book. Like what else did you want??? The book was solid and I’m excited to read the next one.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI liked this take on Vampires, add in some post apocalyptic world building, a fated mate and you’ve got a good thing. I enjoyed it, I was entertained for sure. I have just two issues—this needs a really good comb through for typos, but honestly that’s a little thing. If you’re someone who gets really persnickety about editing, this is probably not for you. However, if you can read right through them without getting uptight about it, you’ll be fine.
The other thing, I would have liked more development of this villain. At the end he’s on the war path for vengeance… I don’t understand what he wants revenge for, they’ve had no interaction with him at all and his intentions were really unclear. There was great development for Kora and Aldeon, and even Brone to some extent, but not for the villain. I’m interested in the next book for sure. I imagine that the villain development will be made up for in the next book, and I wanna know lol What’s his deal?
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI read this first book and was baffled at first because it seemed odd. I could not stop reading it though, I had to know what was going on. By the end I was trying to decide if I should or shouldn't read the second book. Curiosity got me and I am so glad I read it. This series is clever and entertaining in ways that are original. The cover is likely causing readers to bypass these books, but believe me read this series. I am not being paid to say this. I am an avid reader since I am disabled and gobble books up. I am ready for book four and can't wait.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseInteresting. I liked the flow. The language is crude if you like it. Some of the editing is interesting but its still readable. Their story is a good base for the series. Aldeon and Kora are a cute couple. Aldeon’s morals are more than admirable and Kora keeps him on his toes. I love that he gives her gifts. I fee like he uses each of the love languages on Kora. Protection, physical touch, gifts, time, and words. Desire turns to lust which turns to love. I love Brone and Jacel. I am super excited to see where their story goes. I hope it develops further as each of them woo their human females. Its almost comical how opposed Maggie and Alora are to those two. Its funny and adorable and exciting.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved how even though the book was short it had such in depth detail And I would definitely recommend this book to vampire lovers It is definitely a 5 star rating in my book
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is the first time I have read anything from Brenna Harlow. I love her fresh style and exciting characters. The storyline and the steamy love making keeps those pages turning to find out what happens next. Then Brenna Harlow throws in twists and turns and you just need the next book to find out what develops. Excellent work.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseCover art is beautiful, but there’s a lot of issues with this book. The story felt way too rushed and disjointed to me without enough world building. I couldn’t connect with the main characters, she’s not very bright and he’s one dimensional and dog like just following her around and hoping she’ll accept him as her mate even though he admits remembering slaughtering all these people and brushes it off as “nothing I can do, it’s the past”; and there isn’t any kind of storyline really. The villain and secondary characters are just kinda thrown in 75% of the way into the story with no background so it was kinda of like, Ok? Who is that? What’s happening? Just didn’t work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprising but alluring
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI was alittle sceptical when I realised the Dhampire were from another planet altogether... But be prepared for a ride you never expected from Dhampire skills and alluring "brothers". Saving the day never surprised me more. The end isnt too much of a cliffhanger as an ending left open for the next drama from anothers point of view but I will definitely be purchasing all other books coming! I wanna see whom else had some wierdo trying to be nice lol 🤣

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book by a debut author!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really enjoyed the interaction between the two main characters and loved the development of their romance. A fun read and I can't wait for the rest of the series!

3.0 out of 5 stars This could have been epic
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseTrying to wrap my head around this. End of the world and the heroin is barely scavenging or thinking survival tactics. Being a vegan that only looks for canned food ermmmm? almost winter and her great idea is a pair of sweatpants and a hoodie whilst living in a cave?? Locked in a bathroom but doesn't collect water or at least try to get clean. See where I'm going with this.
3 stars because maybe she really had completely just given up however the execution of the plot could have been better.
