Meeting Callum for the first time while being crushed under a hundred pounds of sunflowers was somewhat awkward.

Seeing him flee to the other side of the country because of what he saw in my head was downright humiliating.

I can’t help but feel like my dad should have told me ahead of time that his girlfriend and her son had psychic abilities.

Four long years later and he’s back to watch our parents finally get married, and I’m still wondering what on earth he saw in my head that day.

I never thought going on a blind date would eventually bring the answers I was looking for…

Or that it would completely turn my life upside down…

~

Sunflower, the first book in The Agency series, features a young college student, unwittingly dropped into a world he knows nothing about, a psychic that seems to know far more than he’s letting on, and a romance that will be treated like the myths of old in the centuries to come.

Each book in The Agency series features a different couple with their own HEA in an overarching plotline. It is recommended to read the books in order for the most enjoyment.

Gratuitous use of sunflowers; really, they’re everywhere if you know where to look; Irish Gaelic as a love language; Callum thrives on being annoyingly mysterious; Joey doesn’t believe in psychics; oh wait, yes, he does; Joey steals some clothing, but really, it’s better this way; oh, look, Callum is being mysterious again; a simple blind date that doesn’t turn out quite so blind or quite so simple; the world is so much bigger than what Joey believes; saucy times are saucy; over-enthusiastic family and friends that only have the best of intentions, they swear; antagonist is a nasty piece of work and deserves everything coming his way; Callum is a really good multi-tasker, especially when he’s driving; Joey is unnerved by everything and simply prays that he doesn’t end up in a fiery automobile accident, please and thank you; Greek myths re-told and re-imagined; Joey finds himself in all sorts of trouble; Callum doesn’t like that, not one bit; Joey is sassy when cornered; Callum finds Joey adorable when he’s not himself; their parents do something unexpected and it’s Callum’s turn to be incredibly unnerved by the turn of events; no, seriously, he’s convinced this will spell everyone’s impending doom

“I’ve been preparing for tonight for a long time.” “For this date?”
“For you.”

TROPES:
🌻 Stepbrothers
🌻 Psychic MC
🌻 Cuddles for warmth

A sweet romance with a paranormal twist.
Sunflower was a fun mix of romance, mystery, Greek mythology & paranormal elements. Loved all the different powers, the connection between Joey and Callum.

“You’re the only one I want, mo lus na gréine. The only one I’ll ever crave.”

And while the romance was very cute and romantic, it did feel too insta for me. And the writing was more the tell instead of show kind, which fell a bit flat. I would’ve liked maybe more of a ‘chase’, maybe Joey not being told right away about Callum’s powers, more dates and flirting and ‘oops, I read your mind’ moments.

Despite all that, this was an excellent start and definitely shows promise for a fun paranormal series.

“You’re my anamchara, Joey.”

Here's Kayla Halleur's "Sunflower." It's the first book in her series, The Agency.

["Meeting Callum for the first time while being crushed under a hundred pounds of sunflowers was somewhat awkward.

Or that it would completely turn my life upside down…"]

And the bonus tags (because they're arguable better than the blurb itself): ["Gratuitous use of sunflowers; really, they’re everywhere if you know where to look; Irish Gaelic as a love language; Callum thrives on being annoyingly mysterious; Joey doesn’t believe in psychics; oh wait, yes, he does; Joey steals some clothing, but really, it’s better this way; oh, look, Callum is being mysterious again; a simple blind date that doesn’t turn out quite so blind or quite so simple; the world is so much bigger than what Joey believes; saucy times are saucy; over-enthusiastic family and friends that only have the best of intentions, they swear; antagonist is a nasty piece of work and deserves everything coming his way; Callum is a really good multi-tasker, especially when he’s driving; Joey is unnerved by everything and simply prays that he doesn’t end up in a fiery automobile accident, please and thank you; Greek myths re-told and re-imagined; Joey finds himself in all sorts of trouble; Callum doesn’t like that, not one bit; Joey is sassy when cornered; Callum finds Joey adorable when he’s not himself; their parents do something unexpected and it’s Callum’s turn to be incredibly unnerved by the turn of events; no, seriously, he’s convinced this will spell everyone’s impending doom"]

This story was adorable as hell! I looooved the meet-cute turned meet-ugly. I loved the pet names. I loved their relationship (...after they were allowed to have one). I loved the mythology and lore that was built upon real "history"/history. I loved the secrecy of it all.

I loved Callum and Joey. They were utterly perfect for each other. I loved how fast they grew together, how quickly it progressed into something more, how sure they both were..especially when everything else was falling apart around them (and they didn't know who to trust).

We still don't know who to (fully) trust. This book ended with a series cliffhanger (you've been warned--but these two got their HEA).

Trigger Warnings: On-page (not between MCs): coercive behavior, dangerous driving, graphic physical and verbal assault and violence (including an interrogation scene), homophobia, cheating, severe allergies and related EpiPen usage, stalking; Off-page (brief mentions in passing): children rescued from a cult (prior to the start of the story), deaths/Murders of adults and children (one baby during the plot of the story, and one seven-year-old via myth re-telling), eugenics (via myth re-telling), home invasion (prior to the start of the story), planned arranged child marriages (via myth re-telling)

We meet Joey , age 15. His Dad has an Irish girlfriend Erin and she has a college aged son Callum.

“Joey, right? Or should I call you Sunflower?”

Callum shakes joeys hand and does some sort of channeling thing? I guess he’s a psychic ?

Callum sees something and it freaks him out and leaves Joey confused. Erin is also a psychic .

mo lus na gréine is Gaelic for My Sunflower 🌻 and is used 81 times.

‘He was such a beautiful man, but he hated me so much after a single afternoon that he decided he couldn’t be around me anymore. I didn’t understand.’
Aww poor Joey 😔

Three and a half years later….

Joeys Dad and Erin are getting married. Joey has THE WORST girlfriend named Amelia. But their relationship ends so yay!

Callum and Joey talk and Joey finds out Callum has never hated him.

6 months later…
Sooo Joey has gotta be at least 19 now right?

Joey ends up on a blind date with Callum and finds out what his vision was all those years ago.

‘….reaching his hand over the table to take mine, and lowered his voice. “I saw our wedding day.”

Ahh yes, no wonder Callum left after he saw that vision.

Callum works for a team of private investigators who have special skills. Like being psychic. I’m not sure if they work as part of the US government. His mum used to work for them and doesn’t know Callum now works for them.

Callum and Joey start dating.

Callum has a stalker.Joey thinks the stalker is after Callum’s boss George.

There is a mole at Callum’s work.

Callum’s tells stories of Greek mythology to explain his family’s heritage… that he’s a descendant of Apollo.

Oh and Joey just saw a vision of their future.

‘The explosion of a vibrant cacophony of color overtook my senses and the unerring certainty that I loved this man with every fiber of my being, and that he loved me back with every beat of his heart, nearly stole my breath away.’

The stalker, calls himself The Agent and I think he works for the government to shut down Callum’s work?

Polo and Cinthy appear.
Are they Apollo and Hyacinthus?
I’m so confused lol this book is taking a turn I didn’t see. Ha. And it’s about psychics and seer’s 🤣🤣

Now they need a scryer. And Joey is a boost? I think whatever that is , it’s very helpful to Callum’s power.

Ooh I was right about those guys being Apollo and his eternal lover.

Ahh yes Boosts …. they boost others powers.

All the code names, the action and loving Erin’s code name ~ Petrichor. Shits going down and everyone needs to go to headquarters.

So now it’s a family affair, the parentals have joined the agency with Callum and Joey.

Omg 😱 SHIT WENT DOWN

Callum and Joey live happily ever after but for the rest of the agency … there’s more books planned and surely the mole will be unearthed.

I can’t believe we have to wait a whole year for the next one in the series !! I’m too invested 😍

"How can I fix what's broken if I don't know what needs fixing?"

This was a mix of mystery, coming of age, paranormal, family (and all the fun things that entails), nasty bad guys, sweet romance, and an ending that is really a new beginning

A solid introduction for this debut author
I am looking forward to seeing where we go next and watching the growth in the characters
Overall, a solid storyline that was easy to follow. Great characters that I instantly fell in love with.
Some areas didn't really click for me, but that is most definitely a me thing. I like lots of background and details. A couple of times, the details did not match with what I had going in my head up to that point, or they were situations that I couldn't fit properly into the timeline or situation

I foresee this series/author becoming one of my one-clicks
It has all the things I look for in an entertaining read

This was an enjoyable and interesting book. The premise was very intriguing and it hooked me from the start. Since it's the first book in a series, there waa quite a bit of world building going on and I enjoyed it a lot, especially the reimagining of stories from Greek mythology.
I loved Callum and Joey's meet-cute a lot, I also really enjoyed their blind date. I really enjoyed how Callum gave little clues to Joey regarding their future before their time came. Callum was cute trying to stay mysterious, but he could not resist Joey, even if he tried.
It's somewhat insta-lovey, which doesn't always work, but in this instance I felt it and really enjoyed it. And can it really be insta-love, when they've known each other for 4 years and Callum had his vision about his and Joey's future together and he already had huge feelings for Joey? Callum and Joey were cute and sweet together. I loved the intensity of their feelings for each other.
The pacing of the book was good, and what I could understand of the overarching plot has me intrigued and excited for the next book in this series. I really enjoyed the suspense element in this book, it had me guessing what could be going on.

If you enjoy books with paranormal elements, nicknames in foreign languages and step-siblings who become more then this is the book for you.

Sunflower is the first book in The Agency series. This is the story of Joey and Callum. Callum and Joey are just so perfect together. I loved the whole story including the plot. The twists kept me engaged in the story. I really enjoyed the paranormal part of the story. I loved the characters and world building for the story and series. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book.

DNF at about 40%. Too insta-love-y, and also there was too much of one of my pet peeves: characters laughing uproariously at things that aren't funny. Just not for me.

The first time Joey encounters his future step-brother, Callum, he is a teenager. He doesn’t expect things to go effortlessly, but their encounter is promising. Then they shake hands, and everything changes. Looking horrified, Callum steps away and, that night, leaves the house, with Joey not knowing what he’s done and thinking the worst. Their subsequent encounter throws Joey through a loop again, turning everything he thought on its head.
Sunflower is the first book of a series, where each couple gets their HEA, but there is an over-reaching series arc. Also, it is this author’s debut novel, and to this end, Sunflower is a good tale, showing Kayla Halleur as a future name to look out for.
The story is told in the first person, 90% of which is from Joey’s viewpoint. Sunflower is almost a book of two halves. In the first part, the reader gets to know the characters. The second revolves around the series title, The Agency, which contains people with special powers who help and investigate various individuals. A lot of storytelling gets the reader up to speed on where all the various powers came from. And this is possibly where this author’s rookie element comes in.
The information provided shows that much thought and research went into the tale’s production. It gives depth and the knowledge that elements haven’t been picked out of thin air. Kudos to the author here. However, other than the history used in the current novel that became clearer later, it is a bit of a distraction. I have read many paranormal, scrying, shapeshifter and similar story genres, and I didn’t need to know the origins of the power to enjoy the story. Nevertheless, if some of these elements are used in other novels, perhaps leave some of the reveal for later. The extensive history lessons were lovely tales, but I fear they may have made the book longer than necessary. I understand the enthusiasm and love for one's characters and the inner need to prove you’ve thought of the whys and wherefores concerning a beloved story, but less could have been more. I’m not saying it shouldn’t have been there, but less comprehensively, it would have been more effective. Less also allows a writer to change future direction without leaving holes in the arc and the reader going, ‘WTF, I thought you said!!!’.
Joey and Callum are lovely characters. Both have edgier sides and are tooth-achingly sweet towards each other. However, for me, Erin was the star. Everyone else paled in comparison. There’s nothing like a momma bear protecting her brood. Awesome. Other members of The Agency look to have fascinating tales to tell, which I suspect will be future subjects.
Overall, Sunflower is an engaging debut novel from a star of the future. The over-reaching arc had some twists and turns, which could lead to paths that could blow the minds of The Agency. The author has multiple options. These are interesting times, indeed.

Mo chridhe: Old fashioned, bland, a gentle sentiment for gentle people.

Mo lus na gréine: New hotness, celestial, a tidal wave of emotion wrapped in destiny and longing.

I loved this series opener to The Agency. This paranormal intrigue series has me desperately hoping the author will write more. Callum and Joey are sweet, spicy, and engaging, and I would have happily read many more pages of their beautiful romance.

Their story starts with a contemporary romance meet-cute, and slowly spirals into paranormal mystery and conspiracy at a steady and inevitable pace. I started this book at night, like an unprepared fool, and then briefly debated how badly I needed sleep at 1 AM.

The story is largely told from Joey’s perspective. I enjoyed his hilarious and uninhibited reactions to things. His romance with Callum is low-angst (with a dash of pining), and there's plenty of plot twisting about to keep you hooked.

I was a little nervous after reading the content warnings, but honestly it was like Shannon Mae, Lori Ames, and AJ Sherwood conspired to write an entirely new paranormal series and ended up with this delightful and entertaining read. The list of content warnings at the beginning is… extensive. Honestly, there was only one I was a bit nervous about, and it was a non-issue.

This is the first book in the series, but you'll appreciate Joey’s interactions with his friends at the beginning of the book more if you sign up for the author’s newsletter and read her short, Flooded, first. It's not essential reading, but it's a sweet and quick contemporary read. I already can't wait for the next book in this series. The next story focuses on a new couple, but the overarching plot of the series continues. If you’re into love that's been written in the stars, intrigue, and characters with paranormal powers, this is a wonderful read.

I read a lot of books - A LOT of books. And I can unequivocally say this is the best debut I’ve read in YEARS. I could not put it down. The blend of Greek mythology, psychics and seers, ‘The Agency’ which only hits the tip of the iceberg, and the, quite frankly, superb romance.

How refreshing it was to read a romance with an MC who knows they’re soulmates and knows they’re basically fated to one another, and the other MC DOESN’T FIGHT IT. As soon as Callum told Joey why he’d spent the last four years away, Joey was all in. Didn’t hesitate, didn’t question, just led with his heart and decided that yes, Callum is and would be his everything. Swoooooon. Seriously, this is such a swoony book. Sexy too. And the plot??? Fantastic. It had a bit of shock to it at the end that really hit home how serious this all was, and left a little cliffhanger to be picked up in the next book. But Callum and Joey get their HEA. And that last chapter, where Callum remembers the full vision of Joey and their life together? I frigging cried. So freaking lovely and swoony and I will never get over this book. I have the biggest book hangover. I honestly can’t recommend this enough.

Also: this author provides the most amazingly detailed without giving away the plot CW and TW list at the beginning of the book. I read it all the way through and it tells you everything you may need to know without somehow giving away anything. Kudos.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.5 stars

Sunflower kicks off the new The Agency series by Kayla Halleur. The story has a great set up and some interesting world building, but had some challenges for me as well. I found myself drawn into the story right at the start, as Joey meets Callum, only to have Callum freak out and then quickly leave town. Joey learns about Callum and his mom being psychic soon thereafter, but he has no idea what Callum saw that day to set him off.

I think the world building is interesting here in terms of the origin of these special abilities. It plays into Greek mythology and it is a unique approach that I haven’t seen before. The origin story did get a little convoluted for me at times and I am not sure I followed all the details, but someone more familiar with mythology may have an easier time with it.

There are more books to come, featuring new couples, so the plot arc regarding the mole is not resolved here in this story. In the end, I found a lot here that I enjoyed, but this story didn’t fully come together for me. I just felt like the romance happened way too fast, and the larger plot with the Agency was just not developed enough to carry the story or the larger series.

Read Jay's review in its entirety here.

Let me first say that I enjoyed this book. It was a little slow to start, but at about the 40% mark, it had its hooks in me, and I was locked in til the end. The paranormal element was nicely woven throughout the story, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the world.

With that said, because this book is classified as an MM romance, I was really hoping to have seen the development of the relationship between Joey and Callum. I can concede that there is a significant focus on the relationship, but with everything else that’s going on in the book, it sometimes feels secondary. (I’m not saying this is a bad thing; I’m just saying it’s a thing.) And I truly wish there was just more of Joey and Callum.

One thing that occasionally confused me – though it didn’t really pull me out of the story exactly – is some of the turns of phrase. The story itself takes place in the US, but there are so many turns of phrase that are very European that it occasionally confused my poor American brain. Will all of that said, I really loved getting in on the ground floor, so to speak, with this series and I really hope we get to see more of Joey and Callum in the next book or books.

Now, for a couple of favorite quotes:

“Barry! Barry! Our boys are f**king like Energizer bunnies!” – Hello second-hand embarrassment.

“Thinking is evil. Words are sparkly.” – I’ll have what he had!!

Whew! I'm emotionally drained! But what a rollercoaster ride! *SIGH*

Imagine Greek mythology overlapping with mystery and the paranormal. That's what you get when you read "Sunflower", Book 1 of 'The Agency' by Kayla Halleur. It took me three days to finish it. Not just because it's 104K words long, but because the storyline is intricate and detailed. I had to reread some parts several times because of the large cast of characters. Or for things I missed the first time reading it and to get clarification of important scenes because of the unpredictability. I'm not mad at having to spend the extra time to do so. The suspense and intrigue becomes addictive.

Normie Joey has his life turned upside down by, of all things, his family and subsequent events. Powered Callum, Joey's stepbrother, befuddles Joey to no end. One of the few things that doesn't is his attraction to Callum. I forgot to mention that Joey doesn't know a thing about the Powered world.

I can't wait for Book 2, "Goblin"! I recommend reading this very much.

I had varied reactions to this book. I enjoyed certain elements and also was frustrated at times.

I think this is a debut; congrats to the author. I enjoyed her easy-to-read style. And the premise is strong; the MCs meet due to their parents’ relationship, and it turns out MC Callum and his mom are psychics, leading to an intense first encounter when Joey and his dad arrive, and then Callum avoiding Joey for years, with Joey believing Callum hates him. Great tension and hints of pining ensue.

I also enjoyed the developments in the connection between Callum and Joey, and getting to know the different abilities involved in the people of the Agency. I do love psychic elements and found that entertaining!

Up front, I didn’t appreciate Joey’s cliché caricature girlfriend; it seemed derogatory to women to create yet another all-bad, seemingly unintelligent disposable bitch who cheats without a qualm then expects to stay together. Either Joey is a legit fool for putting up with her truly nasty entitled attitude, or...yeah, that’s all I got. (I also couldn’t figure out...did they start dating in high school? They’ve been together 2 years but he’s now 19 and halfway through sophomore year of college, yet before her, managed to hook up with a bunch of both M and W...in high school? Sure, okay, I guess?) It was also selfish of Joey to That’s all done with early on.

I also didn’t enjoy Callum knowing the future and being just fine stepping aside while Joey (and probably Callum too?) didn’t know a thing and grew up hooking up with and dating other people. I’m not into that scenario; it felt like fated mates who know they’re fated but still see other people before getting together. Ew. I don’t care about that being a good healthy thing IRL; in a romance, it’s unappealing (for me) and diminished the fantasy of them being right for each other. Also, why is Joey being 19 the right age to then step in? He was still in college/figuring himself out, and Callum’s now, what, 23 and has his career and life? I mean, if you’re going to lean in to the “he’s too young,” 19 and still in college still seems kinda early for starting on the lifetime commitment, given Callum was okay with waiting anyway. Might’ve been more believable to start things after Joey graduated from college, since Callum was being responsible anyway? I would’ve been just as bothered either way, and now 😳

That is a Me thing, obviously. And the author didn’t go into any gory details about lovers (appreciated!), not even with the cliché disposable GF, so, moving on.

There’s a bit of a disconnect between the contemporary student-centric sensibility of the setup chapters and the suspense thread that begins as soon as the MCs really get together (also early on). It felt like two different reads. Kind of a jarring segue. There’s no romantic tension for the remainder of the book; it’s insta-love.

Character and relationship development is missing. I assume these two know each other vicariously through reports from their parents, but, I didn’t get to know either of them well; the story skips the dating and getting to know you Stuff and jumps straight to We’re in love and having great sex. If you just go with it, it’s enjoyable to see them together all loved up, but, I’m not sure who these guys really are.

Once they’re together, romantic tension drops away and the focus is on the suspense plot, and the crux of the plot became more about George than these two. I did enjoy the developments with Joey and his connection to Callum and where that went, and wish there’d been more focus on that.

It was a decent first-book effort. I’m interested to see what the author does next.

HEA, psychic hero, stepbrothers to lovers, premonition/meant to be premise. One MC has a girlfriend when the book opens; once that’s over, the MCs get together and there are no others, but, the setup still made me squirmy, with the one MC being fine with the other dating around all those years. Most will think it’s a good, healthy, responsible thing that the other MC stepped away for a few years. I’m just Extra about romance. Recommended for trying a new author.

Many thanks to Gay Romance Reviews for the ARC; this is my free and impartial opinion.

This is a stepbrothers to more paranormal romance, featuring Joey and Callum, and is book one in the Agency series.

Joey meeting Callum while buried under a pile of sunflowers was awkward—but him running away after seeing into his mind was even worse. Four years later, a blind date brings Callum back into Joey’s life, along with the answers he has been waiting for and a love he never saw coming.

This book was fantastic, I completely devoured it. There are secrets, mystery, intrigue, lots of interesting characters with special abilities and unwavering and soul deep love - I LOVED IT! It’s added to my favourites list.

I seriously cannot wait for the next book.

Don’t forget to read the bonus scenes and there is a novella linked to this too.

Things to expect in this book are:
Book 1 in series
MM paranormal romance
Stepbrothers
Psychic x college student
Secrets revealed
Pan rep
Blind date
Some spice & dirty talk
Public s*x
Fall fast / All in
Mystery & intrigue
Found family

Joey is a young teen when he meets his step-brother-to-be and his reaction to him is astounding. Callum has the same reaction, knowing Joey is his future

I liked Callum’s strength of character in separating himself from Joey because of his age.

Lots of characters with different paranormal abilities. But what exact use these abilities are put to aren’t really defined. The Agency’s agenda seems to be helping the world but there just isn’t enough information to understand what they do and why they do it. A bit confusing in places. As the first in a series it had enough information about the main characters to make them interesting but I felt the story lacked depth. The bad guy was almost a caricature and just seemed pathetic.

This story was at times a mystery, a romance, a history lesson, or a cautionary tale of abuse of power.

3.5 stars round up - ARC received from Gay Romance Reviews

Joey and Callum become step-family when Joey's father and Callum's mother marry. They are also destined for each other, and that's a fine line in any situation. Here, it takes on more complications as Callum's connections to an agency specializing in psychic investigation are revealed. Think Minority Report crossed with X-Files, and in the midst of it Joey and Callum are navigating new territory and determining their place in the world.

Sunflower is a lengthy and intriguing introduction to the Agency world of ancient bloodlines and mystical powers. I enjoyed reading the couple's journey and commend Callum's responsibility when first meeting Joey. With age gap and youth discourse prevalent in reading circles, now it's good to see.

Halleur gives us fascinating world-building here. Fans of M/M fantasy will enjoy.

Sunflower is the first book in Kayla Halleur's The Agency series. I really enjoyed the first third of the book. Very nice love story with some pining. And then the "Agency" was added. Halleur has a talent for plot twists. And the pacing was very good, very steady. Government agencies are often depicted as sketchy. But I rather liked the idea of psychics saving the world.
That leather jacket had me thinking that Callum was a bad boy. But he was actually quite thoughtful and charming. I think Joey needs a bit more seasoning. A bit more growth. He reminds me of a puppy who hasn't quite grown into his feet.
Good plot. Good world build. This was the first book I've ever read by this author. And I'm ready for more.
I received an advanced copy of this book and this is my review.

I was intrigued by the description of this story and was glad that I got a chance to read it. Joey and Callum's story is interesting. They met because their parents were dating but the first meeting did not last long. Callum flees and it takes a while before they reunite for their parents' wedding. That's when Joey gets a chance to find out why Callum left so suddenly though not right away. And the story traces the progression of their relationship and getting to know the world they were living in. I enjoyed the paranormal elements that are infused throughout this story as well as the twists and turns in the plot that kept me interested to read what was going to happen. I am looking forward to more from this author.

This was cute and funny with a cozy mystery vibe to it. The slight PNR/fantasy aspect of psychic abilities interwoven into the contemporary setting was nicely done.

There was a whole slew of names and characters that were thrown in at one point without much explanation, which made it seem like it was maybe referencing a different series or prequel where we're supposed to have met these characters before. There wasn't much explanation for those names, so I felt like I was missing a bit of the story there.

Callum is so sweet and Joey is adorakably funny.

Can't wait for book 2 of this series.

Thank you for the book, here is my honest opinion:
This was a bit of a mixed bag for me. I loved the premise which is a cool mix of a grounded reality with paranormal elements, fun. One of the challenges for me was how young the characters are versus how they behave. For example, a nineteen year old Joey speaks of his relationship with his high school girlfriend like they are decades into a marriage. I also really dislike the awful girlfriend/ex character, this is a trope I honestly almost always hate. So, I can’t say I loved every part of ride, but the writing is engaging and there’s some good world building happening in the plot.

Sunflower by Kayla Halleur kicks off The Agency series with a mix of romance, psychic powers, and mysterious twists. Joey and Callum meet as teens through their parents’ relationship—sparks fly instantly, but Callum pulls away due to Joey’s age, leaving years of pining and confusion between them.

The romance is sweet, the paranormal world is intriguing, and I loved the psychic elements and strong emotional connection between the leads. There’s a solid setup for the series, though the Agency’s purpose felt a bit vague and the villain underdeveloped. Still, the story kept me hooked with its easy flow and compelling character dynamics.

Looking forward to more in the series!

Callum and Joey ❤️🔥🌻

4 Stars ⭐️

I could tell from the start that the mystery and paranormal element of this read was going to suck me right in. The characters were perfect for one another, the sweet times were very cute and the spicy times were hot. There are so many elements to the story that only add to the romance going on which gives the story so many layers that keep you curious. This is my first read from this author and I can't wait to have more from them. I would recommend.

Wow. Okay, so I guess I didn't exactly realize what I was getting into with this book, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Love love love loved it. Very pleased with the character development and the way powers were explained (kind of hate the use of the word "normie" because it sounds extremely derogatory, but that's life). The thrill of the reality of The Agency pushed the cheesy this-could-be-a-superhero-movie vibe down to something more reasonable. I'm so excited to see what comes next. Extremely happy I picked this up and gave it a go.

My first book from this author and I thoroughly enjoyed the story. The characters are well written and there is just enough intrigue to keep you engaged on each page. Callum and Joey meet too soon, but when they reconnect years later fireworks explode. Working together to solve a mystery and hopefully save lives, their love shines through. This story has a little bit of everything, paranormal aspects, espionage, and family drama. I cannot wait for the next story.

Wonderful series starter

This is my first time reading Kayla Halleur, and I definitely enjoyed this story. It was a very captivating read. Joey and Callum had a lot going on. A mixer of romance and mystery with some humor. There's dark elements as well, so please read the very detailed content warning if you have triggers. The author was very thorough, and I know a lot of people will appreciate that.

I absolutely loved this book! Callum and Joey were so perfect together, they are now in my top three favorite book couples. I was literally swooning over several interactions they had. The story was unique and very well-written, particularly for a new author. The supporting characters were interesting, and I'm glad their stories will be told in future installments of this new series. I know this is going to be one of my top reads this year, and I seriously can't recommend it enough!

This is a overall pretty fun light fantasy romance. My main issue was the tone of the characters. Joey is supposed to be 19 but his thoughts and speech were of someone much older. I think that was due to the author’s inexperience.

But I think the writing style will evolve and I'm excited to see where they go from here. Because the love story was cute and the action and tension got to be somewhat intense.

What a fantastic new author discovery for me. I loved the characters of Callum and Joey both separately and together. It was fascinating to see a relationship where one of the people had psychich abilities and how that impacted their ability to get along and deal with each other. I enjoyed the secrecy and watching characters either reveal their secrets or have them discovered. The author also knows how to write a great villain. I can't wait to read more in this series.
