Syrup Trap City (Annie Raymond Mysteries Book 6) Kindle Edition
Annie is dismissive of her current assignment. These everyday cases are routine to her these days. She takes time out to visit old acquaintances, at the ramshackle local firm that she worked for years ago. Whilst sharing gossip and coffee with Pat Thompson and Barbara Caldwell, she keeps half an eye on the surveillance she is being paid to do, but her attention focuses on potential betrayal from much nearer home. What is her boss, the enigmatic Mrs Peters, up to now?
Shadowing Mrs Peters is a far more tricky business, but while her attention is focused elsewhere, the apparently routine job takes a nasty turn. Annie has misinterpreted events badly and taken her eye off the ball. Suddenly, danger lurks round every corner and nothing is as it seems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Multi-level misdirection and double dealing
Annie Raymond PI once again steps along the mean streets of Kingston upon Hull, this time on a long-distance placement via her elusive partner, Pieternel, while their high-flying London business gets back on track. Or is that just a cover? One of many, it seems. But for whose benefit?
A high-end restaurant is being run into the ground by a scam the owner can’t detect, and Annie’s cover is that of restaurant manager to keep both the staff and the restaurant’s financial partner in the dark. While Annie chafes at the lack of transparency on all sides, she finds she has a bent for her undercover work. Is it time for a change of profession? Someone with a similar thought ends up dead.
Yet again Penny Grubb proves herself to be a skilled novelist, spinning a multi-layered story across a wide cast of fully-functioning people – more a believable slice of life than fiction. The minutiae of the restaurant business is laid bare in absorbing detail, from the price of saffron to the handling of staff and the welcoming of valued customers, each deftly highlighted to make the reader weigh whether local colour, red herring, or vital clue. This is an enthralling book where the tension rises by degrees until a terse exchange spills over into heart-thumping realisation. Get comfy and shut off the phone. One’s wits need to be honed to keep up. Highly recommended.
